Woods just posted -7 and in the lead right now. Plenty of golf to be played but damn good to see Woods post low numbers again!!

Well the first round is underway and Tiger is the clubhouse leader at -7 right now. Hard to follow considering he teed off before 8am and radio coverage comes on at 11am and the Golf Channel begins their coverage at 3pm. Anyway, I followed the PGA Shot Tracker, which is pretty neat. You can also listen to XM's coverage for free online:

Very nice round by Tiger, currently in a 3 shot lead in the clubhouse. Lots of players left of course, some haven't even started (Kim, Mickelson), but it looks like Tiger will be playing for the win this tournament. Should be a good one, lots of the best players in the world on the starting list.

Sucks that I'm at work and can't watch a single shot except of the stuff they post at PGATour.com

Is there a link where I can watch it live thru the internet? 'Cause ESPN is going to show it but until 11 pm and with this "Swine flu" subject in here I have nothing to do in all day!

Thanks for the shot tracker link, that is very cool. Now I am not going to get anything done here at work the next two days.

This is getting interesting. Phil is at -5 in second place and is still on the 14th hole. I guess he eagled the par 5 7th.

They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that.

Without (to my knowledge) a major (naming) sponsor, does anyone know how this event is financed? Is the PGA Tour handling it while they try to get a replacement for Wachovia?
Does anybody know? It's odd for a regular tour event to be named after the course it's played on.

Wells Fargo holds the naming rights after buying out Wachovia last year. Northern Trust received a huge amount of negative press for throwing the parties and festivities that come with being the title sponsor of the PGA Tour event at Riviera in February, just after they received a federal bailout, so Wells Fargo/Wachovia are hoping to keep a low profile.

I just want a Tiger and Phil Saturday and Sunday. Is that too much to ask for? LOL. Maybe they can kiss and makeup too.

It's nice to see a traditional course played by the elite players. There are only a few left that don't look tricked up in an attempt to thwart the modern player/modern equipment.

I think the lack of rough has a little more to with the drought-like weather they've had for several months than anything.

But I agree, it is nice to see.

I'd rather see a Tiger/Kim showdown.

Zach Johnson is up to the challenge with -8 thru 15 today. 66% driving accuracy and 80% GIR.

Phil only -1 today, Villegas -5 thru 16, Karlsson -5 thru 17.

This could be a good 'un.

    • I tried hybrids way back when TaylorMade introduced the copper orange Firesole Rescue, the clubhead having been made of titanium which was still relatively new even in drivers back then. I couldn't hit it well at all, and while the success of hybrids suggests that the modern ones must be quite good,  I'm perfectly happy with the 5, 7, and 9-woods.  Early ones of mine were Top Flite Intimidator 400s made by Spalding... and also made of titanium, now that I think of it.  I still have them in my basement. I do bag a driving iron, but it's a one-trick-pony that never sees fairway use.
    • The last time I played Maxfli balls, Dunlop was still making them. How long ago was that? Mostly, though, I used to play Top Flites (original 336 dimple model) when Spalding was still making them. Now I play the Pro V1x. Last time that I ordered some, Titleist was still making them. Let's see how long that lasts.
    • Once, on a course in Middleton, Massachusetts that I used to love but has since closed down,  I hit the wrong half of a huge, UK style double green.  Then I made the hundred foot putt.  Tough to  forget that one.
    • No. But if I can still play next year, I'll almost certainly be even worse. That's the reality of not being young.🙁
    • I use GPS;  it may not be as accurate, but neither am I.
