Hi all, I recently purchased a Vokey 60 deg 4 deg bounce wedge for the famed flopodpolis shot. This is the most frustrating club I've ever tried to use. Is there a secret to consistent yardage with this thing or is it just continued practice practice practice. At this point I've taken it out of my bag in favor of my 56 which works consistently. any help would be appreciated.

I found that its repetition. I hit about 4 different shots with my 60 and it took me a while to dial each one in.

Maybe some golfers can get a consistent full swing distance from a 60 degree wedge, but for me the best advice I've ever gotten for a 60 is to never use it for a hard, full shot where exact distance is the goal -- especially if there is any wind (and there usually is.) Yeah, I might blast it to get over a tree or a short side bunker, but the distance I get is pretty variable. So, I use a 60 a lot, but only for swings where I control the distance with a less than full-tilt swing, which is much easier. A normal sand wedge is my club of choice for a full shot, or I can back off a little and control it much better than going full tilt with my 60. Note: this does not mean I might not be swinging fully at a shot with the 60 -- I hit some flops pretty hard. I just do not push it to its limits of distance.

I'm sure others use their 60 for full shots, but this little tip sure has helped me.

I use my 60* for anything inside 90. I can hit it full about 90 yards and love it for green side chipping. The trick with a club like this is to not try and scoop the ball, but instead make a nice controlled swing and let the club and bounce do the work. Practice doesn't hurt either.

I have made some big strides with my 60* at the range hitting full shots about 85 yards. On the course, I still have a big tendency to cut under the ball and hitting it about 50.

Its all about trust that a traditional strike on the ball will work, something about the large amount of loft in the club screams "skull" to me when any kind of pressure is on and I inevitably keep my weight on my right foot and scoop at it.

I really think having a full 60* shot in my bag will pay off in terms of being aggressive inside the "scoring" range.

I guess my recommendation is to work it out on the range to strike the ball aggressively with a downward blow on the ball, then take it on the course and force yourself to try the shot, score be damned for a few rounds. That's my plan anyway

I had this same problem with my first 60*. Lots of time I'd come up short. It's great for flop shots, but approach shots were always hits and misses. I've switched to the X-Forged now with more bounce (10*) and have not looked back since. Unless it's out of the sand, it's my go to club for anything 75 yards in.

Just a standard full swing, I hit it 80, 90 if i crank it. But I use it mostly for flops, and chips.

I have no problems hitting my 60 consistantly, but my wedges are my best clubs.

I wish I had some advice, I do not carry a 60, as I could never find the consistent distances I get with my 52 and 56. I have also found that course setup on course I play aren't as difficult as what a tour course would be setup. I just don't seem to need that high flop, so I don't carry one.

I would say that there is usually very few times when you should need to us a 60* wedge for full swings. Best for out of the bunker and around tight lies around greens. its a great club to have for those tough shots that u need good stopping power and soft ball bounces.

I have no issues with my lob wedges. I hit it 85 yards (my 60) One thing with this club is you have to hit down or it will not perform. Other than that no real tips.

I agree with the approach of not taking a full swing with it. I consider myself to be a very solid wedge player and the first club I will take a full swing with is a PW and that isn't often. I struggled for a while with it, but now I am starting to understand its use and for me its 60 yards or less. 61-95 is the 56 and over 95 is a de-lofted 54 (plays like a 52).

I would much rather hit 3/4 or half wedges from 125 yards or less. A full PW for me is about 135.

Despite looking easy to hit, the lob wedge can do more harm than good for many players. The lob wedge is best used like others have already mentioned. Short shots around the greens, tall grass and bunkers. It's a specialty club. Making full swings with any lofted wedge will lead to inconsistent results. I have used 62 and 64 degree wedges in the past, and you simply can't make full swings with them and expect to be accurate. More importantly, distance control will be the real factor. With a wedge you want to know it's going to go the same distance every time. Keep your swings to half or 3/4 at the most. Learn how far it goes with both swings and don't try to get too much out of it. If you need more distance, drop to the SW.

Are the distances shorter because the club digs in more? Is the reason you hit your SW better because it has more bounce? Are you hitting it from tight or thick lies?

I full LW shot can't be a "hard swing" like you would think...mine is no more than 3/4. As stated above, just make a nice controlled swing with your hands leading the club through impact and it should be consistent. I have a Cleveland 60* with 4* bounce and I hit it pretty consistent. But I can't swing hard at it...that will shoot it high more than anything and come up short.

I don't know if I hit them with a full swing. But I don't have any thoughts of taking a half swing when I am sitting in the fairway from 67 yards. I just grab my 64 and take a good swing. It is more compact but I am still trying to hit it hard. For me this is much easier to control than if I hit my 60 (58) from the same distance. But I am not trying to kill it. I just take a good swing and I know I can hit it just past a spin it back.

Do you use your LW from 85-90 yards?? Is that 3/4? I am curious about that. What do you hit from 105?? I couldn't imagine that a PW would the club with normal conditions. That seems like a good SW for you.

At 105, I am hitting a smooth 52*. I know that question wasn't directed at me...but just for comparison.

    • speed blades don't have a 3iron that I know of. My 4 is already 20* . I love it as it is super straight. I went to golf Galaxy to try some hybrids and 2 iron my numbers and spin were bouncing all over the place. wasn't hitting good that day. I did hit the 4 ping 430 hybrid 215yds a  couple of times but never got consistency anywhere. It was all me mis hitting that day.The GAPR is something to think about and would like to try one sometime. in the meantime I had a 16* Adams Gold pro hybrid I was using. I took it out, choked up on it to hit it like an iron and hit it 185 into the wind and 230 with wind at my back. I am gonna ride with this awhile and see what I got. Looks promising from 1st outing.
    • My home course is Stoneleigh GC in Round Hill VA.  The course would get murdered, from the back tees its only about 6800 yards, and there's really not room to stretch it out. There would effectively be no par-5s, and several of the par-4s would be reachable.  For contrast, local qualifying in my area is often held at Woodmont CC in Maryland, which played to over 7300 yards this year.  It took 134 (-8) to qualify for the US Open.
    • If you like Taylormade, they have produced GAPR clubs for several years now. They are not-quite-hybrids... but close. They come in Lo, Mid and Hi varieties which vary in how much they look like an iron. The Lo is almost a chunky iron. The Hi looks very hybrid-esque. The Mid is somewhere in between.  Since they've made them for a while now and come out with new variations on them every year, you can probably get a slightly used one at a pretty good deal. They change the color and tweak them here and there, but they aren't that much different. If money is no object go get fitted for one that gets you your 200 yards consistently.  If the GAPR doesn't work for you Taylormade UDI and DHY might be more your cup of tea. These are slightly more iron-y than the GAPR's.  Incidentally Ping also makes a similar product theirs is called a crossover.  Basically, all the big brands have something like this. Just search out Utility Irons and you should get plenty of options.

    • Nope. Miami Shores GC in Troy, Oh wouldn't be considered for a qualifier. Even from the tips, it's only a 68.6/116.  Great course for average hackers like me, but not a venue for bigger competitions.
