for me it is probably harder to shoot under par because i can hit the greens on par 3s so i might be able to fluke a hole in one haha.
but i can not fluke a whole round of golf.
But i suppose as i get better my answer would change.

They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that.

shooting a under par round?

If I keep playing my local par 60 course, I'll make a 1 eventually, probably within the next 30 rounds. I may never shoot a 59 unless I give it a serious, serious effort.

How many 15 handicappers have a hole in 1? How many 15 handicappers have a round under par? 1 perfect shot versus 70ish perfectish shots. No contest.

I'm sure that there are fewer holes in one than rounds under par. So, for a very good golfer (like scratch or better), a hole in one would probably be harder. For someone who doesn't have the capability (skill) to shoot under par for a round, then obviously the hole in one would be easier since you can just get really lucky once. It varies with skill level, but I think overall there are more rounds under par than holes in one.

In 35 years of serious to semi-serious golf, I've had 2 aces, but never shot under par. Hitting a hole in one only takes one lucky swing... ti doesn't even have to be a good swing. Shooting under par requires a full round of good swings.

The closest I've gotten is one over par, and that was 20 years ago, during the same period when I made the 2 aces. So I' think that breaking par is the hardest to do.

Good question.

Strictly from a 'golf as a whole' perspective I would say shooting under par. There are tons of people who have hit a hole-in-one. Isn't the stat like less than 5% of all golfers can break 80 (there is some sort of stat like that out there, I may have mis-remembered the figures). There was a lady a few months ago that got a hole-in-one during her first round ever. Even the sun shines on a dog's butt every once in a while.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

i would tend to think an ace is easier. im with the one fluke shot is easier than an entire fluke game. Now if your tiger woods im sure a hole in one is much harder than an under par round at the local course

I am going to have to say that an ace will be eaiser. Like said already a fluke ace will be easier to get then a whole round under par.

Perfect example.

A friend of mine gets "forced" to fill in at his company's outing He couldn't even spell golf prior to that day. He borrows his Uncles 20 year old dusty set and off he goes.

He's hitting 3 wood every shot.

168 yards par 3 dribbles a grounder into the hole.

Hole prize $10,000.

In order to collect, he had to sign a waiver stating he wasn't a professional.

I voted round under par.

In 35 years of serious to semi-serious golf, I've had 2 aces, but never shot under par. Hitting a hole in one only takes one

Very well put here. Sums my thoughts up.

I'm convinced hole in ones are pretty much luck. My dad has been playing at around a 5 handicap or as good as a 2 handicap for about 40 years and he has never had a hole in one. He's shot one round under par, though. But with that said...your just one LUCKY swing away. I know 30 handicappers who have had a hole in one. One of my friends has played about 35-40 rounds in his life, and he has TWO HOLE IN ONES.

round under par

I've seen 4 of the worst golfers ever get aces.. One of em has 3 and no way he's under a 30 handicap

How about shooting under par with a hole in one… How ‘bout that?

well ive never had a ace,i have had 2 rounds under par so im gonna say ace is harder

Right there with ya Wedge. I've never had an ace. I've been close to it at least 5 times (within 2 feet), but never got one. I shot a 35 on a par 36 front nine at my course the other day. I think its a lot easier to shoot under par then get a hole in one. This is a great thread by the way. It all really depends on the handicap of a player. Under 10 usually picks the round of golf under par, above that just hopes to get lucky with the hole in one. For me, I hover around par golf all the time. All I need to do is get some just one birdie, and keep my par golf going, and I'm under par. I went out and shot a 38 today. My handicap went down dramatically with these scores- 35, 36, 38, 39, 38, 38, 39, 37. I LOVE GOLF

I think for the general public, shooting a round under par is more difficult. I was with a guy during his first time playing golf ever (at a free course that was a pitch and putt, it was a glorified park with astroturf tees) and he hit a hole in one on a 60 yard hole, with a 8 iron off of a rubber tee that was two inches tall.

We used to play a 8some while carrying two cases of beer with us (worst two tee shots were beer bitches and had to carry the beer to the next hole) needless to say, 8 drunken college kids went slightly beserk when this first time golfer hit a hole in one.

For the general public, a hole in one is far more likely. I saw a 210 yard hole in one by a guy who could not break 110. He hit a driver, pulled way left up on the side of a hill, it hit a rock or tree, came bounding down the hill, rolled across the green and into the hole from a direction 90 degrees to the side of the original shot direction.

    • So, it appears to me that everyone is bringing out some version of the zero-torque, or square to square, or torque balanced, putter.  What ever name you want to give it seems like everyone has one of these types of things in their line up now.  It reminds me of about 10 years ago, when everyone had to have a counter-balanced putter in their line-up.  Callaway Media | Videos, Podcasts, & Episodes | Golf Content The Official source for Callaway golf clubs, golf balls and gear.
