Putting.

Tee to green is fine, touch shots (chips/pitches) is just a matter of playing more often, but I lose a lot of strokes between 5 and 15 feet.

When I don't drive the ball well, I can't even break 90. Fortunately, this only happens every once in a while when I get too much tension in my arms.

My short game is pretty bad. I'm close to or on the green when I'm playing well, but my scrambling is only around 20%.

Driving.

I am not consistent driving the ball. When I drive the ball well I usually can score well, while my iron play is not stellar, I can really make up any short comes with my short game.

Weakest part of my game is no doubtly my ball striking. My iron play hasn't ever been a strong part, but compared to the rest of my game it's been pretty bad. I'm solid off the tee, pretty average with my hybrid...but my iron play needs to get better to get to the next level. This is why I purchased a driving range membership so this summer I can hit a minimum of 100 balls a day. If I improve my iron play I will get to my goal of being a 5 handicap at the end of summer.

My short game is as good as anyone I know, better than a few scratch players. It's really what saves me on the course is my ability to get the ball up and down.

Its changed for me as my handicap comes down. Driving and long clubs used to be my big weak spot, and putting was pretty good. Now my driving game is getting much better (hitting 50% of fairways and sometimes better), and my up and downs are getting better. So now, I feel putting is my weakest area. I only putt about 32 times a round, but its because I don't hit many greens. So I have lots of UD chances where I two putt from inside 10 feet. Gotta improve on that!

My driver, last year every driver was pin point straight, and damn near dead center.

This year I cant find my groove, except when Im at the range. If I could figure out whats going on with my driver I'd drop 5-6 shots a round which would effectivly put me at par (i usually only play 9) The other thing is my fear of over shooting the green on shots 10-20yds out with a wedge. I see the target I see what I need to do and how its going to look (if i hit it correctly) but then Ill chunk my 60* or whiff it 10' infront of me. So I started using my 52*...

Awareness. I get up to the ball and while I'm swinging I start to think about where the ball is going to go, not about my swing.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

For me, my biggest problem is negative thinking/lack of confidence while over the ball. Especially on partial wedge shots. I let negative thinking creep into my head three times today, each time I thought about backing off but decided to hit the ball anyway and horrible shots resulted. My putting is also starting to hold me back (I missed two birdie putts today that were inside 10ft ) I'm getting way too caught up with the line on my 35+ footers and not lagging it close enough to the hole. Sad part is a month ago putting was the strongest part of my game. Time to hit the practice green/par 3 course for me.

Putting.

If I could one putt more often and 3 putt less often I would be incredibly satisfied with my game.

How is your handicap above an 8?? 3 putts? Really big scores? If you hit 9 greens, 3 times get up and down, and on the other 6 holes?

I'd like to think 11.8 isn't that far off from an 8 handicap. One of my other derived goals is to have an single-digit handicap... A couple factors keep that from happening:
  • 2-3 3-putts per round (sometimes on greens hit, sometimes when trying to get up and down, bringing double-bogeys)
  • At least one "nightmare" hole where nothing goes right
  • Playing a home course with an uncharacteristically low course and slope rating (70.1/125) for it's "true" difficulty; shooting an 83 (which I do often), for example, is an 11.6 differential. So, I've gotta get some 70s scores back in the computer to break into single digits.

I think my putting is holding me back. Next is iron play. I hit the ball long and relatively straight (according to my peers) and my touch is great from 100 yards in, but I can't seem to drain that putt. In order to go from an 8 handicap to a 3 or 4, I need to improve there. Right now I'm just not making any birdies. The ones I do make are only on par 5's.

Driving, when Im driving ok I score 85-90 when its off 95-105. Ive never played a round with 14 "7's with the driver. (on a 1-10 scale)

My "1" will go 10 feet on a top. My "10" is 340 down the middle or anywhere playable.

A "7" to me is 240 yds. in the fairway or rough, as long as its playable.

My last round the driver played like a "4" and I shot 95.

From 150 in I think I am the equal to a 5HI player.
From the bunker I am equal to a 20 HI player.

Sounds silly but If I were to tee off par 4 and 5's with a 8i every time, I would break 90 every round. %100 8i and I will go 170-190(i deloft)

i will avg a 2 putt on any green ive played.

as one previous poster stated long par 3's are my demon, but i dont own a hybrid.

Putting, Putting, Putting, and consistency.

My last round I hit 4 out of fairways in the front nine, but had 2-4 puts and 3-3 puts. The other problem was only 3 GIR. If I hit a good drive, my second shot goes all tweaky, but sometimes I hit a mediocre drive and a great second shot.

    • @boogielicious and I are definitely in for the Stay & Play and will need the extra night's stay on Friday. I don't know what the plans are for our group on Friday but even if we don't make it for dinner with the rest of the Friday arrivals, I'll be more than happy to meet up somewhere for a beer or something.
    • Taking your dispersion and distance in consideration I analyzed the 4 posible ways to play the hole, or at least the ones that were listed here. I took the brown grass on the left as fescue were you need to punch out sideways to the fairway and rigth of the car path to be fescue too.  Driver "going for the green"  You have to aim more rigth, to the bunker in order to center your shotzone in between the fescue.  Wood of 240 over the bunkers I already like this one more for you. More room to land between the fescue. Balls in the fescue 11% down from 30% with driver. Improve of score from 4.55 to 4.40. 4 iron 210 yards besides the bunkers.    Also a wide area and your shot zone is better than previous ones. This makes almost the fescue dissapear. You really need to hit a bad one (sometimes shit happens). Because of that and only having 120 yards in this is the best choice so far. Down to 4.32 from 4.40. Finally the 6 Iron 180 yards to avoid all trouble.    Wide area an narrow dispersion for almost been in the fairway all the time. Similar than the previous one but 25 yards farther for the hole to avoid been in the bunkers. Average remains the same, 4.33 to 4.32.  Conclusion is easy. Either your 4iron or 6 iron of the tee are equaly good for you. Glad that you made par!
    • Wish I could have spent 5 minutes in the middle of the morning round to hit some balls at the range. Just did much more of right side through with keeping the shoulders feeling level (not dipping), and I was flushing them. Lol. Maybe too much focus on hands stuff while playing.
    • Last year I made an excel that can easily measure with my own SG data the average score for each club of the tee. Even the difference in score if you aim more left or right with the same club. I like it because it can be tweaked to account for different kind of rough, trees, hazards, greens etc.     As an example, On Par 5's that you have fescue on both sides were you can count them as a water hazard (penalty or punch out sideways), unless 3 wood or hybrid lands in a wider area between the fescue you should always hit driver. With a shorter club you are going to hit a couple less balls in the fescue than driver but you are not going to offset the fact that 100% of the shots are going to be played 30 or more yards longer. Here is a 560 par 5. Driver distance 280 yards total, 3 wood 250, hybrid 220. Distance between fescue is 30 yards (pretty tight). Dispersion for Driver is 62 yards. 56 for 3 wood and 49 for hybrid. Aiming of course at the middle of the fairway (20 yards wide) with driver you are going to hit 34% of balls on the fescue (17% left/17% right). 48% to the fairway and the rest to the rough.  The average score is going to be around 5.14. Looking at the result with 3 wood and hybrid you are going to hit less balls in the fescue but because of having longer 2nd shots you are going to score slightly worst. 5.17 and 5.25 respectively.    Things changes when the fescue is taller and you are probably going to loose the ball so changing the penalty of hitting there playing a 3 wood or hybrid gives a better score in the hole.  Off course 30 yards between penalty hazards is way to small. You normally have 60 or more, in that cases the score is going to be more close to 5 and been the Driver the weapon of choice.  The point is to see that no matter how tight the hole is, depending on the hole sometimes Driver is the play and sometimes 6 irons is the play. Is easy to see that on easy holes, but holes like this:  you need to crunch the numbers to find the best strategy.
