Original title: All Three Celebs Break 90 at Bethpage. Changed to avoid the title spoiler.

http://golf.about.com/b/2009/06/13/r...-challenge.htm
And not only did Roethlisberger break 100, contrary to Tiger's warning, he bested Romo's score from 2008, shooting an 81 at Bethpage Black. In fact, all three celebs not only broke 100, but broke 90: Jordan shot 86 and Timberlake 88.

Ha, Romo is outplayed yet again by Big Ben.

And wow: all three breaking 90. Geibelhausen shot 101.

Could this be a sign that the U.S. Open Winner is going to shoot something like 4 or 5 under par? Or even lower? I know the grounds crew will firm up the greens and make the pin positions brutal, but with all three celebs doing fairly well (Timberlake barely broke 100 last year at Torrey Pines and he's a 6 handicap), it could be quite the harbinger!

Did the 3 handicap like completely choke? He was a 3 and jordan and ben were close to that, and they beat him by a good margin. I just don't see how a guy shoots 101 with a 3 handicap unless it's the worst day of his life. I've played under large ammounts of pressure on brutal courses and it hasn't affected me that much.

oh man, i just read the article and it said that the guy from last year passed away from lung cancer... :(

How is Jordan a 3 handicap? There's no way I believe that, sorry. Maybe with quite a few mulligans. I've seen Jordan's game the few times I've seen him on T.V. He's no where near a 3 handicap.

Yeah, I think Jordan's real handicap is closer to 10, but he still wiped the floor with the supposed 3.5 guy.

I'm sure you've played on a U.S. open quality course.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

Did they play from the same tees that will be played during the U.S. Open?

Yeah, that's part of the premise.

Did the 3 handicap like completely choke?

Did you read the article before commenting? They said he was unnerved by all the people and cameras.

I'm sure you've played on a U.S. open quality course.

Ha ha. No kidding...

Would the greens that those guys played on be as fast as they will be at the U.S. Open?

<.< The whole point of this was to see how amateurs would do on a pro course under pro conditions.

Yeah that I could see. I'm not saying Jordan sucks by any means by a 3 handicap is quite a stretch from what I've seen in Celebrity stuff on T.V.

I played Carnoustie a couple of days after The Open Championship in 2007. I'm a 23 handicap and shot a 106. We played from the back tees, just to say we did. It kicked my butt! Mostly because I wasn't used to true links golf (hadn't learned the bump-n-run yet) and those HORRIBLE 20 ft deep pot bunkers. However, I'm very proud that I par'd #18, which is better than Van de Velde did in '99. By the way, the picture on my profile is from the fairway of Carnoustie #18 with the Rolex clock on the clubhouse in the background.

But even a few days after The Open, I'm sure they'd already cut the rough, and changed the greens back to normal. Bravo to Mr. Roethlisberger for shooting an 81!

I had no idea Big Ben was that good at Golf...congrats to him....and also to the fellow who won the contest, even though he shot a 101 he had 2 blow up holes according to the article and still managed to come back strong (at least imho)...

The other three guys are used to being in the spotlight while the amateur guy isn't. That makes a BIG difference.

A buddy of mine (former NFL QB) is a 3 handicap and shot 87 from the Tips at Bethpage. He said it is absolutely brutal there, and keep in mind it was just a regular day when he played. No US Open conditions.

    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.
