Hope they enjoy their last US Open at Bethpage Black. Christ, it's only the second round and the fans (obnoxious), commentators (Awful), Golf Course (boring) is really turning into a snoozer. The worst part is the fans have watched golf channel too much and are trying to outdo the 2002 event (which was just natural), now it's a bunch of drunk geeks trying to hear themselves on TV, give me the Masters anyday over this group of clowns.

I know the trendy thing to do is complain and find others who do as well, but I do agree with alot of what your saying........I tend to think the weather is a huge factor in alot of these feeling though...

I'm amazed at the accuracy these guys have with long irons. I know the greens are soft and holding but the 200+ shots that are landing next to the pin is truly amazing.

The fans hollering stuff out like it's the Jerry Springer show or something does get old

I agree, what was once a White collar sport has become by all measures a trailer park trash sport now imho...

They didn't have such high quality audio pick up back in 2002.

Sad but true. It does allow you, the viewer, to understand a bit better the conditions the players are functioning under. Long story short this is the US Open (second only to "the Open") and whomever wins it will be remembered long after the raucous NYC fans have slept off their good time.

The weather is a factor. But I was looking forward to this Major, being Father's Day and all. Maybe it turns out good, I'm hoping so, and will be the first one on this post to say I was wrong.

Now...I bet no golf tournament has had as many "Iroc Z 28's" in the parking lot! This is turning out to be a skidmark on the underpants of majors.

A few points...

1. This is the US Open...it simply cannot be boring...this is the pinnacle...that said, i am a complete junkie...the only thing i consider "boring" is the all women big break shows...and even those have value wiht a couple of hotties

2. Being from the pacific northwest, it is nice to see tour players hitting hybrids into long par 4s....no driver-8 iron to 480 yard holes...6 inches of "roll" off the tee ball is something we live with 3/4 of the year up here.

3. My gut says Sean O'Hair to win... 6 under 274

How uptight can you guys be? Seriously?

I love the atmosphere it makes it fun, special.

I mean, the players seem to love it, why can't you?

Weaver high fiving his caddy was an awesome moment.

Yea, the course is way too easy because of the weather and the early 1st round group got screwed.

The crowd is the only thing making this tournament enjoyable at this point.

I don't find it boring at all. Although the obnoxious comments like "I'm going home Tiger" is dumb but regardless not the worst major and not boring at all.

As far as majors go, yeah, certainly not the best I've seen. The leaderboard isn't the greatest with guys like Weir, Glover, and Barnes near the lead (or in the lead)...but there are some good stories like Phil playing well, the amateurs, and Duval.

Overall, it's OK. It gets a little confusing with all the rain because it's hard to follow how many holes everyone has played...

I don't know. It's not that course is too easy but it's yielded so many birdie's due to the soft conditions...not frustrating to watch, but I find it a little more exciting and exueberrating when guys are struggling to stay around E. Now, it seems like so many are under par and everyone is sinking everything!

Whatever. Lets hope for some drama the next two days.

get over it guys, the players are very obviously enjoying the crowds. remember it all comes down to the fact that this is a game, that is played on weekends, where people go to enjoy themselves...no matter where its held.

I can just imagine being at a tourney with some of you haha.

"ssshhh! phil's using his towel, have some respect!"

the distaste for the crowds should be saved for the FBR here in AZ where they truly are disrespectful.

With all due respect...it seems like the players are paying homage to the drunkards to keep them off their case. It doesn't seem like great golf, like a major should be. The FBR...that's a circus, but not a major...Seems like a great party to me, and guys happen to be playing golf...it's all Good!

I'm enjoying the heck out of watching it. Given how rainy it's been here on the Island, we're lucky to get any golf at all.

Saw the radar was showing a mass of rain coming, got up early and played 9 holes in the overcast and sometimes drizzle this morning, before they even teed off. It's funny, but when you're having fun you hardly notice a few raindrops.

Watched the Open (taking place just 20 miles down the road) from the clubhouse afterward, with my buddy. A good beer, great food, good golfing. He'd just played his first round and acquitted himself well, in general, after paying his dues at the range for a long while.

This crowd is extremely stoked because it's taking place here, on a well-known local public course. Most of the big events are in hard to access places, so this is a big thrill for the locals. I'd cut them some slack. Given the cruddy weather, they are showing up and cheering. That's enthusiasm. I doubt too many are drunks. These are $100 tickets and it's the high point in the year for golf enthusiasts around here.

Life is good.

    • Tell me you've not seen Bill play without telling me you've not seen Bill play? 😄 Just teasing @billchao. 😄
    • And like Matt said, and I have hinted at… it's ONE ROUND. Because you have to get hot. Better players than him failed to get through. And… Peaked too soon, perhaps. He could also get injured, get surpassed, lose interest or lose his game… Again, if I trusted y'all to uphold the bet, and if the bet wasn't basically a 15-year proposition… I'd bet y'all. The odds are against him, and heavily so. So… he didn't qualify, and he's playing on a sponsor's exemption. Jordan Spieth was 16 years old when he tied for 16th in a PGA Tour event… and I realize that mentioning Jordan Spieth (who has obviously had a lot of success) seems to argue against my point, but Spieth is the exception and he did better at only a year older than this fella. The odds are strongly against him.
    • He shot -5 with a bogey on the last hole. Those Monday Q events are seriously tough to get through. Lots of very very good players play in those, including normally a fair few tour players who've lost their cards, including past winners. It is a small sample size, but he also just broke one of Tiger's records (youngest ever to be ranked one in AJGA if memory serves). He's the best 15 year old in the world at the moment. He's also pretty small and skinny - if he grows and fills out a bit and gets stronger, he could be a serious force to be reckoned with. He may of course also go off the boil and struggle or his swing may not last his growth or something, so it's not like he's odds on to make it or anything like that. I think it will be interesting to see how he progresses and if (big if granted) he progresses well, then he will be quite the prospect.
    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
