A magic genie, gives you the option of cutting your handicap in half (ie 18 to a 9, 4 to a 2), but the condition is that for the next 10 years no matter how hard you practiced you could not lower your handicap (you also could not have you handicap go up).

No because you could easily cut your HC by half or more in 10 years, especially if you were a higher handicapper. Within 1 month I went from shooting 70's to 50's.

If I was a +2 and could go to a +4, I might take that deal, because always unconditionally shooting 4 under would pretty much guarantee a spot on the PGA tour.

I immediately thought "YES" because I'd be lucky given the limited practice time I have to ever get to a 5.6. But if it was just given to me it would take the fun out of it. so my answer is NO.

Sure.

I'll take a sub-3 for the next ten years. I'm 51 years old right now. Dropping those 2-3 pts otherwise is 50/50 at best for me.

The lower the hcp, the better the "deal". Mid to high hcps, not so much.

Easily? Really. Going from 70 to 50 (for 9 I assume ot else you would be on tour) is not that hard but going from 10 to 5 is huge for most people. For me, my golf goal is to get single digits and I know going from 18 to 9 is going to be tough as I have never been below a 12 even with lots of practice.

No, that would ruin the fun. I'd have to be at least a +4 before considering this deal.

That's not really how it works. A person who shoots even par at an extremely difficult course, say 10 times in a row, could reach a plus four handicap. And a plus four handicap would get you virtually no where on tour.

No, I wouldn't. So I could got o a 4, then never improve for years. I'd rather slowly, and steadily improve than an immediate cut in half.

I would take the deal, if I can be a 6 when I am 60, sure. I'll just be glad to still be playing golf when I'm 60.

Nope.. working my butt off on my game and having fun doing it. Don't always see the results I want but having fun. I plan on being less than a 5 ASAP. Or bust my butt trying :D

Yes, I have never had a better hc than I have now,but it would be a real struggle to get into single digits due to my lack of time and lack of will to practice. I only play 1-2x a week, so playing to a 5.6 would be great!

Until I'm about 65 I don't see myself taking this deal. From 65 on, well, the odds of me improving my handicap on my own are pretty slim.

No.

The genie would probably make me a nine handicap that hits every green in regulation, then three putts half the holes.

No chance. I started playing in February of this year, and I started taking lessons for about two months before ever stepping foot on a course (I shot a 160 my first round!) Since starting earlier this year, I've brought my score down to the low 80s for a good round, and low 90s for a bad round. My handicap just went down to 13. I play or practice about 30 hours a week, and I drop an average of 1-2 strokes per week now.

The truth is, if you really want to improve your handicap, you don't need a genie! You just have to put in the time and effort.

I have a full time job, and commute several hours per day, but I still manage to get out and practice, that's really the key to playing well.
