Well today on the course, my tumultuous relationship with my driver finally ended . It was something that I've seen coming for a long time now and it just seemed that all ideas and techniques had been exhausted. So after hole 3 today i bagged the dreaded 1 wood and never took it back out. Instead, I substituted with my 18* Mizuno fli-hi and hit almost every fairway for the rest of the day. I was getting about 200-230 yds out of it and I could not have been more satisfied

I know another guy that uses his adams boxer hybrid to tee off with instead of a driver. It seems to work well for him. He shot 84 last week. Not bad for not using a single driver.

Yeah, It was a long time leading up to this. The hardest part about it was getting over my ego about not being able to hit the driver.

You hit the Fli Hi 200+ yards?
That's pretty good.
I have used my 4i off the tee for ages. Only recently I have become more consistent with my 3 wood. But my iron game went south.

Do what you need to do. Play your own game. If your confidence is that low in the driver, drop it completley and put in an extra wedge or something. Become a short game wiz.

Then you might get a bitchin nickname like "Ole Resuce Rob", or someting like that.

There was a thread (that I can't find), asking who does not carry or use a driver. I was suprised at the number of people that do not use a driver even though they may carry one.

I don't use a driver even though I carry one. I could never hit a driver. Now, my only problem is what fairway wood brand to buy.

Yeah It's by far my favorite club in the bag. At different times, I could hit my driver over 300 yds but I just can't keep it out of the woods.

I used to use my 3 hybrid a lot off the tee, still will on shorter, tighter par 4's and really long par 3's. I just recently got a new 3 wood that i really like and now I use it a lot. Its funny, I just bought a new driver about the same time and I hit it pretty well at first, within the first 20 drives (as I went and played the same day it arrived from ups with no practice at the range) I hit one of my longest drives ever. But since then the relationship has gone somewhat sour and I cant seem to find the sweet spot anymore, havent had a good drive in weeks with it. So I have gotten to where I use my 3 wood off the tee almost all the time now, I can average about 210 and sometimes hit it 225-230 which is really close to the distance I would get with the driver but i keep it in play, usually in the fairway and the driver was sliced all over the place or if i tried to overcompensate id hit a big duck hook. Most of courses I play around here arent that long, par 4's are around 350 yards and 500 yard par 5's so im usually hitting 3 wood and a short iron on par 4's or 3 wood, 3 wood or 3 hybrid and a short iron for the 3rd shot on a par 5 so length really isnt that much of an issue, accuracy is more important. even on the longer par 4's, ill hit 3 wood and maybe my 5 hybrid, which ive stated on another thread is my favorite club, id say my 3 wood is a close second and pitching wedge right behind it. Even if someone can bomb it, you still have to hit the ball on the green and putt to score well, ive played with people who could outdrive me by quite a bit and our second shots will end up about the same distance from the hole because they messed up an easy pitch shot and I hit a decent short or mid iron from much farther out. I realize its a tough pill to swallow not using a driver, but if it helps you get better scores then its better for you. Isnt the score the most important thing anyway?

Exactly! Now it just seems like I have a new found confidence in my game and it feels so good not to always be in the trees.

Rules of Golf only states you can use up to 14 clubs, total. I don't believe it states in there anything about "having" to have a #1 wood or "Driver" or whatever you want to call it.
Scorecard doesn't have a requirement also to have to use a "Driver".

Yes, that is exactly why I probably won't be bagging one anytime soon. However I just got a Cleveland Hibore XL from a friend that I will be practicing with ( I can't stand my tour burner) but most likely not using for a while.

I am just now getting back into golf after a 9 year lay off and I haven't actually played a round since starting back. I'm still relearning at the driving range. However, when I played before, my driver only came out of the bag on par 5's and very long par 4's and I usually regretted using it even then. I usually teed off with my 3 Wood.

    • Just because it's a small league at a county course doesn't mean their couldn't be a small group of people who take on the role/responsibility of ensuring the rules are properly enforced and being the rules committee for your league   That's the whole point of GUR. It's a temporary thing. Also like I mentioned before, since you're playing on the same course it's highly likely this isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened to a bunker on this course.   There's nothing that needs changed though. There is the rule for how the situation is supposed to be handled as well as an alternative for how it could have been handled differently via a committee. Just because your league chooses not to have a committee doesn't mean the rules of golf need changed for everyone.   Absurd logic. You and your opponent can't just agree on rules and make things up as you go. If it's just a 1v1 match for fun, sure do whatever you want. In an actual league with other competitors, no shot. Everyone needs to play by the same rules. How would you feel if someone else in the league took a casual drop on a different hole and their playing partner agreed with it but you didn't agree with it and you found out about it later?
    • I suggest you actually read some of the Rules, either online or on the USGA (or R&A) phone app.  Here's the Definition of Committee: You have a small league, whoever is in charge of that league is the Committee.  This would be the same person (group) who might decide that you should play Lift Clean and Place (Modal Local Rule E-3), to institute the "leaf rule", (MLR F-14), or that you should move a ball out of aerification holes (MLR E-4).
    • Website. And yeah I was asking about the specifics within those sections under the performance tab. I guess the strokes gained by distance like you noted is probably a good place to start. This would indicate that my wedges need practice, which I figured as much so I'm not surprised by that   Some of the other ones specifically around the short game I struggle to make sense of what it actually means. Like I know this chart is measuring the percentage of the time that I get the ball within certain proximity ranges but I don't know from a quick glance at this where I need to improve.   But then again I guess these two would seem to indicate that it's chipping inside 25yds from the rough that has the most room for improvement? Does it seem like I'm interpreting that right?
    • What is this committee I keep hearing about? We’re a small league playing at a county course. And these are temporary issues that may be gone in a day or two. In any case, I wish more people agreed with me. It seems that trying to convince golfers to modernize rules is like trying to change the Bible. The safeguard is that you have to check with your  opponent to make sure he agrees with the drop, why should you need a committee for that?
