What is the longest drive you have ever witnessed (Hit the fairway) during a round of golf?

I played with Greg Griffin, who competed in some long drive competitions. Hitting one in the grid 383 in the event.

When we played he drove the first hole at my home course, a par 4 of 396 yards (downhill). He made me feel like a short knock even though I hit mine 315 down the hill.

The longest drive I never witnessed was one I hit yesterday. It was good poke for me (I hit it about 250-260 when hiiting it well. But it hugged the left edge of the fairway, over a tree and we lost it. It should been easy to find but I never found it, until the group infront me waved me up, it was 30 yards off the green. It landed on the cart path and bounced about 10 times they told me. first time and amybe the last time i hit 4 bills

Dang I can't wait to hit the 400 mark. My longest so far has been 360. :(

It was only like 10 yards downhill, but with hard fairways, and about 15 mph wind at my back. I hit one of those drives that starts out high and stays in the air forever, with a lot of roll. Man did I love to see that thing land at 300, and then continue rolling.

longest drive i witnessed was my own on 18 at carnoustie when I was 15; this was about a month after the van de velde incident. very firm fairways with a slight helping right to left wind. hit a power fade 363 yds wound up in the center of fairway. less than 100 yds left, wound up making easy par. easy hole hehe; what the hell was van de veldes problem? haha just kidding, he was very unfortunate to have hit a slim railing and bounce backward.

My longest personal was 283, but that's more than 30 yards over my second-longest.

A buddy of mine hit a 406-yard drive (at a ~450-yard par-4) at what used to be PGA SoCal. It was our 28th hole of the day, and it took me three shots to catch up to his tee shot. Driver, half-wedge to the green.

My personal best is 300 yards, because there is a 300 yard at a local course near me, par 4, and I've driven the green several times. But a few of those times have been from the up tees, so it was more like 280ish. But, I've driven it to the green at least 1 or 2 times from the back.

It's slightly downhill, and this was last summer when we were in a drough. I got at least 70 yards of rolll. I probably carry the ball 230 with my driver at best generally.

But also once on a baked out fairway, on a par 5, 470 yards, I went driver-5 iron. I hit my 5 iron 170-175ish. But, I mean, that was last summer when the fairways were REALLY rolling.

As far as longest witnessed, was actually once on that same 470 yard par 5 with a friend. He went driver-PW. He hit his drive like 330 yards. It was nuts!

Nope. the pin placement left me with tough chip, that ended up short in the bunker. Saved par though

My phone GPS told me that my friend hit one 380, but i'm not sure if this is correct. I sometimes doubt the accuracy of the GPS at times. I also could've sworn that it landed just ahead of the group in front of us, at the front of a ridge, but when we got up there the ball was lying a bit fartherh up and to the left on the cart path. I kind of think they just got annoyed a bit and punted it a little up the cart path.

I've hit two 360 before, and yes both in the fairway. It's a rare thing for sure.

I hit a drive 386. Par 5 at Five ponds country club in p.a. The 15th hole dead straight fairway 527 yards. Cart path on right over a stream with a tree right after the stream. Hit a drive high and right, first look up and down i thought i was catching the tree, Just cleared the top and i lost it. The 13th is to the right. So we drive up and im looking for my ball 20 yards past the tree, the guys on 13 go " Hey if your looking for your ball you might wanna go up another 100, he said that thing took 5 hops down the cart path and i lost it" So i walk up Gps in hand buddy on the cart and there she is. Bout 145 yards left to the pin right side of fairway just off in the longer grass. Hit a 9 iron short right bunker, chip shot out 3 feet from pin and hit Birdie putt. I was a little upset about hitting the Bunker and really wanted the Eagle putt, but couldnt complain i was destined for a double bogey if it wasnt for the cartpath and clearing the tree.

I'm going to give you a little advice. There's a force in the universe that makes things happen. And all you have to do is get in touch with it, stop thinking, let things happen, and be the ball.

Same experience as several other posters. Longest drive I ever witnessed was my own. Drove the green on a 335-yd hole. That is not a testimony to my golf prowess, but rather to the poor level of play from the average amateur.

My regular golf partner's son-in-law bombed one leaving about 160 yards to the green on a 498 yard flat fairway par 5 with no wind.

the 1 on my high school team hit a 330 yard drive slightly uphill down the middle of a shortish par 5. i haven't really witnessed any tremendous drives.

I play with a guy who dabbles in the long drive competitions. I've seen him hit some ridiculous drives. The one that really sticks out in my mind was when he drove the green on a 380 yard par 4 that was freaking uphill. He makes me feel like an eighty year old.

Longest one I've ever seen was mine on the slightly downhill dogleg-right par 4 #6. It was 310 to the middle of the turn and I hit my drive a little farther than that, no wind or anything.

    • Day 152 1-12 More reps bowing wrists in downswing. Still pausing at the top. Making sure to get to lead side and getting the ball to go left. Slow progress is better than no progress.
    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
    • Day 23 - 2026-01-12 Finally outdoors again with 10 minutes of 7 iron work in the net. Also mirror work. Excited to get back on the range tomorrow and maybe do some film.
    • Day 10: 2026.01.12 Hit 25 balls at the range, working on rotating right hip during backswing.
