I'm currently watching the DVD's and interested in learning the swing myself.  It makes total sense to me.  Now I need to perfect it.

Don't know about the OP, but here is my transition. In the second video I had been at it for like 4 months, and for the most part have done it on my own. I still haven't worked with anyone in person, but had guys like Erik, iteach, etc comment on it. Going to get a more recent swing up soon, but the weather has been so hit or miss. Still working on my release and hips, but yea.. I'd say its better.

FWIW, this thread is the much deeper one... and is the thread for any and all golfers working on the S&T pattern: http://thesandtrap.com/forum/thread/30537/the-stack-and-tilt-pattern

Hey Cbrian....have you turned your left foot out a little to facilitate the hip slide?

Yea, going duck foot was one of the first things I did. I can't even get comfortable the old way anymore. Concentrating more on the feel of pressure in the left foot has helped a bunch... or at least I think it has. Before I had other things on my mind and I was just thinking about it too late.

And thanks Michael.

I have been suffering from the dredded sway which has been stuffing my game for too long. So in desperate attempt I went to the range today thouht i would give the Stack & Tilt a go. I Hit perfect shots for 2hrs solid......so i Went to my club for a round......Sure enough all came unstuck....loooking back at the crap round of golf.... i fell in to the trap of overdoing the forward weight then getting over active with arms on the back swing and ending up with a reverse piviot then comming back over the top on the way through. Who's had this ? And what did you focus on to fix it ?

How does someone simply go to the range and give stack and tilt "a go"? Please explain because I would really like to know if it is that simple... The way it is discussed on this forum and YouTube videos, one would think you would need lessons to fully understand this swing...

Stack and Tilt is a swing made up of many individual pieces. None of the tour players have the same swing and each exaggerate different pieces to others. e.g. Troy Matteson presets more weight forward than most at address. Start off by working on pieces which will eliminate your bad shots. For example if you're hitting fat/thin shots, try setting a bit more weight forward at address and work on flying wedge and pushing hips forward.

You can't.

You can do some things that you think are S&T like "try to keep your weight more forward" but invariably you'll overdo it, underdo it, or simply do it improperly. S&T, like any generalized golf swing pattern out there , is not something you can just "decide to do" one afternoon like, say, "I'm going to give cross-handed putting a try."

It's still a full on golf swing with hundreds of parts moving in sequences you can't possibly "do" the first time you try it, even with an instructor.

P.S. Thanks mj92. Saved me from typing that stuff out.

    • Never practiced golf when I was young and the only lesson ever taken was a driver lesson. I feel like I'm improving every year. However, the numbers don't support my feeling about improving. I usually drop to 12-13 during the summer while playing the familiar courses around home and then go on golf trips in the fall to new courses and increase to end the year between 15-17. Been a similar story for a number of years now but hey, it's the best thing there is in life so not too bothered but reaching 9.9 is the objective every year. Maybe a few lessons and practice could help me achieve it since I pretty much have no idea what I'm doing, just playing and never practice.
    • I am semi-loyal. Usually buy four dozen of one ball and only play that until out and then determine whether to continue or try another one. Since starting my semi-loyal path to success, I've been playing the below, not in order: ProV1 ProV1x ProV1x left dash AVX Bridgestone BXS Srixon Z-star XV I am not sure if it has helped anything, but it gives a bit of confidence knowing that it at least is not the ball (while using the same one) that gives different results so one thing less to mind about I guess. On the level that I am, not sure whether it makes much difference but will continue since I have to play something so might as well go with the same ball for a number of rounds. Edit: favorite is probably the BXS followed by ProV1/Srixon Z-star XV. Haven't got any numbers to back it up but just by feel.
    • Will not do it by myself, going to the pro shop I usually use after Cristmas for input and actually doing the changes, if any, but wanted to get some thoughts on whether this was worthwhile out of curiosity.
    • In terms of ball striking, not really. Ball striking being how good you are at hitting the center of the clubface with the swing path you want and the loft you want to present at impact.  In terms of getting better launch conditions for the current swing you have, it is debatable.  It depends on how you swing and what your current launch conditions are at. These are fine tuning mechanisms not significant changes. They might not even be the correct fine tuning you need. I would go spend the $100 to $150 dollars in getting a club fitting over potentially wasting money on changes that ChatGPT gave you.  New grips are important. Yes, it can affect swing weight, but it is personal preference. Swing weight is just one component.  Overall weight effects the feel. The type of golf shaft effects the feel of the club in the swing. Swing weight effects the feel. You can add so much extra weight to get the swing weight correct and it will feel completely different because the total weight went up. Imagine swinging a 5lb stick versus a 15lb stick. They could be balanced the same (swing weight), but one will take substantially more effort to move.  I would almost say swing weight is an old school way of fitting clubs. Now, with launch monitors, you could just fit the golfer. You could have two golfers with the same swing speed that want completely different swing weight. It is just personal preference. You can only tell that by swinging a golf club.
    • Thanks for the comments. I fully understand that these changes won't make any big difference compared to getting a flawless swing but looking to give myself the best chance of success at where I am and hopefully lessons will improve the swing along the way. Can these changes make minor improvements to ball striking and misses then that's fine. From what I understood about changing the grips, which is to avoid them slipping in warm and humid conditions, is that it will affect the swing weight since midsize are heavier than regular and so therefore adding weight to the club head would be required to avoid a change of feel in the club compared to before?
