I'm working on losing weight. (Yes, this is a golf post.) I have decided that when I lose 50 lbs. that I will treat myself to a Scotty Squareback 1. I'm a 26 handicap and don't imagine I will be better than a 20 by the time I lose the weight. Does a player need to be a certain skill level before he can carry a Cameron putter? I know that when I see someone at the course with one, I immediately assume he knows what he's doing. Is there an unwritten rule about these things?

In my C-130 bag:

not neccasarily.. unless you have all like walmart clubs in your bag then a scotty, that would probably cause some weird looks.. but besides that, aslong as your not terrible i think its fine.

Seriously? Anyone who is going to have a crack at a high handicap about carrying a Scotty is just jealous or would have found something to have an issue over regardless. It's your money bud and if treating yourself can help you improve your health I think you should go for it.

The only assumption I make when I see a SC is that the person has more disposable income than me

No, there are no unwritten rules about gaming a Scotty when you're not a great golfer. But there are both written and unwritten rules that are far more important: Do what makes YOU happy, and don't worry about what others will think! And if anyone makes a snide comment, tell us the same thing you told us - that you rewarded yourself for your great accomplishment of losing serious weight. Good luck!

Hell no!!!!!! Dude, reward yourself! Get that Scotty!! Even if there was an some unwritten rule about it, if that's what you really want and that's what you're working towards, play what you want. Who cares what everyone else thinks? I said it in another thread, and I'll say it again now - loosely quoting Katt Williams - Let the haters hate. That's their job. That's why their called haters. You got to live your life and not give a --ck what they think about you. There will always be someone out there that will hate, no matter what. Dont let it change what you want.

If you feel pressured about being a better player because you got a Cameron, maybe it will inspire you to practice and play more to take that handicap down!

Good luck to you, I think that's awesome that you've set a great goal for yourself, and I hope it works out well for you.

First, there's no rule, written or otherwise, about who gets Scottys, other than who pays for them (or otherwise legally acquires such a club). If you're worried about being a 20 handicap with a Scotty Cameron putter, then, how about once you get the putter, you practice your putting a bit more? A 15 handicap that is a dynamite putter is certainly more "deserving" (if there is such a thing) of the Scotty than a 2 handicap that putts like a gorilla.

Now, there's an even better story: "I lost 50 pounds and took 10 shots off my golf game!"

Well said.

Game what you like and don't sweat other peoples baggage & hang-ups. That's a great goal and a great reward. You'll be proud of yourself every time you feel that red corded grip in your hand....it will inspire confidence to know that "I lost 50 lbs....heck yeah.....I did that and now I'm gonna sink this putt.....easy game".

Go for it! I got my Scotty around Christmas time last year as a sort of "gift" for myself also, and I think it actually improved my putting b/c of the mental aspect! I know it's probably not 100% true, but I get out on the course over a putt and think "dang, this is a hot peice of equipment, there's no way I'll miss this putt!"

The squareback is sweet too, I haven't been able to roll one but have seen them around, you'll be completely happy with it!

Guy I'm playing with today games one of Fastbacks....in 34" length.

When these two first popped up on Scotty's website, I thought I'd like the Squareback the most. A few months later they finally started appearing in our pro shop. I demoed both of them. I was surprised at how much I really like the Fastback, too.

Did you demo several putters, and the Cameron was the best for your natural setup and natural stroke?

Or are you planning on buying it because you just think it's cool? Either way, it's your money and your golf bag, but here's my suggestion. Reward yourself with the Scotty Cameron when you reach your weight goal. Reward the new Scotty Cameron with a regular spot in the bag after you confirm you're draining more putts with it. If it's about equal, game it. If your scoring takes an obvious step backward with the Cameron, carry two putters in the bag. One for show the other for dough.

Each and every one of my friends that I golf with have Scotties and all except one can break 100. I say go for it!

I think it's an excellent goal, but like Sean said, make sure you choose a putter that works well for you and your stroke. On top of treating yourself to the SC putter, I would also treat yourself to an SC putter fitting session. Yes, they do exist, and yes, it will match you to the perfect SC putter as we all know that they offer a lot of them.

I wouldn;t even give it a second thought. You are the one buying who cares what anyone else thinks. I have saw people with staff bags and the latest and greatest of everything available that shoot 110.. If you want a Cameron I highly suggest you get one. My scotty is the only club that hasn;t changes in my bag in the last 11 years.

No. In the interest of speeding up the game, you should wait until you're walking to the next tee box (while you're writing down the scores). Also be sure to put an asterix/footnote beside his score when he 3 putts - at the bottom put an asterix beside a pile of poo. And don't forget the stink lines.

Be sure to rave about how little your putter cost you too. Mine? $80 and golden (at least since I bought it 2 months ago_.
