Titleist drivers??

Can anyone tell me if the myth that you have to be a good player to use titleist drivers is true?? Ive recently bought nike str8 fit driver and im not liking it! it doesnt feel like i get a good solid contact off it and the noise isnt great either!! Was thinking of exchanging it back for an R9, ping G10 or a titleist driver but after what i heard am not sure if this is a wise move!! I know titleist do the 909 d1,d2 and d3 so what would people recommend??

I don't really think you have to be a great player to play one, I really like mine (905R UST V2) and I play to an 18.5. As a rule it isn't going to be as forgiving on mishits as some others so I guess you could say you have to be good to get the most from it (I don't).

I like the sound of this head and the feel of the combo with the V2 shaft. Has a more boring trajectory than my previous driver. Sits up square to a bit open and yes I miss left a lot, but I have to really mess up a swing to put one in the right rough and I like at least having a (halfway) consistent miss. I do I hit it straight at least half the time :)

I could probably find a "better" driver for me but I don't think I'd find one I'd like better so I'm sticking with this one for a while.

As you say...it's a myth. They are great drivers in a traditional shape (usually!). May not be quite as forgiving as some on the market but they're one of my favourites. Great sound as well.

See my signature for my current model but I like the 983K, 905s (and t) and 975 a lot as well. Not tried the 909s yet.

If your gonna dish out the cash for an R9 I would go ahead and look at the new PING G15's or even a PING Rapture V2(my favorite PING driver).

I have hit the newer Titleist drivers next to a G15 and Rapture V2 and for ME it went. Hit 5 different drivers that day.

1) PING Rapture V2 (Farthest and VERY forgiving)
2) PING G15 (Probably the most forgiving, close with the Rapture V2, but not near as far)
3) Callaway FT9 (Loved the feel, but the PINGS just got better overall performance.)
4) TM R9 (If your swing changes a lot this is the driver for you, LOVED the how much a person can adjust these things. Best way I can describe this driver is not best at anything but was always around 2nd at everything haha)
5) Titleist 909 D2 (Ball goes VERY far, but by far the less forgiving)


The Rapture V2 is a little older BUT this has allowed prices to drop and a person can pick one up for less than a new G15. Probably best to just go hit them all HAHA.

You also might try out the Cobras ( I hear they are VERY nice)

No, don't have to be a good player to play Titleist drivers. Like others have said they are probably less forgiving but either way you still have to swing the club. If you put a bad swing on one, you'll hit it bad no matter what you're using. I just like the way Titliest drivers feel and sound. They don't have that loud crack that most drivers have today.

The main reason why most will tell you that you have to be a good player to play them is because typically their faces are open. The average golfer fights a slice anyway so with an open clubface, it's even more pronounced.

I would have a look at the TM tour burner, I upgraded to this recently from a nike sq sumo and it feels nice and solid, pretty forgiving and more consistent than the nike. They can be had from american golf for £129 too. The ping g10/15 drivers are very solid too.

I agree with deronsizemore. I love the way my 905R feel and sound. It's not hard to hit, you get used to it, thing is that it's not forgiving as others.

Titliest drivers are usually at least a half degree open off the shelf, but besides that they are not any more or less forgiving than any other driver. You still have to make a decent swing no matter what club youre using.

titleist drivers really are more of a player's club than many others (although not all).. like a blade as compared with a cavity back, they are harder to hit well and less forgiving on off centre hits. but the flip side is that you do get more control overall when you do hit the centre.. it's a hard thing to describe.

it's like the difference between the original wilson pro-staff tennis racket that sampras used and federer currently uses (although federer's is painted to look like the latest model) compared with most other wilson rackets used on the tour... the pro staff gives you unbelievable control but you need to swing/hit well and get it in the middle to experience that control.

anyway, i have a 983k with a stiff shaft (titleist brand shaft which i don't think they make any more) which i absolutely adore and for the first time ever actually feel confident with at address. my question is, it's an old model (2004/5 i think) and i bought it second hand. do drivers wear out in time?? should i think about replacing it?

i still hit it 270 metres more or less. i love it so much that i don't use my 3 wood any more.. i just choke up on my driver and tee it lower for 230 metres.

first of all, the ping g10 is much longer than the rapture and secondly, titleist drivers tend to go a tad bit shorter than other drivers

How do you like the high launch proforce v2 compared to the normal proforce v2? Does it go much higher or farther?

Maybe you read my post wrong? I'm NOT talking about the PING Rapture, I'm talking about the newer PING Rapture "V2.

If you think the G10 is much longer than the rapture "V2" I feel sorry for you and you must truly be one of those guys that everything is backwards when it comes to the norm on golf clubs

the head pro at my golf club tested both drivers on a launch monitor and found that the ping g10 was a longer driver.
but this may have been so because of his specific swing characteristics.

I think it's a myth; their advertising states "for serious golfers". It doesn't say great golfers. I am far from a great golfer, in fact I tend to suck half the time but I use a 907D2 (10.5*, YS6 stiff, 44.5") and love it.

I have also hit the G10, Big Bertha, that SuperQuad thing, 983K, Burner, Tour Burner. I never thought that any of those clubs were materially better. I don't care about distance as much as I do about the dispersion.

I've been on the search for a driver for a long time now.

I messed around and traded my G10.....didn't like the shaft. It was cheaper to trade out than to replace shaft......anyway I've been through some of the top named drivers since....looking for the best one for me.

I hit a couple Titleist drivers recently and can say that they were impressive.

The 909DComp was the one I wound up going with. It sets up beautifully for me....half degree open. I really like this vs some of the closed stuff that is so common now.

I liked the high launch I got with this stick. I did order a different shaft and different length than what I tried. I hope this works okay. I wanted a slightly different shot shape at the terminal peak...more gradual decent with more roll out.

It seemed as forgiving as the G10 which really surprised me. High/low/left/right shots all worked out okay. I hope to hit more fairways with this stick.


The sound of the club was very pleasing. It wasn't tin can sounding or earsplitting obnoxious. Simply a solid sound.

I think back to when I was shooting my best scores....ten years ago...I was gaming a Titleist driver and 3 wood. My accuracy has never been so good as back then. I hate that I quit playing for so long and am having to relearn a few things. Maybe this stick along with my trusty Pings will bring me back to a comfort level with my game that has been lacking.

To answer your question...the DComp felt the most confidence inspiring to me however everyone's eye is different. The D2 seems to appeal to a wide range of players, too. The D3 seems to be the "players" stick of the bunch. Iaccas has a sweat review of the 909 line on the main page. I found it very insightful and useful.

Titleist makes really nice clubs and the 909 is a very good driver. They've been working on making the drivers slightly more forgiving but they're a very good option. The face is 0.5 degrees open (not a good choice if you fight a slice). On a golf magazine article from about a year ago i read that you the driver is designed from players with a handicap up to 15. The three different models give you different launch options.
i can't wait till next april when we have a titleist demo day and i'll get to finally hit it.

I've played Titleist irons and driver my entire life (Callaway 3w), and am now starting to wonder if I could have scored better through my years had I used more forgiving clubs? Is it really that much of a difference? Did I learn to play golf with tougher clubs, and if I switched to more forgiving, I might score better?
