Do you guys usually carry your bags, or use a pull cart??

Reason I ask is, I walked 9 today for the first time ever, and when I got home I was pretty pooped, and my swing suffered a bit towards the end..

Will I get used to this or is this how its gonna be??

Im in good shape, tall and strong, so I know its not that...

Thanks

Jim

I carry. I sometimes take a pull cart. Sometimes I take an electric cart.

The latter two are more likely if it's really, really hot out. You'll get used to it. Probably. It's always tough in the spring (where I live) but that's partly because you're not used to it, but it's also partly because the ground is soft and it's tougher to walk.

You'll get used to it.... just takes some time. I've actually gotten to the point where I shoot better scores when I walk and carry my clubs. I have more time to put bad shots out of my mind and tend to relax more when walking.

I also drink a lot less beer when I walk :D

i carry my tour bag. dont even notice it anymore, nut at the start id die going up 14, partly because of the bags size partly because it has a severe hill turning a 480 yard par 5 into a 530yard monster with a dog leg

I carry and yes, I too get tired shoulders. A friend of mine has let me borrow his push cart to test drive. Haven't had the chance to use it yet but I'm curious to see the difference.

Even if you think you are in decent physical condition, you are really stressing core muscles that may not get used all the time by picking up, carrying, putting down your bag, etc. Those muscles will strengthen over time, and you will be better off for it.

I personally enjoy carrying and walking, but lately twilight rounds with my girlfriend have demanded electric carts. I am thinking about getting a nice push cart so that we can walk and she can push her bag and I can carry. I always carry when I play by myself.

Right on, thanks guys, so I will get used to it huh? I just noticed my swing deteriorating after 9... I wasnt tired while out there, but I definitely knew my swing was "off"...

Hope I get used to it, well see tomorrow, gonna walk 18 tomorrow if I have the time....

I'll give it a week, and see how it goes.

I'm def getting a push cart for the summer though! It gets HOT out here.

Thanks for the input

Up until about a year ago, I always used to carry. Much preferred it. Even 36 holes. But 25 years of playing football (soccer) had not done my knees any favours and I found as I got older that my golf was suffering towards the end of the round due to them aching like mad.
So about a year ago I invested in an electric trolley, and find that my golf has now taken on a new lease of life. I no longer get tired towards the end of the round and I can honestly say that it has been the best £200.00 I have ever spent on the game.
Given the choice, I would still rather carry. But unfortunately, the choice has been taken away from me.

It's more about stamina then strength. Don't expect it to be easy if it's something you aren't use to. Brisk walks several times a week will help.

I always thought walking was part of the deal. I'm 56 and have carried my bag all my life, until this year. My hip started to bother me, so I changed to a pull cart and its a lot better.

I can get on a real rant about golf carts. It seems that most people ride these days and from most of their profiles, most could stand some exercise.

Walk and carry takes some getting used to but, as everybody here has said, you will get used to it and be better off for it.

I find that my first 4-5 holes are off because I'm not warmed up yet. My last 8 holes are off because I'm too tired. Holes 6 through 9 generally don't go well because of my lack of golfing ability.

I carry. The newer bags with dual shoulder straps do a much better job of distributing the weight evenly across your shoulders, which doesnt fatigue you as much as the older bags that just had 1 shoulder strap.
Ive considered getting a pull cart, but Im not ready for that yet. Using a pull cart just makes me feel old. Call it being full of pride, call it me not wanting to admit the fact that Im getting older; Im just not ready to do the whole pull cart thing yet.

I have a two-strap carry bag, but I find that if I actually use both straps, the bag bounces so much I worry about the clubs destroying each other. The resonance is also pretty uncomfortable so I have to either contort myself to hold it steady or walk very slowly. Are other bags better behaved?

To the OP, I always walk and carry, no cart. I only play 9 holes most of the time and have noticed that it gets easier. I don't play often, but the difference between the first time back after a couple years off and getting out ~1-2 times per month for a while was pretty significant. I now feel tired by the end, especially on the rare occasions I play 18, but not fatigued in the same way.

I walk with a push cart when the tempurature is less than 95*F. I used to carry, and would like to get back to doing that. I'm working on losing weight, which will help. I'd like to get to the point where I use the push cart in the heat, and carry my bag the rest of the time.

    • The term I hear most often is "double teeing" which means the course/club has starting times from both the #1 and #10 tee.  I have encountered this many times and we know if we are the first group off #10, we may well get to #1 and have to wait because there are groups still with tee times yet to tee of #1.  In most instances, where the course/club has a starter, he normally explains this situation.  In this case, the pro advised what you would could/would encounter making the turn to #1.  And, that is exactly what happened.  Probably would have been wise to talk to the pro after playing back 9 and ask when you could go off #1 since apparently that club does not double tee.   Regardless, the outburst towards the other group was uncalled for.  And, I don't blame the member for being upset.  As a member of a private club, you are responsible for the actions of your guest.  I have played many times as a guest in the UK and I am pretty damn sure my host was responsible for my actions while at the club.  I know at the clubs I have belonged to here in the US, that is the way it is.  As a matter of fact, the member may find himself being brought before management and facing possible suspension.  So, I don't blame him for being upset.  However, as the host, he really should have stepped up and put a stop to the OP's actions.  OP makes this statement "I now understand that standards are different on the "private course." But I'll take those lessons to the muni, too."  No, the standards are not different.  You, sir, seem to be just a bit hard headed and belligerent, even if you are college professor...which possibly explains a lot.   JMHO
    • Day 32: worked for about 10 minutes on my drill. Filmed it as well for a check in. I think it’s slightly better but still seeing some issues.
    • Day 44 (26 Dec 25)  -  played in the Friday men’s shootout with a twist - used the Toney Penna persimmons and MacGregor blades - had a blast playing these clubs.  They really help in zoning in on making solid ball contact.  Scoring was solid - had several looks at birdie and had a few par saves.  Overall a day of focused course management.
    • Day 2: 2025.12.27 Eighteen holes at Kauri Cliffs. Focusing on trying to keep flex in right leg during backswing.
    • Day 136 12-26 Had a different practice planned today but life happened. Worked on "wide to wide" and still working on remaining flowy. Starting the club head in front of the ball as a drill, is helping with the flow of the swing.
