I really like playing the longer courses. 7000+ courses force me to play smarter and not just be in attack mode all the time.

My personal favorite course in the Louisville area is just over 7100 from the tips.

I try to find golf courses that are as long as possible. I like to have different types of approach shots on every hole. I get bored of hitting driver wedge into all of the par 4s. I like having to play intelligent golf around the course but some short courses can be fun once in awhile. It's all about the design of the course and how they use the terrain. Goofy greens with impossible pin locations are tough but still fun to play once in awhile.

I tend to score better on courses that provide many different shots. It keeps me on my toes, you'd think hitting wedge into every green would be the best for scoring but I keep my mind in the game much better if I'm presented with more options.

The length of the course doesn't really seem to affect my scoring, but usually shorter courses are also rated lower and are easier in general. When deciding between back/middle tee, I aim for 6,200 - 6,600 yards. Though I'm not a "championship" golfer, I'll always play from the backs if it comes in under 6,600. I hit my driver 270 - 300, so length is rarely a problem for me.

I like to stick in the 6200-6500 range... anything more than that and I am struggling to reach long par 4's in two.

I like to play between 5800 and 6200 depending how easy/hard the course is. Not really sure how well I would score shorter or longer. Not really consistent enough to have an opinion there.

Of course I pull hook left OB about 10% of the time and slice right about 40% of the time. Length does not equate to low scoring, but it is nice to hit in from 120 rather than 180, when I can hit the fairway

None of the munis I play are much over 6900 yds, and even though I'm losing distance (every year it seems), they are still shorter than I like. One muni has a par 5 on number 9 that plays about 480-485, that the LPGA used to play as a par 4, so I play it as a par 4, usually having to hit 4-6 iron for my second. I think that's the longest 'par 4' I play. I can still reach most par 5s on these courses in two, or have a very short u/d

sometimes I'll hit a long/mid iron off the tee on the shorter par 4s so I can have a different approach shot to make things interesting.

The course that I used to play that challenged me the most (length/difficulty) was Torey Pines in the 80s, but I don't remember what the south course used to play to back then. I doubt I could play it from the tips now.

actually 2 part question...

1. doesn't matter the yardage, i'm a fairly long hitter and have played courses comfortable at lengths of over 7,000 yards.

2. i'm not so sure i'd score better, actually. i feel more comfortable with a five iron in my hand than with an 8 iron. but it's probably all mental. i'd much rather have a wide open course that's 7500 yards than a tight course with lots of turns that's 6500.

I have enjoyed playing executive courses 4500 yards is about right for stress free round playing solo. Got addicted on forward tees recently because the regular tees are being refurbished at my club.

My ideal course length is 6600 yds. I obviously don't score at the distance as well as at 6200 yds, but I enjoy the challenge a lot more. I can use every club in my bag at that distance. Up to 7000 yds is still enjoyable. Over 7000 yds and the game begins to feel like work.

Most play between those yardages from the white tees, which is where most people play from. Honestly, really long courses here would be bad as we get a lot of old(er) Snow Birds down here during the winter. Many are showing up now.

We play anything from 6200 to 6600, but I'm most comfortable at 6300.

Home course is 6500 from the mids and 6950 from the tips. I can play either and it doesn't really change my score much. My specialty is missing greens and getting up and down, so missing from 130 or missing from 160 doesn't make much difference. I guess if I had to pick a distance at sea level, it's going to be around 6000 to 6300, but that depends on other rating factors like forced carries and water, etc., too.

On a really tough and unfamiliar course I'll play a shorter tee (I'll just try and pick one that lets me play my game). I'm out there to try and have fun, and beating my head against an indestructible wall isn't much fun.
