I currently have a generic-as-hell "Alien golf" 56 degree SW from Big 5, and am looking to upgrade.

Sorry for the "basicness" of this post, but can anyone give me their opinions of their favorite brands for wedges?

Thanks for all the help.

The stuff in my bag (i.e. The clubs that I haven't tossed in the pond. Yet.):

Oh my, the "ALIEN!" Sorry, I was actually just thinking about that wedge the other day when I was considering bounces. That original Alien wedge must have had 30 degrees of bounce; the whole bottom was completely flat. I actually remember playing in High School against a golfer who use the Alien. He tried hitting it form the fairway at about 55 yards out, claiming he could swing "full blast" and get killer height while landing it softly. Well, he bladed it over the green and out of bounce. I about died laughing.

You really can't go wrong with many of today's wedges. If money is no object, I'd go Scratch Golf. Otherwise, Mizuno, Cleveland and Titleist all make great wedges. If you need a more forgiving wedge, you might consider some of the cavity back options form Ping or the Cleveland G14, which is a great wedge.

I play all Cleveland wedges. I have used Mizuno, Titleist, and Ping in the past.. all the name brand wedges are good.. and you probably cant go wrong. I would stick with one name brand to ensure you are keeping set up, bounce, look, loft etc.. consistent.. go with whatever you find on sale.. .there are some great deals on Cleveland CG 10's and 12' out there now that the CG 15s are out.

can't really go wrong with any of the brand names. Try them out at the store or a range and get what feel's best to you.

Big Bertha Steelhead Plus 3wood

ive tried quite a few, vokeys, ping tour-w, taylormade, cleveland and the best ive found is the callaway x-forged. they do chew up the balls pretty quickly but the control and feel you get from them is unmatched in my opinion. these are all top market wedges though, something a little cheaper that are pretty good are the nike SV wedges.

Make sure to seek some proper advice though on what lofts and bounce you need. The main thing though is to make sure you feel comfortable with them!!

Of all the traditional OEM brands I am partial to the Callaway. Vokey, Mizuno, and Cleveland are all solid, but the Cally just works best for me.

Why is it that whenever I go with one of the "Brand names" I feel like I've went wrong.

It depends on what you're looking for in a wedge. I've heard great things about the Adams Watson wedges, and they're pretty inexpensive. The Mizuno MP-series wedges are pretty popular. If you don't mind cast clubs, Titleist Vokey are hugely popular as well, and easy to find.

Also, consider used wedges. Some golfers play a big-name wedge for a few months and then dump it because it doesn't fit their game. If the face isn't beat up or grooves worn out, sometimes you can find good deals. Got my slightly-used Callaway X-Forged for $40.

For SW, take a look at different bounce options.

Thanks a lot for all the excellent info, guys. Actually, some of the best (very rare) shots I've had have been with that Alien golf wedge, but I still don't like the feel of it at all.

Titleist, Cleveland, Mizuno and Ping would be the ones Id consider. Scratch is nice too, but way too much $$$.

I really like these wedges: Titleist Vokey SM'd, Cleveland CG12, 14, 15, Scratch 8620, Nike VR, Callaway X-Tour, Ping Tour-W, TMade ZTP, the list goes on.

I'd have to say Titleist, Nike, Scratch, and Cleveland are my favorite wedge brands.

8620 is $100 new. And didn't you say Vokey's were overrated in another thread?

I like the feel and the grind of the Mizuno MPT wedges. I feel like I can hit any shot I need with my 56 degree wedge. Can't go wrong with Vokeys either.

    • I have a Titleist one that I use with my electric trolley. Fits perfectly on there and I don't care about the weight because I'm not carrying it or pushing it. I have room for everything I could need and when it's hot I have plenty of room for lots of water.
    • Quick question for you. If you had Tiger Woods hit all of your full shots and you just did the chipping, putting and sand shots what do you think your handicap would be?
    • So yesterday I happened to find myself in a Play-It-Again sports and they had that very Cobra Staff Bag for $150.00.  It looked to be in perfect or near-perfect condition. I immediately wondered if the guy I saw using it on Wednesday had hocked it at Play-It-Again. 😁
    • See you Saturday at Reserve Run.  I have to confess, even thought it's a long way out. I'm pretty excited about next year end of April. The tournament I play every year for the better part of 2 decades is moving to Paiute Golf Club in Las Vegas. We'll get to use The Wolf and Sun Mountain courses for our tournament and get to do the Horserace on The Snow Mountain Course. I'm already looking forward to it.
    • OH MY GOSH!!! I feel your pain!  The Wednesday League I play in has done it that way forever. (So did the Monday Night league I tried for a couple of years.) I have no idea why. Makes me crazy! Especially since they have a modified local rule which was designed for exactly that purpose! Personally, I don't do it. It hasn't happened to me very much, only once that I can think of, but when it did I demanded to be given a two stroke penalty. They wouldn't give it to me. So, I went all the way back and replayed the shot with a one stroke penalty. The guys I found on the tee box thought I was an insane person... maybe I am.  But, Man, the rules are the rules and it's not even complicated or confusing.
