Did anyone read the recent article in Golf Digest where Anna Rawson (hot) talks about how important it is to keep your head still? I recently bought a training aid called the steady-head at steadyhead.com and I think it's actually going to help me learn how to keep a steady head. Anyway, wondering if anyone else saw the article and thinks keeping a steady head will improve my golf game?

I think your golf game will surely improve if this training aid leads you to Anna Rawsonesque steady head.

A) Dear god she's sexy B) My grandfather used to hold the butt of his driver to my forehead standing in front of me while I swung to keep the importance of a steady head...(I was 9) and just about everyone I've played with has mentioned it to me C) With a steady head it allows you to figure out what else you're doing wrong, if your head's movin alot, makes it hard to tell what else you're doin wrong. You can do alot right with your lower body but if you are changin your eye level, swaying, crickin your neck, turning away, etc...it makes it tough to be consistent

I am in the process of a big swing change to S & T.. The big key is staying centered and keeping the head steady. The book uses alot of old time pictures and you can see how the big shift off the ball wasn't there with alot of great players. I have pretty much eliminated my biggest miss in 2 range sessions (a big pull hook). I haven't played yet but needless to say I am pretty excited. I am hitting it more pure than I ever have in my life and expect a huge drop in my index this spring. A thing about the swing is I haven't lost a bit of power. If anything, I have more ball speed.

I dunno about all of that head still stuff. I think its more important to focus on keeping your head and chin level rather than trying to lock it in place...

Indeed.Tiger's head moves all over the place during the downswing.Doesn't seem to affect him too much.

Yeah, we should all strive to drive the ball as accurately as Tiger Woods...

And even if you think he's good (duh, he is), simple common sense tells you the guy practices about 1000x as often as the average amateur, who would be better off keeping a fairly steady head as it will at least promote better contact.

Exactly, an amateur who plays and practices infrequently needs to adhere to certain basics which will promote consistent ball striking.

The point was.. if a guy can have head movement like that and still be probably the best golfer who ever lived, then how important a factor can a still head be?There's far more important things to work on.

But that's a lousy point. Nobody else is Tiger Woods. Do you possess Tiger's freak-of-nature skills? Does anyone else? You should have said "if ONE guy can have head movement like that..." key word being "one" guy. He may be one of the few guys capable of doing that.

And again, even Tiger's head movement is much less on drives he's hitting with control and with other shots he hits with control. And, hey, they go much straighter and nearly as far. And finally, Jack Nicklaus didn't move his head.

She is smoking hot and I have a great joke in my head.

The most important thing in golf is controlling the low point in the swing. Good players do that, bad ones don't. With a steady head it is much easier to do that.

his second sentence mentions the idea of keeping the head steady.

As for the OP, perhaps a steady head would benefit mid to high handicappers, but I don't think it's such a vital part of the swing that you have to make a 'conscious' decision to keep it steady during the swing.Poor alignment, grip, hip movement and impact are far more detrimental to the outcome IMHO.

From Hank Haney in Dec. 2008 golf Digest: "One of the most important lessons a junior player can learn is that a correct, repeating swing happens around a fixed axis. That can be a tough one to absorb—especially for a younger, smaller player—because the instinct is to dip the head through impact to try to generate more speed and help lift the ball. This dipping causes inconsistent contact, and the player actually loses power. A good focal point for a junior golfer—or any golfer, really—is to keep the head steady during the swing."

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
