This is a random question but figured I'd ask b/c I've only ever had standard grips. I've always felt 'cramped' when I grip a club but since I've been doing it for so long I've wondered if my hand size would be good for a midsize? jumbo?
my hand from wrist break to index/middle is 7.5" and my longest finger is (index/middle) 3.5"

any help?

The ends of the fingers on your left hand should LIGHTLY touch your palm, not dig, and not gap... if not, adjust accordingly.

does hand size really matter on grip size? i have a standard hand and can i not choose a grip that feels correct

Posted
From wrist to middle finger, the length is 8 1/4". My middle finger is 3 1/4". I use a standard grip. I could get away with using a standard grip with 2 wraps of tape, but the regular works just fine. With that said...remember this. Many players tend to grip with their hands, not their fingers. If you grip with your hands, the grip will be uncomfortable and feel small. Used your fingers..like your supposed to...and the fit will be correct and cramping will disappear. I know...cuz' I'm a recovering whole hand gripper.

Sounds like we have similar size hands as well. I swapped to the GolfPride New Decade Midsize grips and they have taken away literally all pain in my hands...

I don't think you can measure your way to finding the best grip. It feels different for everyone. Find a pro shop, ask to test all the sizes they have available, pick the one you feel most comfortable with. Perhaps you can change grip on only one club first, and hit lots of balls with it to see if you like the feel.

You might also find you don't want bigger grips.

Same here. PING screwed up my grip for the third consecutive custom order. I needed a grip that would work right then...not wait for them to send the correct grip. The shop put on a GolfPride New Decade Midsize grip with two wraps.

It is the most perfectly fitted and feeling grip that I've ever used. I'd like to have them throughout my bag!!! A little pricey but outstanding grips. They work well in the humid climate down here. Proper grip size/type is a major factor in your swing. It's the weld between you and the club. To the OP, try getting one stick regripped and see how it works for you. Good luck.

I switched to a midsize grip early last season and it was one of the best moves I ever made. I was getting tightness and pain in my thumb and ring fingers and finally tried a larger grip at the suggestion of a friend. Not only did the hand pain stop but I found I was slicing the ball less often as well. When you find the grip size that works for you, do yourself a favor and save yourself some money and watch a few online tutorials on how to regrip your clubs yourself. It's a little tedious, but worth the time with the money you'll save if you're doing a whole set of clubs.

Does anyone think that tape deadens the feel between grip and shaft? I mean its paper. I HATE that ridge that gets left underneath from overlapping tape too.. I regripped my clubs without tape and after 20+ rounds theyre still in the proper place. you dont NEED tape by any means, and alos makes the next regripping job that much easier.

Whether you regrip yourself or subcontract it out, visit a club repair shop and test out their sample grips which they put on sample club shafts . A skilled fitter can help check your hand size on the grips. That way, you can find the proper size and tape wrap for your hand size. (You can build up a normal size grip with extra tape, or simply buy a larger size grip).

My hands measures 7 1/2 and 3". I have original regular sized grips on the majority of my clubs. I have an oversized grip on my sw. It feels ok for my sw. I'm leaning towards some kind of midsized grip when I regrip my clubs for the season.

I'm thumbing through a golfsmith clubmaking catalog and I see alot of weights shown. Any thoughts on grip weight ?

Forget all the measurements and online tools. It's January. Take one of your clubs and get it re-gripped to a larger grip. Go to the driving range and see how you like it.

I go with Zeph on this. Try a couple different setups. Start with a midsize and add tape if it feels too small. Regripping is really an easy task and you can make your own tools (grip remover, tape scraper). I've switched to midsize Crosslines after years of standard Winn Excel RF #5s. Very relaxing and still a soft touch.
