Apple's new iPad for golf

I checked out the new iPad today and I like it, for a couple reasons. Looking to the future, you can get the Scorecard app to use on it. Recording the round as it happens appeals to me. Also the iPad is supposed to be a open device meaning you can get the 3G version and get it activated with AT&T; or maybe one of a couple other wireless companies to use on the internet. That means a 9 x 7 screen with course info like distances and layouts etc.

Maybe I am a dreaming a bit but I expect someone will build an app that uses Bluetooth to link a Laser rangefinder to the iPad allowing you to scope the hole and show the layout, and distances. Eric what do you think? There is no Bluetooth rangefinder on the market yet but with the flexibility of the iPad maybe Leupold or Nikon could make that happen.

Think about it, no more scorecards, just your rangefinder and an iPad mounted to your bagcart, all the info you could ever need plus the ability to record the results too. And it links to your mac when you get home so you can review the change in your stats. Too Cool

Not long ago it was unthinkable to use any electronic device as an aid in Golf. Holders for all kinds of devices are on the market for GPS. Why not one for the iPad to mount on a cart or bagcart?

Golfshot GPS on the iPhone is all I need. No way would I take an iPad out on the course.

Because I don't use a bag cart; I carry my clubs. I'll stick with the pencil and paper scorecard.

I'm sure the idea of everything you talking about is plausible but the cost and time make it impossible. Nothing will be cheaper than pencil and paper for scoring. The other problem I have is if you start doing bluetooth connections from laptops to rangefinders for course layout and yardage you would be looking at a very long round of golf. Plus I think the point of essentially bringing a laptop to the golf course would officially overstep the bounds.

You may already know, but you can do all that with the much cheaper and smaller iPod touch. Scorecard 2 works quite well with it.

Exactly.

We have no plans to do anything with Scorecard and the iPad. I also don't think I'd want to play golf with anyone who would bring an iPad on the golf course with them. And it's not because I care about phones on the course - they don't bother me. The iPad is a bigger iPod Touch. It's unimpressive, and while I'm sure it has its uses for some people, it's not a coincidence that almost every picture showing people using it shows them on the couch, not on a golf course.

Isn't that what you said about the iPhone.

Who would want to carry a big paper sized block of metal and glass around in their golf bag? It might me under 2 lbs but i would be more worried about it breaking. Plus, you cant take video with it so it's not a swing analyzer. Also, it's much bigger than a scorecard and a pencil.

Guys, he doesn't NEED to do anything with scorecard and the iPad. It will work as is. All iphone apps will run on the iPad.

Still, if I see someone with an iPad on the golf course, I think I may be tempted to see how close I can get to hitting it with my golf ball.

I use the heck out of my iPhone while on the course....and everywhere else, too.

The larger screen of the iPad would be nice for at home use. I couldn't see using it on the course, though.

I too use the Scorecard 2 ap on iPod Touch and like it ... But having the iPhone with GPS ap would be nice.

I love using Scorecard on the course and I love tracking my stats. Instead of spending $499-$829 on the ipad, you could spend $30 for scorecard 2 and take your laptop to the course...LOL (that is actually a terrible idea).

I've got to agree. iPad = way too big .. although I am a techie and LOVE the idea of having a larger screen for stuff like that. Can't really beat a smart phone to keep track of score and gps.

I bought the golfshot app for my iPhone and while I use the scorecard for stats it is almost always off on range via my skycaddie up to 10 yards. I can't see how the ipad would do much better. May slow down a few rounds if you get into a YouTube video lesson or something. Not for the golf course IMHO.
