I used to like this guy, but have recently noticed how he is constantly spitting. The other day he did it just as he was being announced on the first tee. Classy guy. Not.

I never realized how many golfers dip (chewing tabacco). Don't know if Johnson dips or not. But yeah, spitting and dipping are both pretty nasty. I hear Tiger is a spitter too.

seriously? who cares. i've noticed it too, and it's pretty clear that he doesn't dip, he is just spitting. it isn't like he is bending over and spitting in the cup i.e. sergio. so he has a bad taste in his mouth. who really gives a crap.

I personally don't have a problem with the chewing tobacco nor do I think it's classless...as long as they don't spat one on the green. Especially if it's in my line!

You walk around your workplace spitting, do you?

I'm not the biggest chewer in the world, but on the golf course, I almost always have a dip.

I wonder how many guys do actually chew on the course? If it's a lot of guys, they must hide it pretty well, because I can't tell it on hardly any of them.

no, but i work in an office. if i worked outside with the heat, dust, sand and walked 5mi i probably would.

It's never bothered me with playing partners. It's not uncommon for someone to dip or smoke. Never had someone be rude about it.

Now....if we were being televised and had galleries.....I imagine most guys wouldn't partake.

Not me, I'm retired.:) But I don't chew anyway. As far as Johnson is concerned, I never really noticed.

It's a cultural thing to some extent. Personally I'm not in the least offended and don't see the issue. In some countries noone has a problem with it. Like anything, it can be overdone but that wouldn't be Johnson IMO.

I'm 100% sure that every baseball player spits during their games, in their "workplace". Are you going to throw a fit about that, too?

How is this a thread? I didn't notice any spitting. I guess I was too busy watching him play golf. Maybe he had to get the sour taste out of his mouth on #14 after watching Molder make a 9 in the group in front of him and then Goydos do the same thing in his group 5 minutes later.

Ummm. To answer my own question earlier, I am about 90% sure D. Johnson chews. CBS just happened to leave the camera on him walking up the 14th green while they were going to a commercial break and I noticed he spit out his chew, and then quick put his right hand in his mouth to remove any tabacco still in there. It was real subtle, but an experienced chewer can spot that stuff.

I obviously have no problem what so ever w/ this. I myself chew on the golf course. Just thought I'd share..................

I have always dipped while playing golf never have spat on the greens and dont intend to either but I try to conceal it as I know alot of people do not care to see someone spitting all the time.

Doesn't bother me. I don't spit much, but I did when I played baseball, and if I get a mouthful of dust or sand I wouldn't see the problem. It's outdoors, so the workplace comparison is absurd. Wouldn't do it on concrete, in dry sand, or on the green, and I wouldn't hock a big phlegmball, but for spitting excess saliva somewhere grassy I don't see the problem.

I'm wondering if I ever saw Nicklaus or Watson or Crenshaw or Kite spit. Don't think I did. Hey...baseballers do it....so it's OK!
My original point was that when he did it on the first tee whilst he was being announced it was a pretty ordinary look.

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
