I don't have any tips, but I read that Nicklaus was extremely colorblind, to the extent that his wife had to lay out all of his outfits because he couldn't tell what went with what. He seemed to do OK at golf, though.

So this might seem like a crazy question, and for those of you with normal color vision, I’m sure you have never thought about this. I have a red green deficiency, so without getting into the long discussion I have on a daily basis, simply I can’t distinguish shading changes and some colors blend together. So when I’m attempting to read the green and determine my putt, it is very difficult to determine the break yet alone, the grain or anything else. So I’m kind of wondering if any other golfers have this problem and have a solution or if anyone has any tips on how to read greens differently. Thanks for the input.

It's not exactly the same, but my father is blind in his left eye. It hurts his depth perception a little, and he isn't very good at picking up the ball as it comes off the face (he's a righty, the left eye is a little closer), but he's still a pretty good golfer.

there are certain GPS units and apps for smartphones that help you read breaks. You might consider using something like that.

Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.

Just use your feet. Walk around and feel the slope of the ground. You can't walk on the line of putt, but you can get a good idea of breaks. Also, you can "plumb-bob" with your putter.

That is interesting that jack was colorblind, maybe there is hope for me yet. And I know how he feels with having his clothes laid out, I go through the same morning struggle.

I thought Jack was just distinctly average at golf

Just make sure you don't anger your significant other, or else you may go out looking like Ronald McDonald one day!

My greatest area of CB is in green-brown ‚•I can see em but I can't always verbalize which is which in certain shades — which which I think stems from some form of red green CB.

But I have no trouble with red and green colors, per se, it just manifests in green-brown. Always thought my green reading was decent for a rank amateur. I try to do an evaluation of the break, but also attempt to incorporate a lot of instinct in the actual putt, esp. on long putts. Better distance control would be more beneficial to me at this point, and that's something I have to earn through more practice -- as I know I don't practice nearly enough nor probably methodically enough. I'm averaging around 37.5 putt per round (2.08) and began my first attempts at swatting at balls 5 years ago (age 44) -- mostly 9 hole courses, but with some tricky greens nonetheless. Last year was the first year I started to get out to play golf with any regularity. The putting green nearest work which I visit sporadically, has a big wicked turtle back shape, with a very slight plateau on top. Slopes off a little flatter (mercifully) on one side like the back of a horseshoe crab. Many different hole positions. A great challenge at any time, it offers some of those inside-out semi-circular putt opportunities if you want, that barely a tap, will roll 8 feet past the hole -- or worse when it's playing fast. Torture or challenge? pick your poison.
