Because of my penchant of not being able to hit the 3 and 4 irons at all, and the 5 and 6 irons consistently, I just ordered a combo set of irons (Nike VR forged Split Cavity and Forged Blades). I got the 3i-6i in the Split Cavity and the 7-PW in the blades. I just traded in my TaylorMade Forged TP MB blades for these combo irons. I sat there and tested out all at least ten different irons, and felt that the Nike's were the best feeling, easiest to hit, and appeasing to the eye.

The question I really have is whether this is common? I know some tour pros use a combo package for their long irons (3,4, and sometimes a 5), but considering i'm not pro, I just felt that this was a good idea for my game and made most sense. I felt odd placing the order like I was an anomaly, but I did it anyways because I figured at the end of the day it about improving my play and gaining confidence. Feedback is welcome...

It is becoming very common. If I had not bought a premade combo set, I was going to mix models into my own combo set. The last few sales brochures I have seen the manufacture had printed recommendations on which sets to combine. I think the Mizuno one I have lists three different models to make one set of irons.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I'm looking to buy R9 TP's 7-PW to replace my Burners...I think it's only uncommon because everything for the most part is sold in a set, not combo'd...

I like the idea and am going to go that route soon.

In the old days it seemed continuity was a big plus. But I think we are learning now it is not that big a deal. With clubs being more specific to the job at hand people are getting used to lots of different looks in one set. Once you start playing them that way you just accept it and get used to it. Before you know it that is the new "normal".

I always used to grip my clubs with the same grips all the way through. Of late I have bought some new wedges and woods. I have not replaced the stock grips out to match my corded wrap grips I have on my irons. So far it has not bothered me one bit.

I'm getting ready to mix my irons. I'm debating which set to use, and which (? - P) to swap out. But it's very common, especially among TST folk.

I was looking to do the same, possibly exactly what you did with the VRs (3-6 splits, 7-pw blades), or maybe a combo set with Mizunos. My question is, do any of those manufacturers lets you make a combo set for no extra cost? Or do you have to special order it, so therefore you're buying each club individually, and it would cost a lot more.

Usually the cost of one iron from a set or a single irons is the same. I know the VR blades are 1000 for 3-PW and a single iron will cost 125$. Concerning Mizuno, here in Europe they sell their irons singularly because they encourage mixed sets.

I have sort of a "mixed set" because I have 4-PW AP2 irons and my 3-iron is a Ping I10 because I can launch it a little higher (the AP1 flew too high).

Yes, they do. That's exactly what I did yesterday. I was at golfsmith and we special ordered it through Nike. Basically all they did was breakdown the clubs individually and order them through Nike in that matter with my specs. Mixing and matching wasnt a problem. I asked the rep if this could have been done with any set, and they said pretty much. The only ones that it couldnt be done on are those starter sets (driver through SW sold together) or if the manufacturer states that they can't. I just dont see a company being that restrictive...

Some clubmakers build it into their sets. The Ping I15 has larger, more cavity-back clubs on the longer irons, and smaller, more musclebaked irons 7i and above.

In Titleist, some of the pre-AP1 | AP2 models had up to three types of heads - large, mid, small - mixed within their sets. (Sorry I can't remember the specific models).

Also, Adams and others have 3i, 4i, maybe 5i as hybrids, and then pick up with more traditional iron heads for higher lofted clubs.

Plus, the mixed set could be a major intimidation factor to people you play against competitively.

How i would be intimidated by people that play all blades but if they use forgiving long irons i know they can hit long irons well.

I'm thinking of adding Titleist 710 MB's 6-9 and keeping my AP2 3-5 this year. Not sure if I'll end up doing it ($$$$$$) or not but I already bought the MB PW and absolutely love it and find myself giving myself any reason possible to hit the PW I can now.

I grew up playing a mixed set .......

PowerBilt 3,5,7 & 9 blade irons were a high school graduation gift from my Grandfather......I had a spalding 2 iron, then an older Powerbilt 4,6, & 8.

not because they played better, but because that's what I could put together......played them from 1968 until 1983....15 years.

personally I think the combo set is the way to go
I had the Nike PFCombos last year..wish I never got rid of them

I just bought some CCi Forged and was thinking of comboing them with some older Nike Blades (the plain ones w just the swoosh) from 8-PW
still lookin for a good enough deal

your set is essentially what I would like to do, but I would have done:

3i-full cavity
4-7i-split cavities
8-PW-TW Blades

OR

3i-Titleist AP1
4-7i-Titleist 710.CB's
8-PW-Titleist 710.MB's

yea..that would be sweeeet!!!! hahah!

I believe this is becoming more common every day.

I play the Titleist ZB forged 3-P. The 8-P are blades, the 6 & 7 are MB and the 3-5 are CB. After buying these and playing them for awhile I wondered why these "blended" sets weren't more popular than they ended up being??

Got to the golf shop today to get some work done on an old putter, and while I was waiting, I wandered around the used irons. My heart dropped: MP-32, 5-P, reasonably good condition, less than $200. Too bad the shafts were 6.5.

I will get the mixed set before too long, but today was not that day.
