I am not one who cares about training dvd's. That being said every time I see the A.J. ad on The Golf Channel I can't help but watch it. Has anyone tried it. What is the secret? I still do not think that a dvd can transform your game but this guy makes it look so easy and ordinary. So is it legit or another one of the millions of dvd's that end up in the back of the closet.

I got it as a gift from my wife (shows how bad my golf game is!!!).

It is okay. The basic idea I got from it was that he is trying to get people to translate their skills from other sports to golf. If you have played baseball, ping pong, or tennis you have a basic understanding of why the ball does what it does. A slice or hook is from bad timing, late or early, or if it has a late spin one way or the other it could be from your lie angle being off. Like I said it is okay. He shoes some drills at the end and most of them are some that you could see on the Golf Fix on the Golf channel.

One thing that I did like was how he says so many people have different swings but are still successful in golf. The idea is that there is no perfect swing but more of a perfect contact, and that is his focus, the contact with the ball. He has lots of good points but I don't know if I would say it was worth the price.

There's this article by Erik from a long time ago. And one of the reader's comments:

"His suggestion, again - set up normally, but rotate the club and your hands open about 10 degrees. Take your normal backswing, but make a conscious effort to keep the right palm facing the target line. On your downswing, 3-4 feet from the impact area, make a conscious effort to pronate your wrists."

A little googling will probably lead to a lot more discussion. These DVDs have been out for a long time.

I'm still amazed at the fact these guys even sell a single DVD. It makes me feel pessimistic about the human race. You watch an ad on TV, and they show how they must be telling the truth, because look, [example]!

Maybe this is off topic, but it's a pet peeve.

They control the damn commercial, what do you expect? No matter what they say, or what they do, it's still an ad. Human beings are so stupid, that people still mark prices as "$4.99" instead of "$5.00". That's how stupid people are. They think "4" instead of "5". If you've ever called in and bought something from an infomercial, then be ashamed.

These products all carry the designation, "not available in stores!" Yeah? That's because stores have buyers who will only stock merchandise that isn't crap. You can buy a Porsche in a store, you can buy a Donzi in a store, you can buy a Learjet in a store, you can even buy an SSL console in a store, but you know what you can't buy in a store? The sham-wow, the ab [insert rocker/lounge/circle, etc. here], the Hercules hook, that's what.

Save your money.

I really hated the infomercial for this DVD. Can someone tell me why he is doing card tricks?!? Just another gimmick and the testimonials are just flat lies probably. One example, "AJ accomplished for me what 15 years and I don't know how many thousands of dollars didn't accomplish...and he did it in one day."

Speaking of terrible infomercials, the "Hammer" commercial was on today and I had some fun laughing at it for a few minutes before changing it...POW!! I was also wondering...how do Jack Hamm and the people that make Hammer have enough money to have that dumb commercial stay on the air for over 10 years? Also, best line of the Hammer commercial is when some dude says, "If Jack Hamm could JUST 3-putt every green he would make over $1 million per year on the PGA Tour." HAHA

Whether it's golf dvd's, toothpaste, or politicians, every ad is designed to attract your attention. Some things advertised are worthwhile, others or not. Back a few years, a new product came upon the scene through infomercials; it was the Orlimar fairway wood. Turned out it was a great product.

AJ's videos are OK. I actually checked it out from the library. I'm not a fan of consciously manipulating the clubhead, so it didn't work for me. But several guys who watched it with me said it helped their game. Is it worth $90? Maybe to some people, for whom the instruction makes sense.

The Truth about Aj is that he doesn't know any more about golf than you do, He just knows how to sell dvd's on TV better than you, that's the secret, lol

You will never play consistantly good golf by manipulating your wrists through the swing.

You don't have to buy the DVD's to get the information. I remember reading an interview he gave for one of the golf rags online and he basically tells you everything about his method for free. He advocates fanning the clubface open by rolling your wrists in the backswing and then closing the clubface as fast as you can through impact by rolling your wrists the opposite way. To make this method work you have to experiment and ingrain the proper timing of the wrist roll through impact. Roll too late and you are in the right rough, too early...left rough. I experimented with this method a few seasons ago. It took a while to get the timing and the correct feel and I always had to dial the swing in before I played or would throw away the first few holes. When I got the timing down, it stuck with me for a while and I was hitting really straight shots and some incredibly long drives. The physics behind the increase to clubhead speed is sound (shaft speed + sweet spot speed relative to shaft). I ultimately abandoned the method in favor of a simpler swing that is proving to be more consistent. A PGA player that fans the clubface open early in the swing (during takeaway) is Rod Pampling. So, this isn't a hoax swing.

That's not really sound. There's very little power to be had in rotating the clubface as if it's a "little bat."

I don't know how fast a person can rotate the clubface, but 500 rpm translates to approximately 5mph.

This is a terrible method. Yeah sure, it works, but look at the timing involved. You have to be dead on accurate, and if people were that coordinated, a lot more people would be striking pure golf shots. Look at Charles Barkley. His swing is absolutely terrible, so much to the point that the average person wouldn't even be able to make contact with the ball. Now look at how well he hits it considering how absurd the swing is. He's got amazing coordination, which is the only thing that even allows him to have that swing. If a lesser athlete tried to swing like that, they'd top, duff, shank, whiff, and quit the game pretty quickly.

For people to be able to play good golf, they need to find a swing that they can repeat time and time again, and get the same results with. The swing you mention is not such a swing, and even you admitted you went back to a simpler swing.

Yeah, I guess I have to ultimately agree. The flash speed comes from somewhere though because the method can add distance. Like I said, I am not an advocate of the swing, I gave it up for a better one.

It may have worked because it can get those that struggle with "hitting from the top" and flipping at the bottom to delay enough to have some reserve left to "hit at the bottom"... not really what you want to do, but at least you're getting some acceleration through the ball. Combined with the pronating of the wrists (which delofts the club a bit), and you just might hit it better/farther -- usually if you're a typical high-handicap slicer. But those positions can all be achieved with more repeatable sequencing of other muscles (with even more power).

Waste of money, get the S&T; DVDs by Bennett and Plummer instead.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
