this proves my observations that more and more people are picking up the game without realizing or understanding the game itself...the etiquette that goes with it or the manor in which it's played...individuals can be great, but people can be beyond reproach.

IMHO, this has been going on since I was a kid.....whether public or private courses, I saw it 30 years ago, and I see it now......I'm guessing it has always been around, at least to an extent.....at least 3+ times every season, I get hit into.....just like the author mentioned, it's on days where the golf course is backed everywhere, so it's not like you can let someone play through and fix the problem......I've also been paired, as a single, with groups that get frustrated at slow play (even though the course is backed up) and they are tempted to hit into the group.....I will always speak up, letting them know I refuse to hit into anyone, it's dangerous.....most of the time, the instigators understand etiquette - they just don't care....

Last year, weekend round at a local muni here.....we are in a 4some, behind 4somes all over the course, it's a Sunday round.....anyway, the 3some behind got impatient....on the 2nd hole, they hit just as we were exiting the green.....ball didn't get close to us, no big deal.....sitting in the fairway on the 3rd hole, they hit just as we started to walk - ball rolled up on us, I'm getting a bit concerned.....just as we finish putting out on the 3rd (we are still on the green), I see the guy hitting from about 160.....he must have caught it thin, the ball comes in low and hot, right about head height, luckily not hitting any of us......this is the last straw, I have my wedge and putter in hand, I start walking back to them with offers to settle this right now.......I am not a violent man, but when the safety of myself and friends are threatened, I got zero issue protecting myself......

Not proud of my blow-up - it's the first and only time that has happened, but I take multiple hits into my group as a threat......after my little tirade and "offer" to the offending group, they kept their distance the rest of the day.....not saying what I did was right, because it wasn't, but it's what happened.....I'm not violent at all, but even the nicest guy will protect himself if the situation merits...

One of the reasons I don't like the combination of alcohol and golf. Yelling at someone is one thing, but to whack a guy with a club? That's mental...

I'm mostly disappointed after hitting a bad shot, dropping the club to the ground. Haven't really had any incidents involving other people on the course.

I try to encourage people that have never played golf to give it a try, if it is a sport that they would like to get into i always encourage them to learn the rules and etiquette. I will even lend them my books on it I may seem a little strange to some people but I was taught not to go to the golf course in jeans or work clothes. I always wear clothes appropriate for a Clountry club i.e. golf slacks (black) nice golf shirt or sweater look like a respectable golfer. Not sandles cut off jean shorts t shirt that says "I am not fat this is just a gas tank for a beer machine" I do not guzzle a six pack before the turn and will never laugh at you for hitting a poor shot. I do not give swing advice unless someone asks for my input. Act like a gentleman obey the rules and a fun time will be had by all. I do not look down upon those that approach the game differantly, I feel they where not taught the same reverance for tha game than I was. It's just how I was taught the game, unfortunately other view it as a good way do guzzle beer and act like a fool. They usually will not end up playing with me for long, that's not my thing. But I will always encourage people to play the greatest sport known to man and maybe the way I act will rub off on someone else. Sorry to be long winded but I feel strongly about this particular subject

Were you wearing your hair rollers? That is an amazing visual! Large black man, hair in rollers, thundering toward you with a club in each hand yelling... "I know you dint".

Ever noticed that you can talk to a complete stranger in a bar and if they golf, you immediately hit it off. Put the same two strangers on a golf course and in separate groups and it all of a sudden becomes territorial confrontation between the two.

I will give a person maybe one or two accidentals. If i am out there and he is behind me pushing me, gets one shot to come close. I will move one, it happens again, i will let him know not to do it. If it happens one more time, his golf ball will accidenlty find it self about 100 yards shorter than it would normally be.

This was going long before I started playing golf and that was a long time ago.

Some people have trouble playing golf. Some golfers have trouble being people. Let's pack them tightly together on a Sunday afternoon and see what happens.

For the record, no alcohol had been consumed and no rollers were harmed in the incident...
