Hello,

I am 14 years old, 5' 2, and own a Titleist D-Comp driver with a Regular shaft. Distance is my weakspot in this game. I average my drives about 200 yards. I use a Titleist ProV1. I don't know exactly my Club Head speed. I am about a 12 Handicap. I am just wondering what you reccomend to increase yardage 10-30 yards, do I need a weaker shaft? New driver? (I know companies constantly come out with new equipment each year but is it REALLY better than last years stuff?)How is my D-Comp based off the specs I told you. I would like tips to instantly increase yardage if at all possible and long term excersizes/teqhniques as I have a tournament tommorow.

Also, what would you say is the highest spinning wedge on the market? I love my Titleist wedges and want to try a few others out before I replace my Titleists which groove's worn out. I carry a 52, 56, and 60 and thinking about getting a 62-07...

What do you think?

Thanks

At 14 years old I was about 5'8", so distance was not my problem but you might want to check out getting fit for a shaft. The D-Comp is great but you really want your shaft optimized to get everything out of it that you can. The ProV1 doesn't help distance, but if you like the spin and feel you should not change. If you have enough spin already, maybe try the ProV1X, but your swing speed might not be enough to really optimize that ball.

In my experience, you can't beat Vokey's for spin, so I would stick with those if you like them.

hard to say without seeing the swing, but if the driver is that short, you probably don't have appropriate leverage in your swing. When you shift your weight back, make sure you maintain knee flex in your right knee with the weight on the ball of your feet.

Hello,

tournament tomorrow you say?, ok .......... just move the ball up a bit in your stance (very near or on the left toe), you should gain a few extra yards, at least for now ....... good luck tomorrow

Thanks, I will try that. Just a little pet peeve of mine, the ProV1X actually spins more with less trajectory because of the harder core of the ball. It is actually the soft cover that compresses more making it grip the face better assuming you have clean grooves. The ProV1 has a higher trajectory though because you compress the core more than the cover. But if you ever hit a crisp shot with a 1X and it seems to go lower, it has a lot of spin, it means when you hit it, no grass or debris was between the face and the ball upon impact. Trust me, I have done so much testing with Golf balls and how they react with wedges.

And no, my swing speed is not fit for the ProV1X off the driver, trajectory too low. ProV1 is better but not best. I use it for feel and spin around greens, I NEED a good ball around the greens or I am all over the place.

As soon as you know your average swing speed, you can fit a ball for distance with this chart I got from Titleist ball fitting

Short term, I'd try to tee it a little higher/move forward to see if it works. Long term, I'd work on the legs. I'm about 6' tall, very thin, very lanky. I generate clubhead speed by using a big sweeping arc. My cousin who's probably around 5'8" is a walking muscle (runs marathons, ironmans, cycles, etc.). His swing is pretty compact, but he's able to generate a lot of power from his legs up. Flexibility is always important as well, but at 14, you're probably pretty flexible. Good luck in your tournament.

On a Golf Channel show, those young twins, Naree or Saree (Thai?), I forget their names, actually mentioned this seriously for their drives. Never tried it - didn't sound too convincing.

Just think about that from a science standpoint- What actually could it do?

I will try those, I will also try delayed hand release I read up on. I will video my swing today at the range and post in this thread later tonight, thanks.

It might matter a little. If you tilt the ball forward, then your cutting down on the contact with the tee it self. But you got to ask, does that affect the ball much anyways when the clubhead is coming in at such a speed and the ball leaves at a multiple of that speed. Honestly the time the ball has to contact the driver isn't significant, especially when you ascend with the driver, the launch angle is close to 12-14 degrees. It might clear the lip of the tee normally teed up..

For me to increase distance, keep the driver lower on the takeaway, and get better extension. They did a study and found the larger the difference between the angle in which the club is taken away compared to the angle the driver has on the downswing makes distance.

I don't think there is a tip you can get today that will help you tomorrow unless you could post a video of your swing. That should be your immediate goal a video for analysis.

It ain't bragging if you can do it.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
