For a one plane swing, what is the first move down from the top of the backswing? I always thought it was the hip slide, but should there be a noticeable delay with the upper body?

It depends. Some people feel things differently. Some start down all at once, others start with the lower body. Almost nobody starts with the upper body, that much I can say.

Its hard to explain, i really don't feel it, but i know in my swing that my hips fire first.

I use a one plane swing, and it all starts in my feet, then works up the legs into the hips and trunk, up to the chest and arms everything working together at the MOI perfectly, I get more distance from my drives, then most people go on vacation


My feeling is that the goal from the top of the swing is to get the club and hands down to a simliar position that you had when you brought the club back. Check your position on the backswing when you got the club to parallel to the ground.....If you swing from the top and you over do it with the lower body...you hands have nowhere to go but over the top or off plane. I feel that it is important to make sure to give yourself as much room as possible to get your club and hands back to that parallel to the ground position and then clear through with lower body connected. If you need to work on keeping your lower body quiet to do that than thats the area of focus....think more Retief or Ernie...in other words, if you arent Jim Furyk than dont swing like him.

A good drill to teach you lower body to hold off on the down swing is to either drop your right foot (assuming a righty) back and make a full swing. You will be surprised how solid and square the contact is. Keeps your hips from clearing prematurely and allows for a square approach to the ball. Too often the downswing is initiated with too much lower body and it produces off plane contact.

I've been pushing (not enough) and rotating (too much) the hips from the top. They got to 0 degrees before the club had reached the top of the backswing. From there, the arms had no chance to catch up. So I'm currently working on getting the upper and lower body to start at the same time. The arms usually move a little longer than the hips, so the hips wait for the arms to stop, then everything starts moving. The important factors being my head staying still and hips pushing forward all the way through the swing.

Once it started, the hips just keep pushing and the arms follow. If I want more distance, the arms can add some speed on the downswing.

Made my swing totally different. Fixed a lot of things and made the stuff I work on easier. You just have to find out what works best for you, depending of how each part of your body moves.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open. 
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
    • Day 47 - 2024-11-16 Light backswing work with about 3 or 4 rehearsals for every ball hit. Only about ten minutes while waiting for a potential member to show up (he was 25 minutes late). 😛 
    • Idk but I would have to imagine that a putter that is aimed where you think it's aimed would be the most important aspect of a putter
