Hey guys, so I wan't to replace my 5 wood with a Hybrid I'm thinking the same degree 18. I have no problem hitting my long Irons (love to actually) so what would you recommend? I'd like maybe a last year's model to keep the price down. Thanks in advance

XCG 18*... they have since come out with the XCG-V and the XCG-3 so you can probably scoop up the XCG for a pretty cheap price. I havent hit the XCG-3 yet but i tried XCG-V and didnt think it setup as well as the XCG.

Hope this helps.

The 18* hybrid I have (Nike SQ Sumo) is a great club and it's only 90 bucks now that the VR hybrids are out.

3 Wood: Taylormade Rocketballz

Hybrid: Nike Sumo 18*

Irons: Titleist AP1 4-PW

Wedges: Cleveland CG12 60* 56* & 52*

I used to play the Nike SQ 18 degree hybrid, it wasn't the easiest hybrid to hit but had a great sound and feel to it. I now use the TM 09 rescue in 19 degrees. It goes pretty much the same distance as the 18 degree nike but it goes a little lower than I'd like so will change to the 909h (which i demoed with the TM 09 but got a better deal on the tm so went with that) when funds allow.

I recently dropped my 60* and added an 18* Adams Pro Gold Hybrid. So far I don't regret the trade off. I've found a lot more instances when I use the 18* than the 60*. To me, it's as easy to hit as any of the other hybrids. It fills a nice gap between my 15* 3 wood and 20* 3H.

I just don't get it with hybrid less than 20 degree loft. Aren't they supposed to replace long irons? 18 degree is very hard to hit either with the iron or the hybrid version.

I would just pick a fairway wood 5 instead. They have bigger heads and longer shafts which will provide extra swing speed. Even the Tour Pros still using the 5 Woods.

Yea actually I've been eyeing the Pro Gold, as I see you have 3 so you must like them? what shaft do you have in the 18*? I've seen they come with 2 different kinds, and not sure what one is right for me?

I do have a 5 wood but just dont hit it like I want to, like I said in my OP I hit my long irons well, my 3 is 21* and I usually hit it @ 200-210 and I think the hybrid would have more accuracy as opposed to just distance.

I don't find the 14-18* hybrids any harder to hit than other hybrids, still somewhat easier to hit than equivalent fairway woods, and a lot easier than a 1 iron or 2 iron. I'd recommend the Cobra Baffler DWS or TWS in 18*, and the Adams Idea Pro Gold 18*.

It's a really nice club-definitely the hybrid for better players, but it's also $199, and the OP wants to keep the price down.

I find no difference between hitting any of the hybrid lofts. They're all easy. If anything, I find the 25*+ hybrids harder simply because the way they look at address. They kind of make you want to do a forward press.

I have the red Matrix Ozik shaft. It's he only one I've tried. I liked it so much, I never bothered testing the JAVLN. I tested a bunch of hybrids before I bought these and found the Pro Golds to be the best combination of distance, forgiveness and price.

The other thing I like about the 18*H is the ball flight tends to be more like an iron vs a wood. It sits pretty well when it hits the green.

    • I was there just for sunday, and it went smoothly. Thanks @Hardspoon for helping in setting this up.
    • I say this in believing the guy should just pay you and he's a d**k for not.  Do you guys play by the USGA rules strictly? If so, then the claim is valid. It sucks, but it is. Again, he is a d**k for being that nitpicky over it. If he wants to play the game of waiting for you to finish to have his ah-ha moment, again he's a d**k. Though, if the putter is non-conforming, you maybe able to claim that it is not a club?  Just talk to your group and don't invite him back.
    • Couple of added points.  It was pink and maybe 18 long.  I am 6 1   And he waited until the round was over to say something when he was in my 4 some in the other cart.
    • I would have paid you. I think it's a reasonable assumption that the extra putter was not in play.  Having said that "Did you declare the extra putter out of play?"  This person seems like a bit of a weenie and he is also setting a dangerous precedent. Let's say he wins next month. Then when it's your turn to pay up, you could refuse. Telling him "I timed you on hole 8 and you searched for your ball and found it at 3 minutes and 1 second. So, you should have taken stroke, plus distance and didn't." You could then show him your stopwatch feature on your phone where you timed it out to 3:01 and say "See."  I actually would just let it go and assume the guy is a weenie. Because doing stuff like that takes the fun out of friendly bets. If he can't afford to pay up, he shouldn't bet.
