With so many people posting their swing videos online here and everywhere, I noticed that the early release in many of them, cupped wrist, club forms straight line with left hand well before clubface gets to the ball.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I would guess most instructors say over the top is the weekend golfer's biggest problem. Isn't it not releasing correctly or timing the release correctly or whatever you want to call it the biggest problem?

If instructors figured out how to solve this fault, wouldn't that put a big dent in high handicaps? And why is it so hard to learn? It does seem counterintuitive at first because you want to swing at the ball.

You should never release the club in a golfswing. The right hand bends and left hinges on the backswing, they will unhinge and unbend on the downswing, but that is because of the forces applied to the club when swinging it.

Releasing the club, or flipping, or rolling if you want, is often a result of others things being wrong. If you get the rest sorted out, and do some work on getting the wrists a bit quieter, but still holding the flying wedge, they will unhinge and unbend on the downswing, but not completely, you want the forward-leaning shaft at impact, and to keep the flying wedge through impact all the way to the finish.

Most common cause for over the top I would guess was a poor take-away, hands moving away from the body, weight too far back and starting the downswing with the arms.

Going over the top can lead to flipping at the ball. Hence the instructors going at the root of the problem. They don't always do it well, but that is the thinking at least.

Nah. Too far inside on the way back and/or hitting from the top with the arms/shoulders as the first move.

Going OTT doesn't necessarily mean you'll flip at it.

What he said! You can't time it right as a deliberate action. If you get the main points of the downswing right, the release will happen properly of its own accord.

There is no timing, the correct fundamentals will and swing will release the club automatically.

    • A strong grip cups the wrist (lead) and then it wants to flatten through impact, something I used to be able to avoid to keep it from going left and protecting my forearm (the main premise of my set up). Longer the club, harder it is becoming. Either way, yes, I need to transition to gripping it open.
    • Why don't you grip it "open" so you can return your hand to the place where you're comfortable/not sore, but the ball won't go left? It's effectively weaker… without actually "being" weaker?
    • Day 47 - 2024-11-16 Light backswing work with about 3 or 4 rehearsals for every ball hit. Only about ten minutes while waiting for a potential member to show up (he was 25 minutes late). 😛
