I don't see how a low handicapper could miss the ball that badly with a colossaly oversized 460cc face... just sayin'

I can, with a bad, steep swing. Anyway, the OP asked the question for woods in general...not driver specific.

Like I said it happened to me last year. Doesn't matter that I had already hit a couple hundred balls before it happened...bottom line is it happened. I am not (nor ever will be) immune to making mistakes....just sayin'
Or . . . maybe if you were

Ha, that's good. I have always been an aggressive swinger and still tend to get steep from time to time, and to be honest I have never worried about it. I'll keep swinging the way that provides the best results fo me...even if that means a skymark every few years.

I picked up a little Titleist 5-wood off ebay last fall. The original owner must been a good ballstriker - there are so many marks on the sweet spot it's almost unbelievable. Of course there are a few sky marks too. It's a really nice wood either way.

no one is immune, and I buy your explanation... but like you said it happened once. I hope it didn't leave a mark, cause that would suck.

as a side note, there was once a club member with more money than brains, and if he got a sky mark on his club, he would trade it in and buy a new one... becuase he didn't want people to think he was a bad golfer...

Cheers, Allan

Thats stupid, just color over them with a Sharpie if they start to get real bad. You can't tell at address, or even looking at the club, only of you get close and are looking for it.......not that...I've ever done that......or something.......:)

It happens to everyone at some point. I did it when I was a high handicap. I also tend to tee the ball a mile in the air and I like to hit it high on the face. The very top of the face, right before it meets the crown is absolutely covered in ballmarks, they say that decreases spin and launches it higher to hit it there.

I actually recently put one on my driver. I was on the first tee, no warmup, nothing, and my leg was at the height of it's problems. I took a swing, and boom, popped it right up into the air. It was really awful. Fortunately, most skymarks come right out, all you have to do is take a toothbrush and some toothpaste, and scrub the top. The toothpaste is a mild abrasive that cleans the mark right off the club.

No no, I was playing along. I really think it's a good idea. Not that I have any need to use it, of course.

Gotcha, it's hard to tell on the computer :)

Personally I find that a ultra fine point sharpie works the best, you can get in close and really detail that baby out lol!!

I used this on a couple of used drivers I have bought, it really does work well as you can barely tell it ever happened.

I have a couple of marks on top of my 3 wood. When i use it off the the tee, sometimes i tend to tee it up too high and swing under the ball. Its not bad though.

I'm probably jinxing myself, but there aren't any on my old Callaway BB Warbird for the same reason - not painted.

The G10 has a taller face (way taller). My misses are mostly vertical (centre of the clubface, but high or low) but it would be pretty hard to miss the face on that thing.

I hit one a few months ago with my new r9........ouch, but I also got a little tipsy on the course so I wasn't that upset. It also wasn't directly on the top, more like a half and half.

Yes - I have this problem when teeing off with my 3 wood. As per above I tend to tee slightly too high and then lunge a little. I had a low profile Titleist 906f4 with embarassing damage to the crown... recently changed club!

My old driver looked horrible with all the sky marks on it, so I put a piece of electrical tape across the crown to do 2 things: Hide them, and prevent any more. When I got tired, I would get too steep and have the occasional pop up, but the electrical tape protected the driver, and since they were both black, it wasn't even noticeable.

My problem nowadays is exactly opposite...... So I haven't gotten a sky mark on my new driver.
