to Vokey or not to ....

I currently use 3 Wilson Staff Gun Metal TW-9 wedges (52/8, 56/12 and 60/6) .... they are nice wedges, maybe a bit on the heavy side. The sixty degrees is hardly ever used. The 52 is used a lot around the green and for about all those shots needing a quick stopping shot over a bunker or other hazard. The SW is only used from the sand and we don't have very soft sand overhere, so when the sand is wet and hard to get through I mostly use the 52 with the blade opened.

What I would like is the 52 to do is ...... adding more backspin.

Looking at "better" wedges I see that most of our local low handicap players use the Vokey's

My local retailer is a dealer of Cleveland and Titleist AND is very fond of the Laser grooves on the CG15 ..... I am in doubt and I feel that their 52 has a bit too much bounce (10)...... in an ideal world the bounce wouldn't heart from the grass (hitting the ball first), but being only a HC 14 player ..... not all my shots are like being in an ideal world......

That's a good wedge (I think there's a video somewhere of Padraig using those wedges and making them spin and stop like crazy), and 8-10 degrees of bounce is about optimal for a 52*. I don't think you'll see appreciably more spin from a different wedge, your swing and the ball you use probably have more effect on spin. I've got a 52* Vokey (now bent to 53*), a PING iwedge 52*, and I've used the Adams Tom Watson PVD 52* wedge. They all spin.

Cannot comment on Vokeys but I have the Ping Tour W wedges and they are great, I say go test them along with the Vokeys and the Cleveland's and decide which ones feel right as wedges are all about feel.

I only play 2 wedges by the way, a 54/10 and 60/08 the 54 for pitching & chipping around the green and both the 54 & 60 as bunker clubs depending on bunker location and face height.

Are you sure the 52 only comes with a 10 degree bounce. The Cleveland wedges are labeled with a "Dot System" on the wedge head. I think 1 dot is low bounce (6-8), 2 dot is standard 8-10, and 3 dot is high bounce +10. You can go to the Cleveland website to print out a spec sheet for the CG line of Wedges.

I always stick with Cleveland wedges. Been playing them for years and years now. Sure the whole laser milled CG15 might seem gimmicky and I can't say I've noticed more control and spin over any other wedge I've used but it sure does the job well.

I just bought a Callaway X Tour wedge 52* for very cheap...haven't hit it yet but we'll see how they compare.

Vokeys/Clevelands are bound to be a step up from your Wilsons. Wilson makes decent clubs, but you wouldnt find very many people who would call them the best at anything.
You might also want to test out some Mizuno wedges too if you get the chance.

Love my Vokey, but have to disagree. Wilson Staff and the TW9 wedges are top notch golf equipment. Popularity and marketing does not necessarily translate to superior quality.

Callaway and Mizuno wedges from a couple of years ago are going on sale for $70 or so.

Also, test hit the wedges to determine if the measured bounce (shown on clubhead) is the same as the effective bounce (how the club interacts with turf on impact.) Sometimes they differ.

I played Clevelands for 10 plus years. I believe the 588 RTG. Loved them. But after a 10 plus year break from the game I decided to replace everythying but my wedges and putter. That was until I came across the Vokeys. (I am very glad I heard the talk here and from a friend and I decided to give them a go) I love them!! That being said I doubt you could go wrong with the CG15s either. So go with what feels good in your hand and looks right to your eye.

You really can't go wrong with any of them, be it Wilson Staff, Vokey, Callaway, Mizuno, Scratch, etc.

I've been slowly transferring my clubs from Nike to Titleist. I currently play the Vokey 56* 10* bounce and I love it. I've only played Nike SV tour wedges so I am kind of bias.

to the op, i have used the cleveland CG12,14 and 15, recently using a vokey 58* and i have to say i love the vokeys more but, that's just personal preference. hit em all, pick what you like better. keep the names of the clubs and the people who play them out of it.

I personally have the CG15's and love them. The Vokey's however are also VERY solid. I guess it comes to what looks comfortable to you when you stand over the ball.
