Making my picks right now for a season long Majors pool, including THE PLAYERS, lets get some discussion going on who we think will play well this week.

I think Furyk will have another solid week playing in his backyard. Finished T5 last year, T27 year before with a 76 in the final round, and played pretty well last week. I'm hoping he can keep the hot play and go for win #3 on the season.

Harrington has also been fairly consistent this year, except for the Masters, and could be in a good spot for his first victory of the season.

And for my wildcard pick of the week, I'll take Steve Marino to win. Guy has all the game in the world to win on Tour, just hasn't broken through yet. Plays well in the big tournaments and what better spot to win your first PGA Tour title. Thoughts?

I agree with you on Furyk, and Marino is always a solid pick to do decent, though I don't see him winning. I think Tiger will have a bit of a bounce back week. Make the cut, contend, maybe win, likely top ten. My wild cards? Sergio, Adam Scott, and Alvaro Quiros. Sergio mainly because I was watching the 2008 PLAYERS on the Golf Channel today and he can really hit the ball well. If he putts decent I think he will contend. Maybe even if he doesn't: In 2008 he was dead last through 3 rounds in putting, yet still won. Scott because he has been playing a little better since the President's Cup and he won THE PLAYERS in 2004. Quiros because he kills the ball and always seems to do decent in Florida.

Sawgrass is a fairways-and-greens course; a player who wants to win there needs to keep the ball in play first and foremost. Hunter Mahan and Ryan Moore are the tour leaders this year in total driving, and both are within the top 50 in greens in regulation. Nick Watney and Adam Scott rank within the top 12 in each category. I'm looking at those four guys this week.

Word on Tiger Woods practice round today is that he hit 5 shots into the water, two cuts in a row for #1? maybe we'll see

Golf Channel quote :

" Woods said he’s making improvement this week.

“It’s getting better,” Woods said. “It couldn’t get any worse.”

But it sounded like it did in Tuesday’s practice round.

Woods didn’t inspire much belief that’s he ready to bounce back with a vengeance. In his practice round with J.J. Henry and Pat Perez. Woods hit five balls in the water, and he only played nine holes. In another practice round Monday, Jay Haas acknowledged that Woods struggled.

My vote is for Harrington. Have to vote for my favorite.

Would not mind at all if Furyk won. I expect a good showing for him. Would love to see McIlroy continue his awesome play last Sunday into this week's tournament. Would also love to see Couples do well and Mickelson in contention. Paul Casey, Lee Westwood, Tim Clark, Adam Scott and Mike Weir would be my other hopeful picks. Ha, tough to choose, but, for number one, I'll stick with Harrington.

Said on TGC tonight that Couples and Anthony Kim WD due to injury....

I think Phil is going to have the win this week, with good showings by Furyk, Poulter and Mahan.

C'mon Bubba

BUBBA!!! Great call - I'll be cheering my ass off for Bubba this week as well. I could be completely wrong, but I feel like Bubba plays at 120% every time he hits the course and he could benefit from a little better course management and subsequently simpler shot making decisions. But thats a whole different subject and something that belongs in his own thread ( I know there's one a few pages deep).

Sergio is another pick I thought about for a bit, but I just can't trust him. The man is a complete headcase. Yes, he does have a good track record here, something that should help him psychologically coming into this week, but it just seems like he's too down on himself to overcome that right now. If he gets off to a good start in the first round I could see him contending as he rides that familiar confidence he finds on this course. Otherwise, I see a cut made but no fireworks. I would say HOPEFULLY he can use this week as a boost to get him playing top-notch golf again, but I'm just not too big a fan. So if he does play well, good for him, but I won't necessarily be in his corner this week.

C'mon Bubba

I'd love to see Bubba do well, and as a North Florida native I bet Bubba wants to have a good showing, but Sawgrass isn't a course that plays to his strengths. There are too many holes where he'd run out of fairway to land his driver. That said, he does hit a surprisingly high number of greens in regulation (ranked 15th on Tour this year) and makes more putts than most (45th in putts per round), so if he can control his driving, he can't be counted out.

I can hear it now, Tiger, TIGER! gimme da club, now watch, no rinsing here you n0ob! lol

That's a good position right there, left arm bent a bit much perhaps. Hands deeper and not lifted, get Tiger on the same plane and he will dominate like never before.

I really like Poulter this week, he has one of the best putting and short games on tour and that will be key at Sawgrass. You cant count out Phil especially with him pushing for #1 but I dont think he will win. Over all though I think Poulter will pull off the win.

I've got my eyes on Mickelson for this one. He's on a good roll lately and I think if he plays as well as he has been, he'll take it. With that said, I agree with others, I'd like to see McIlroy play well again. The guy put on a hell of a game this past weekend!

As for Tiger...I'd like to see him out of his funk. Makes for a more entertaining watch :)

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.
    • Day 58 - 2024-11-27 Some quick 90-yard shots on a particular hole… before a lesson and testing out multiple Foresight Launch Monitors on GSPro.
    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
