Now that the first round of The Players Championship is looming, what's your favourite moment or memory from the famed 17th at Sawgrass?

My 2 favourites are Freddie's "Ace" when he put his tee shot in the water, nonchalently teed up his third shot, and put it in the hole... of course his real ace on the hole was pretty good to...

...and Tiger's "better than most" triple breaking 60 footer in the 2001 tournament which he went on to win

so many moments, what's yours?

Cheers, Allan

How about a least-favorite moment -- when that jackass jumped in the water before Jeff Sluman was about to putt in a playoff, late-1980s. Anyone else here old enough to remember that? Believe Sandy Lyle ended up beating him, but too lazy to look it up.

Favorite moment (warning, personal ego stroking ahead): When I stuffed an 8-iron to 8 feet, only time I played the course.

Yes, I missed the putt.

Freddie dunking it in the water then holing out for a par ;b

But the best was probably Tiger's putt, that was just amazing that he made that one.

How about the time a seagull grabbed a ball that landed safely on the green, flew off, and dropped his payload into the lake below?

Vaguely remember that, Chilli, but it's a hilarious image.

See a bit of everything on the 17th, don't we? Cheers, Sean

Lots of great moments mentioned above, but that hole is all about train wrecks... Len Mattiace, Sean O'Hair...

Gotta stop there before I start crying.

Philly baseball found the cure! Taser in the back for someone who runs on the the field of play. Freddy was pretty dang cool! I watched a replay last night and the fact he hit it straight into the hole was pretty dang cool to the point the hole had a pitch mark on it. Tiger's putt was also pretty dang cool. But I can't get by the fact that a hundred members have probably rolled that one in. LOL Just kidding.....

Saw the seagull on golf channel today was pretty funny. They also mentioned something golf digest did with the countries worst golfers in '85 and that guy shot 66 on 17 alone. Found the article and apparently he went through that without cursing or anything.

link to an article recalling it. http://www.golfdigest.com/magazine/2008-07/tarde

I was fortunate enough to play this course also. 137 yd and I hit it about 10 ft to the left of the flag and it never stopped. Right off the back. Second ball hit the green and landed on the walkway.

I like the train wrecks here. I can relate!!

that's horrible... I don't swear very much, but I think I might have said something there... a 66 on one hole??? that's only 1 lower than my best 18 hole round

I try to make myself be calm at golf, but 27 balls in the water I'd likely have people blushing. Though I would have gone for the putt down the path sooner just to end the humliation. I really can't fathom how from 50 yards out (drop zone) he wouldn't get lucky once out of those 26 other balls. Even with the screaming waist high short game they said he had you figure one would be short hit the front of the retaining wall a funny way maybe even the pin and land up there.

I hit two in the water then one putted for a 6.

    • Fantastic selection! And very little driving between them. Fingers crossed the weather is good to you.
    • Day 20: 2026.01.22 Hit about twenty balls at the range. Quietly pleased with how the changes are bedding in, surprsingly consistent ball flight. Hoping to film over the weekend to capture new movement.
    • You might also consider a tune-up lesson. Check and see if anything in your set-up or basic swing is holding you back. I have been playing for more than five decades, but on occasion I've had to make swing tweaks due to age, loss of flexibility, etc. You don't have to reinvent your swing. A couple of static set-up changes might really help out.
    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip.
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
