You're at sea level right? And you're including all your tee shots in this average - regardless of whether or not a driver was used?

I am not using anything other than driver except for par 3's for mine. I have been counting all my drives the last few rounds regardless of if they are in the fairway or not. Been hitting 10/14 fw's though.

I am about 700' above sea level here.

253 is a great average. That's just a few yards short of the shorter tour pros.

I expect it to go down when things soften up a little bit. I am using a 44.75" shaft in my driver now. Taking the inch off has given me less spin and more control as well.

I play at ~ 2800' and haven't played a round in weather warmer than 18 *C since last summer - I'd have to sift through scorecards to get a driver average.

I trust the guy in Pakistan's yardage claims - high altitude, warm(ish), possibly even humid. It all adds up.

He is only about 1700' above sea level there. Not like he is in Colorado or anything. Do you really think he is hitting that many fairways and that long with a regular flex shaft?

How stiff was Bobby Jones' driver shaft?

The stat I find odd is using the driver on 14 holes. That's either a really wide or really long course. Yesterday I used my driver 3 times. One okay, one bomb down the middle, and another even longer into the trees - shoulda only used it twice.

Was Bobby Jones a 12 handicapper?

He had great tempo for less stiff shafts. Henry Cotton wasn't a 12 either, but I'm just sayin', there's more to a handicap than hitting fairways.

True, but one would think if a player had that much control, he would/should be a much better hc.

Nope, just drivers. Hit the 3 wood more like 235 average, maybe a touch more.

Most people are shocked when they begin to measure their average distances, they're nowhere near as long as they thought. Even one 200 yard mishit drive will really drop your average fast. Very few people actually work out finding their average. I have a trusted launch monitor I use to verify my numbers, at the place I have my fitting done. The computer averages out distances, and gives me high and low numbers as well. My 6 iron, for example. The high distance was 208 yards, the low was 153 in a series of a few dozen swings. My average 6 iron is around 175. Just because I can hit it 208 doesn't mean my average is that long. My longest drives (no wind, average fairway, etc.) are 285-290 easy, but longest and average are not the same. I've hit my driver 326 yards, but that doesn't mean that's my average. I've also flubbed it 180 yards. All those numbers need to add up. Between the launch monitor verification, and GPS measurements on the course, I know what my average is, and I will not for a second begin to rationalize that it's longer than it is, because guys like Brian Gay and Brad Faxon, with their amazing swings, only average about 15 yards more. That's pretty damn amazing that I can nearly drive it as far as two of the best players in the world.

You're comparing one of the greatest players who ever lived, winner of the grand slam, to a 12 handicap? Are you insane? This is where these arguments get really thin. The average person just can't appreciate how good these players were. They're miles better than the average tour player, and the average tour player is miles better than the average mini tour player. The average mini tour player is miles better than the average scratch golfer, who is miles better than the average 12 handicap. To compare a 12 handicap to Bobby Jones really is hilarious.

I don't buy get the 246 average, even at sea level. I'd say your 255-265 estimate is more like it. Although, if you're only hitting a driver 2-6 times per round (my average) one bad drive and the average would definitely take a nosedive.

I was comparing a couple guys who could pound a golfball with a whippy shaft. Jones used a long shafted driver with small grip, iirc. Isn't that what this thread is about?

The two guys you mentioned could kick our asses using one club, so your reference to your driving average to that of Faxon and Gay isn't any more relevant than my reference to Bobby Jones. I'm not sure why your driving average is only 246 and his is allegedly 280. Who cares - you could probably still take his money.

Because I actually measure it. Everyone thinks they drive it longer than they do. When you actually sit down and take a calculator, and take every drive you hit for the round, then average them together, the result may shock you.

Here's an example of a driving average: 10 drivers hit in a round, here's the distances: 300 240 210 310 265 180 245 275 225 235 Average: 248.5 Even though there's several drives there at or over 300 yards, the average is still only 248. I would be willing to be this is far better than most of us drive the ball. When we are honest with ourselves, we become better players. Those of us who compare our stats to those of PGA tour pros are absolutely kidding ourselves. PGA tour pros are better than local club pros by more than a scratch golfer is better than a 20 handicap.

What is wrong with comparing two people? He is not saying they are the same, just that they have something in common. When you compare two things, you are looking for similarities and differences, not saying the two things are equal.
