I have always hovered between 10 and 11 clubs in my bag. My friends say I'm crazy not to carry the legal limit of 14. I just tell them that I cant handle the 11 I have now.

My current inventory:

TM 9.5 Burner driver (some times substituted with a 13 dgree metal)
Cobra 20 degree Hybrid
4-PW Tourney irons
Vokey 11 degree SW
Ping Zing 50th anniversary putter ( some times a Ray Cook blade putter)

I play 14 right now. After reshafting my hybrid with a aldila nv 95-x, it's filling the role that used to cover my 3 wood off the tee as well, I can pretty accurately play this club to about 250 off of the tee and anything over 220 from the fairway. I still play my 3 and 4 irons, which alot of guys swap out for hybrids. Carrying 3 wedges helps my scoring around the green.

No, you'd be crazy to carry any club that doesn't help you on the course, whether it's the fourteenth or the sixth. There's a player on this board of about your handicap level (who I view as the one who puts the most good thought into equipment and rules of any amateur on the board), and I'm pretty sure he carries twelve.

On the other hand, since you have your 11 clubs, you could, for example, put the 13 degree metal in with the driver for 12. Then you can "substitute" it mid-round if you feel like it, or use the driver during a round in which you might have substituted it but didn't need to do so. When you want to try a new club, you can put it in the bag without exceeding the legal limit. Obviously, you will have tried it on the range first, but now you can see how it works on the course. And if you don't like it, you haven't removed a club you might end up needing that round for it. I was carrying 13 until a few weeks ago; when I wanted to try a new (to me) driver, it was the 14th. When I decided I liked it better than the old one, I took the old one out and was back to 13. Now I'm trying a 60°. Plus, plenty of folks - some on this very board! - have played to their handicap in 5- or 7-club events. If you really want to fill up to 14, go find some $5 old demo clubs - pick ones you know you can't hit. Blade 1-irons or something. Put them in the bag just for the sake of having fourteen clubs. Or ask your friends for random old clubs of theirs to fill up the bag.

One thing I envy about guys who ride is the ability to carry all the clubs they want in a really huge cart bag. If I ever go the route of using a push cart I'll definitely get a cart bag and consider adding more clubs. The 14 club limit really only applies to tournament rounds. If you're playing a handicap round you can still carry the clubs but decide beforehand which clubs you'll be using and limit yourself to those.

Until recently, I only had 10 or 11. Just added a 3W and a couple wedges, but I've still not decided whether I'll actually keep them around. I certainly don't feel the need to use the clubs just because they're there. If you own 14 or fewer, I'd say just throw 'em in in case you feel the urge to use one. If more than that, then I'd suggest not feeling married to a particular setup.

If you're playing seriously, though, I'd consider only putting in clubs you objectively want to use. If you can't hit your 3W, then take it out so you don't get a jolt of testosterone and do something stupid when choosing clubs. But for recreational rounds, I think it's healthy to occasionally try that shot you really shouldn't.

I used to play with 11 clubs when I started but now have 14. I don't see why I should give myself the chance of shooting the lowest score which I know I can do because I have a club that will help me in whatever situation I find myself in.

Today - 15. I noticed an extra 3-iron in my 5-wood slot - on the back nine. Oh well.

Typically 14 - I like a lof of options off the tee, so I struggle to find the right wedge combo. Right now I go from the 9-iron, gap wedge, 56, 60.

I carry 14 and swap wedges for hybrids or fairway woods depending on where I'm playing or how I'm hitting them. I used to go with 9 when I was carrying my bag, but have since gone to a push cart so I load it up.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
