I just ordered myself and my wife a set of Callaways. While shopping through some pre-owned clubs, they read, very well cared for or something along that line. Everyone knows clubs aren't cheap if you get a decent set. I am fixing to retire my entry level set and really didn't do anything with them except for lightly brushing the dirt off and wiping any moisture from them before returning them to the bag to head for the next tee box.

How should I "care" for my new clubs to keep them looking and performing well for years to come?

My mother in law a keen golfer went into the pro shop to ask for new grips, and was asked had she "washed them". He then showed her how to wash the grips with soapy water and a gentle nail brush.

She was surprized by this as was my hubby who'd never heard of it either

i wash them after every shot then after the round. i use a soft bristle brush because the wire bristle one wears down on the grooves. every week or so i sharpen the grooves with a normal groove tool and i always wet the clubs down before i wash them. washing the grips off is a good idea but never let water get under the grips because theyl get lose and if you do wash the grips dont put them back into your bag until there all dried out. i wouldn't do this too often because it definitely can wear out your grips.

After a nice round (or during sometimes) I clean the dirt out of my clubs with a groove brush. Later when I get back home, I wipe them with a wet napkin, then dry with my towel.

How do you wash them after every shot?

I take my clubs out to see a movie and then to a fancy place for dinner. Afterwards we go for walks on the beach and stare up at the stars.

Yeah. I hit a shot and put them back in the bag, unless they are really muddy or the face has a bunch of dirt on it. I might wash them once a month.

No kidding... this is the oddest thread I've seen in a long time. Seriously, who has a regimen for taking care of their clubs while they play let alone at home after a round? Next post will be, "I just bought a new pair of shoes and want to keep them clean. How do you clean your shoes?"

Sorry OP, we have to have some common sense here.

After every round I just pour some water in a bucket, then dip the clubhead into the water. Then use a nylon brush to clean off the head and grooves. for stubborn stains I lightly use a wire brush. My first set of clubs I had I played for about 15 years and they still look pretty new. Other than the paint wore off from the grooves some.

I never wash the grips.

My clubs always get cleaned with soap & water then dried, after each round or range session , When I'm on the course they get checked for dirt, grass, mud, etc.. etc.. in the grooves then wiped off as needed after each shot

OP, This system will help keep them "looking and performing well for years to come", or if your like me, until a new set comes out, lol

I try to wipe my club faces off after every shot and I have a nylon brush attached to my bag if it's really bad. I pulled all the wire bristles out of the brush because you should NEVER use a wire brush on your clubs. After the round I rinse off the clubs and use a soft tooth brush to clean the clubs.

I've got plenty of common sense. I would even go so far as to say that I'd compare mind to yours any day, but when someone has never had a real nice set of clubs, and after reading that "these clubs have been well maintained", then I have to ask what is meant by "well maintained" and how would someone that "really knows an answer" maintain them. If you can't offer anything better than that, then thanks for nothing. Then sometimes, some of us have to make some of you feel better by asking easier questions since the harder questions are likely to stump you on any given day.... then you wouldn't feel very important. So, take advantage of questions that seem to be an easy every once in a while. All questions won't seem so trivial.

Now, how much do you know about accounting? Tax preparation? Auto body work or auto detailing? Mountain climbing, including being an expert on M/C gear? What about OHV wheeling? What about being an expert regarding telecommunications? Okay... my point is... for the ones that have been doing any of those for quite some time, it's seems very trivial and common sensical, and if someone, let's just use you for example, asked them how to do any of those, they might just flippantly answer that if you have common sense, it’s easy and that you should ask something that makes answering a little more challenging. Just as a question regarding "maintaining" a nice set of golf clubs. I paid $250.00 for the introductory set I bought before recently ordering the Callaway clubs, and my idea of maintaining them was to occasionally wipe the wet grass clippings off of them and throw them back in the bag, just as one or two of the answers on this thread have been. Most of the answers I've gotten for anything I've asked since being on the forum for this short time, have been helpful, but there are always a few that want to show their arse and you, sir, seem to be one that feels like showing it off a bit today. You should be thanking me for making you feel so intelligent. If I had not thought that the question was a legitimate one, I wouldn't have wasted my time on it, and certainly not anyone else's, but then, if it was such a ridiculous question, why did you bother with any kind of comment? What level did that put you on? Now, for the ones that gave realistic answers... I greatly appreciate it. I really didn't know if you used some type of protective lubricant on them periodically, maybe polish the SS shafts, wax the graphite shafts once or twice a year, etc. Thanks again.

Try washing grips with rubbing alcohol. NEVER use soap and water. The alcohol does a great job of removing sweat and dirt, and dries quickly. My grips stay tacky the entire round after. Soap seems to hasten the breakdown of the grip.

I give mine a spit and wipe with a towel after a shot if they have grass or dirt on them. About once a week I give them a rub down with a damp rag, but that's about it...

I do. I wipe them with a damp towel, clean the grooves with a brass bristle wire brush (one of those 2 sided brushes with plastic bristles on one side and brass on the other), then wipe them dry. I don't have a home regimen because I don't really need one. I keep them clean as I go. I clean the grips when they start to lose that tacky feel, but that's only necessary a couple of times a year for me. I don't wax and polish the heads and shafts like some tales I've read on golf forums.

That is just too anal.

This works for winn grips (polymer), for golf pride grips (rubber) and Lamkin grips (also rubber) use mild soap and water

I always clean my clubs during the round after shots. I try to wipe them clean with my towel or brush the grooves out with my golf brush. I always bring them in and wash them after I hit up the range or course. I just enjoy spending the time keeping them clean!!

    • Very respectfully, I disagree.  I still believe there’s a small kernel of truth to my theory.  Hey, you, iacas and many others here are extremely knowledgeable, know the game inside out, know the tour inside out.  I’m just a schmuck who posted a take, admittedly unsupported and not up to reasonable high standards. There’s a background to my take - I’ll attempt to briefly describe it.  Back when Rory first came on tour, I thought he was great - most folks did, his talent was undeniable, and his youthful happy go lucky looking demeanor made him even more likable.  And he won early, fast - at the highest levels. And then the physical workouts started.  That was cool, man he’s looking good.  And as it went along, was even a bit shocking.  But all was still good in the Rory fan club. But as a few years rolled along and the majors stopped, folks like me started to question the effect of the physical build up.  (raising my hand here - - folks like me were probably concentrating 95% on the majors record, and failing to acknowledge his stellar play overall) The matches with Patrick Reed...  Somewhere around that time, Patrick became “the most hated man on tour”.  Raising my hand again, not sure if that timing is accurate, or even if that moniker was deserved.  But when Rory got into the screaming flex-off, it definitely detracted from the earlier Rory likability.  It’s kinda like he was lowering himself to Patrick’s level.  Not so great, for me at least. As the mid 2010s rolled along, and the majors drought continued, and the near misses at the Masters happened, the dreaded ‘choke’ perception inevitably raised its head and persisted.  I joined in with the chorus, not disliking Rory, but certainly questioning his ability to close the Masters or any other major.  Rightfully or wrongly, it was there. Then LIV came along.  As that developed, I saw the anti-LIV sentiment develop along with it, and I took offense to it.  My thought - these guys are being offered life changing $$, and the anti-LIV folks are trying to stop them from getting it. And then when Rory rose to ‘lead’ the anti-LIV sector, that really rubbed me the wrong way.  The press conferences, the parking lot shouting match - it just all seemed really distasteful to me.  And it seemed far far away from the early Rory, who I really liked. So all that (in my own mind) led me down the “Rory will never win.. yada yada”.  Not based on any real statistical analysis.  Not taking into account the incredible stats and winning record he had amassed. Purely based on perception and cultural silliness.  AND - the physical thing, which as I mentioned, I think there’s a tiny kernel of merit there. So - fast forward to Rory’s post win press conference.  THAT was the old Rory I remembered!  The totally cool guy, humble, forthright, honest, self deprecating.  He’s probably been like that all along.  And he’s certainly backed off the hard core anti-LIV persona, at least in public. That’s it.  Just a stupid unsupported take from a dumbsh*t golf fan.  For me, this was the most exciting major since the Tiger era. I really thought it would be a gladiator death match between Rory and Bryson.  I’m surprised that Bryson fell off - - I thought he was well-set-up to handle the pressure.  I’m sure he’ll be there many times in the future, along with Rory.
    • I've been watching golf for 35 years and I've seen my fair share of exciting events, but I cannot recall ever watching so much up and down in the fortunes of one player in one round of golf. How good the good shots were and how bad the bad shots were and how he was leading, then not, then leading again, then way clear, then tied, then behind, then leading, then in a playoff, then winning. Heck I aged just watching it on the TV - Rory must have gone through some stuff out there. Just incredible. Consider that Rory had two double bogeys, three bogeys, six birdies, and Rose made only 4 pars, 4 bogeys, and 10 birdies. 10! Round that place? Mind officially blown.
    • Yea it doesn’t suck. I didn’t score well but most of it came down to short game and putting. I had 3 holes I can directly blame bad long game shots on. I’m just trying to hedge my bets. If I don’t make it as a professional golfer, I could be a fitness model as a backup plan.
