when i hit with an iron (especially with a wedge-9 iron) my ball trajectory is very high. I dont know why this is because i am hitting down on the ball.

i see people who with a wedge will have trajectory that i get with my 7-8 iron.

why is this?

how can i work on this to get it down?

Are you playing the ball in the middle of your stance? How wide is your stance? Do you lean the shaft forward at all at address?

A swing video face on and down the line would tell us alot.

u do know that hitting down on the ball with the iron will add loft to th shot.

I hit the ball pretty high.

Exactly. Hitting down on the ball doesn't add loft if done properly. However, if you flip or scoop at impact where the clubhead passes the hands, then you've added loft to that club.

I have the same issue, although I don't see it as a problem. Rarely does a golf game go by when someone doesn't comment about how they wish they could hit the ball higher. I have been told many times that as long as you can hit the ball a little lower if necessary, and not losing any distance, there really isn't a problem. I have good distance with my irons. Sometimes I wish I was a little lower flight and a little more distance, but I can live with it. I hit the ball hard enough, the wind isn't much of an issue either.

Just curious, my answers would be yes, pretty wide, a little. What does that mean?

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

Trajectory depends on lots of things.

- Club loft
- Shaft
- Club head design
- Ball
- Angle of shaft at impact
- Ball position
- Ball striking
- Where the bottom of the swing is

Forward leaning shaft is a requirement for better ball striking. By using video analysis, preferably with some FPS, you can see the position of the shaft at impact and determine if it is too far back.

He posted his swing before. Here it is.

Hard to see well at that speed but I think you're flipping a bit through impact.

Club Loft, big time

Shaft, stiffer will produce a lower trajectory especially if the tip is stiffer Club head, lower COG will increase trajectory Ball, higher spin will produce higher trajectory Angle of shaft at impact, will increase or decrease club loft, they are linked together. Flipping will add loft because club head will be ahead of the hands. Ball position, more forward will lead to a higher trajectory, but that depends on the swing. This one has little effect depending on the swing.

I changed clubs last year and I hit the ball much higher with my current set. It has a huge influence. I went from Mizuno MP60s wiht DG300 S shafts to my Titleist 775s with the nippon steel stiff that are about 25 grams less. It made a huge difference for me. I gained almost a club and hit every club through the set higher and farther.

And the funny thing is the lofts on my new irons are 2 degrees less so you would think it would be a lower trajectory but it isn't at all.

To the original poster- looks like a bit of "flipping" through impact.

Get yourself an impact bag (seriously, do it) and work on improving your impact position. You can likely add yards, increase consistency and bring your shot down by getting a firm left hand that is leading the club through impact and increasing the amount of weight that your transfer onto your left foot.

Your swing doesn't look too bad but it does appear to be better suited to the driver. I froze your video at impact and your hands are slightly behind the ball where they should be well in front for a short iron. You need to transfer your weight forward earlier in your swing. Don't be afraid to really hit down and take some dirt with you. Also, you must feel yourself accelerate through the ball. When you stop accelerating the clubhead will catch up to your hands very quickly and hitting down becomes impossible.

Here's a pic of your impact position, I wouldn't quite call it a flip, but I wouldn't call it a good impact position either. Your hands are not leading the shaft at all.

Other than that, your impact position is quite solid.

Agreed. If the OP can get more weight (~85%) onto his left side at impact and lead with the back of his left wrist, he'd improve this.

thanks a lot guys i also went to an instructor today for the first time ever and we really worked on my takeaway because i have a bad habit of taking the club to the inside too much leading to my iron slice and shank.

so ill work on that and better impact position. cuz i do hit down on the ball it just sounds liek not enough

thanks

Two things.

1. "Too high" would mean hitting the ball more than about 100 feet in the air with the longest clubs in the bag.

2. Yes, you're adding well too much loft to the club. Hands are nearly on top of the ball at impact. Take a look at two average tour players' impact positions. Their hands are well in front of the ball at impact.

Aaron Baddely:

And you:

You see the difference? You need to really get the hands ahead of the ball at impact, and lag the club. You want to club to cross your hands about waist high on the followthrough, not at the bottom of the swing.

He posted his swing before. Here it is.

if you pause at 0:06 you can see at impact his clubshaft is barely leaning forward and the angle of attack isn't that steep. your right maybe a little bit
