This happened this weekend at a course here in Utah.

Anybody else seen or been involved in a argument that turned out like this?

Not quite, but ive been close a couple of times. Just a quick flex of my biceps is enough to difuse the situation.

I usually take my shirt off and situation difused.

on a serious note, this is pretty damn ridiculous that they had to escalate it into physical violence. Though the two who took it physical are in the wrong, I'm sure the guy who was hospitalized wasn't trying to diffuse the situation either.

I came close once when a clown decided to hit into my group, but he thought better of it. At my old home course in Louisiana, we had folks get arrested for similar incidents, with one guy going back to the parking lot to get his handgun... Fortunately, no one was killed. -LBB

In one town in Oklahoma, I occasionally played the public course. One day a tournament with about 10 foursomes was teeing off on No. 1. So, Bob the starter tells me and another single to go off No. 10. We tee off and play shots out of the left rough. As soon as my approach is airborne, a drive come near me. Another group is teeing off into us.

We both get up and down for pars, and go onto No. 11. At 11 tee, a Big Guy from the following group comes over and demands to know, "Where the H... did you guys come from?"

I said, "From No. 10 tee!" He got all snarly. I said Bob gave us permission, and Big Guy says Bob doesn't have that authority and we can't just cut in. Having had trouble before with area golfers, I was furious.

He comes closer and crowds me, and it turns out he's one of the area football coaches with a big surgical scar on his right knee. I cautioned him that a well-placed sweep kick could take his knee out. He backed off, said I hadn't heard the last of this.

No. 11 was a water hole - me and the other guy make quick bogies and go on. Big Guy and his group dump multiple balls into the water, and end having to let the following group go through. So sweet!

Focus, connect and follow through!

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

I was about to roll on this one guy a few weeks ago but he flashed his biceps quick and I decided to back off...

No, I've never seen it actually escalate to physical violence. I've yelled back at people who hit into us, and even started walking back to a guy, club in hand, when their group caught up to us on the 17th tee after he hit into us 3 separate times when I was like 18. I was corralled by someone I was with, which was for the best because the guy had a solid 90 pounds on me so I was definitely going in swingin. But it was still pretty damn stupid.

At this point I can't possibly imagine what it would take to get me to that point on the course again. I don't think anything ever would. I have 1/4 the temper I used to but 3 times the tongue, so I feel like I would be more likely to get punched after I made an off the wall comment to someone on the course who pissed me off.

Some people really take the game seriously evidently.

It didn't get this far. About 20 years ago, I had barely begun playing when on a downhill par 3, taking extra club as a beginner is taught to do I pulled my shot, incredibly I caught it dead solid perfect. It whistled over the head of a guy nearly to the tee of the following hole and finished ob in an adjacent cemetary. This guy felt I did it on purpose, or didn't yell fore loud enough? who knows. He pulled a club and started back up the hill at me, swearing a blue steak the whole way. I doubt my flabby body, I had two kids under 3 and was working full time and going to school full time for an advanced degree and was in awful shape at the time scared him. My playing partner pulled a club of his own and motioned for the guy to keep coming. At that point enough sanity returned for him to realize it was two to one and if I pulled a club he would be outgunned and he backed off. If was a Friday night league and serious drinking may have been involved on his part.

Never been involved in anything that got ugly.

Got hit with a ball once & walked back to the offending party to make a point, but not a big deal. & i made sure that i was unarmed. The last thing you want is two guys swinging drivers at each other.

Actually, i have a 1iron that would probably be pretty evil in a fight. I've finally found a use for it;)

I play at my work course probably about 90% of the time & usually i'm the first one off, sometimes solo sometimes not, or i play twilight. So generally i don't have issues with being on massively crowded courses. I'm not sure i'd continue playing if i lived in some large urban area where it was all sandwiched together like that. 5 hour rounds & stressing out about the group behind me, no thanks.

sadly i've been pretty close, with some words said, but never any violence.

I've never been close to fisticuffs. I have made respectful comments to a group or two that have hit into myself or partners.
It's a shame for those folks involved. Someone is going to prison for a long time. Cooler heads should have prevailed.

I imagine that something like this is what happened in the story the OP posted. Course regulars are probably the worst when it comes to something like this. They feel they own the course and they have their set tee times and when someone cuts in front of them (even with permission), or doesn't play fast enough, it can get ugly. And I know for a fact that a lot of those older guys, usually retired military or police are armed. If they don't have a gun in their bag you know they've got something in their car and those are the types that are capable of just about anything if they get backed up against a wall. I try to always keep that in mind when dealing with an angry or rude regular who feels I've (or someone I'm with) has done something to step on their toes. Leagues can be bad about this too. They've been playing the course forever and when it's their time to go you'd better get out of their way. Munis are probably more prone to this kind of behavior because private clubs are much more controlled by course staff. A marshall on the course can nip this in the bud, but sometimes the marshalls are just as bad as the rude regulars.

i hear ya...sh*t gets outta control, shirt comes off, bicpes gets flexed and let them know I know "REX-KWON-DO" and it send dudes runnin........ really it does

hahaha! ok, it doesnt never had things get physical like this story craziness
"My swing is homemade - but I have perfect flaws!" - Me

I witnessed a fistfight in a parking lot of a country club once. apparently one of the two people involved hit into the other, and then met in the parking lot...rear-ending each other. I heard, 'Oh, you again F*cker?...' and then both drivers got out only to get in what one would call a greco-roman type bout, ending on the ground with people pulling them off each other. i've never seen such mean argyle vested guys goin at it.

Beware the Argyle vested ones .... 8-)

Anyway, a few years back I read a news report of a shooting on a course, a decade or more ago I read of a couple arguments on a course that ended in a knife fight. I've seen nearby groups on adjacent fairways get into a couple shoving matches. Not worth the consequences in any of those cases.

I think I'd try to just quietly wander over to my bag and start digging around in the sweater pocket. I think I'm also going to program into my phone the starter's office number for any course I play should anyone take offense to my starting on the 10th when walking on solo. A quick call with the speaker activated should calm any issues (hopefully).

    • Day 21 - Good session with driver and 6i. Hitting real golf balls is quite a bit different from the foam balls, still getting used to that change.
    • There are so many videos comparing and contrasting everything that I am both overwhelmed and more than a bit skeptical. Your comments above are much more valuable than hours of you-tube videos. Generally speaking, I’d much prefer to read something that someone took the time and trouble to write (such as your comments) than a bunch of videos, or worse, meaningless reviews that seem like they are all cut and paste selections of the same script. I’m more of a RTFM type than a watcher of “instructional” videos. By way of explanation, I don’t watch TV either.  So thanks - I’ll take that under advisement. I have an H3 that I bought for $10 that I’ve been carrying around but not sure why. Seems like a cool club, but I just don’t really know what to do with it.
    • I was using the window as a mirror. Just trying to be a more aware of the feels for a better backswing. Trying to not be as closed from A1 to A2. Then not letting the club head flip inside. What I was feeling was a pressure my right wrist, and like the palm of my right hand was pushing upward against the grip of the club. My right hand was the underside of the swing path.  Going to play around with this a bit more. It looked pretty decent with mirror/window work. Just wanted to jot it down.
    • Day 4: 3/26/25 Par4Success workout followed by putting through 50 mm gates.
    • Day 249: did a stack putting session and then worked on 5 foot putts for a bit.
