For those of you who have tried the 3 ft putting drill with 10 balls, what is the most that you have made in a row? I always thought Mickelsons goal of 100 in a row was crazy until I just rattled of 63, which blew my previous high of 25 away. That drill has really helped my putting game!!!

I need to re-grip my putter and work on this. My putting is terrible as of late. shot an 85 yesterday with 36 damn putts. I average 33.7 right now.

My best is 32 from three feet. I need to get back to that drill this summer. I haven't really been missing that many short ones, but I love the confidence it brings in.

It really will help you with the 3-5 footers. I work right next to a course and do this drill 4 days a week during my lunch break.

I'll try it next time I get to the practice green.

I'd say I'd make 8-10 in a row maybe less. Those 3 footers get longer when you get nearer to your last record

My usual goal is 30 four-footers. I figure if I can do that, my stroke is in good shape.

I would love to push that out to five or six feet, but I don't have the patience or consistency for it.

Been doing this drill now at least once a week and up until today my best was 63 without a miss. This afternoon I finally rattled off 100 in a row without a miss. The last ten seemed like 10 footers!! Great drill!!

That's a great drill too! Take 10 balls and try to chip them into a 3 foot circle. Keep doing it until you score 8 points out of 10 balls. 1 pt inside circle and 2 pts in the cup.

It is a great drill but I wonder if you're doing the drill right. I was taught to do it around a hole with a significant slant. Otherwise, you might as well not circle the hole as each putt is the same. On a slant you now get uphill/downhill and sidehill (breaking both ways) putts. The way the pro taught me was to take five balls and surround the hole and then after making all five you back the balls up a foot and repeat. So, if you've made 15 putts you're now moving to six footers. Good luck with that one getting to 25 let alone 100.

I can see both drills being effective. Putting from the same spot will isolate directional accuracy, while moving around on a slant will add reading the break to the equation.

It's a great drill when you're starting to practice your putting. Once I could make 25 in a row, I moved out to 5 feet and tried to make 100 in a row. If I miss, I have to start over. I do this once a week, really helps with the stroke.

That's a different drill, and there are many variations of it. You shouldn't work on your stroke on anything but a flat put. You need the proper feedback that you can only get from a flat lie and flat putting path.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great drill, and a necessary one... just not for working on your stroke.

Cheers, Allan

The hole that I used does have a slant to it, so about half of the balls have break to them.

A great drill. I once heard an ex-college golfer tell me that his coach made every one of his players putt 3 footers until they could make 100 in a row. Now in his late fifties (just a guess) that same golfer is a very reliable short putter -- confident and certain he will make them, and that is a big part of actually making short putts.

    • I've got two of them.  So for me it depends. If I'm playing with friends and they know me. I'm taking the hole-in-one. Because they know my game anyway. Let's go for the awesome moment/bragging rights.  If I'm in a tournament I'm taking the low round, because I want to win.  If I'm playing with a bunch of strangers, and I just show up, and get paired up. I'm leaning toward taking the low round. I could leave them thinking I'm better than I am. Plus for me that would be a 73. ... That would be cool.
    • Hole in one is a lifetime achievement, so that.
    • Would You Rather #68: Would you rather make a hole-in-one on a perfectly struck shot, during a round where you otherwise played pretty poorly.  or  Would you rather play well all day and beat your personal best by let's say 3 strokes, but with no eagles.  BTW - You could answer that it may depend upon who you are playing with? ... Or if its in a tournament? ... Or any other conditions you want to apply to the question.
    • Good idea. Good luck with the new weapons. Let us know how you get on. 👍
