Looks absolutely ridiculous.

Thats the problem in golf, and other areas of life. Whenever you go outside the norm, in the eye of a spectator that kind of putting looks "wired", now maybe that kind of putting is better than the norm - maybe its not. But how will we ever find out when the first thing we do is critzicing instead of analysing? And most people just cant stand the heat and will revert back to what they did before. So any kind of ideas/advanced concepts for the game of golf just disappear with it, and that is sad...

I´m sure Choi put some thoughts into that regarding his mechanics before taking this route.

I don't think it looks ridiculous and if it works for short-medium putts, stay with it. On long range putts I'm not so sure about the method.

exactly.

If I could putt like that using that technique I wouldn't care what anybody said about it.

Perhaps it makes me shallow, but I would not be comfortable using a very odd technique like this, even if it really worked.

Similarly, I played years ago with a guy who used a "Killer Bee" 49" driver with a black and gold striped shaft. He hit it a mile, but it looked absolutely absurd so that everyone who saw it made some smart-ass comment. It also protruded about a foot out of his golf bag ensuring that all of the club attendants were sure to see it and comment too.

There some aspects are tradition that I wish people would not muck with IMHO. Once again it is not the arrow it is the indian. What if he decides to turn the putter around and hold the mallet end of the putter and chalk up the shaft and hit it like a pool cue. I personally just don't care for bending the rules around to get wacky putting styles. Just as you are ok with it I don't care for it.

I saw a fellow putt like that at the practice green once, but he stood more upright and held the end of the grip against his body almost like a belly putter.

Except he did it because he only had one hand. Dude was still a decent putter.

The rules of golf don't let you use the shaft or grip of the club to hit. I don't think you have to fear him using something other than the clubhead to strike the ball.

My view is simple: Use the heads of a set of clubs to move the ball from start to finish. Go for whatever works for you. I'm kind of curious to try that style out just for fun, but my putter isn't built for that. Center-shafted and face-balanced is definitely the way to go.

  • 2 weeks later...
Watching the Scandinavian Masters, which he's currently leading, Choi seems to have given up on the side saddle technique for now. He's back to putting badly the conventional way while hitting his irons like God.

That is very strange, I mean all the diferent ones currently on tour with left hand low, claw, hands together, reverse claw etc, at least these all put sideways, standing head on looks very odd IMHO.

But hey if it works for him then good luck to him, I mean he uses Ping G15's as well, so clearly does not give a shit as long as the end result works and I take my hat off to him for that

    • Day 297: putted for about 25 minutes, working on 30 foot putts. Then went and hit balls for about an hour, just focused on getting the ball to go where I want it. Not my best session, but figured it out better at the end.
    • I do use a 7 wood. Love it! Do have a specific question about 7 woods?
    • @DrizZzY does. 😄
    • does anybody still use a 7 wood? if not what do you use instead>
    • Day (2 May 24) - somehow I missed posting both Tues and Weds practice sessions - so the streak ends and a new one begins…. Focus today was on ball first contact using the Divot Board for reference.   Worked with 7i, 9i and GW hitting hard foam balls.  Started hap hazardly and then settled back into my pre-shot setup.  Much more consistent in the latter.
