Well, there goes Phil's chance to be #1 this week.

I don't know what it is about him, but he is always a train wreck waiting to happen.

How does he fair historically at the British Open? I haven't followed golf long enough to remember.

Anyway, didn't he miss the cut before winning the Masters this year?

He missed the cut 3 times, came 3rd once, one top 10, the rest 30-60th, he did do well in the scottish open once but the weather was unusually nice, he aint a wind player but that short game helps in the open

His record in the Open is terrible. Personally, I don't think he is a links course player.

I seriously doubt he'll even content next week if the weather isn't perfect.

If he could have turned that 9 into a par he wouldn't have been in such bad shape today!

it wasnt really bad play that caused the 9 so it wasnt that he cant play when the weather is poor, it was only a 9 due to him not announcing the ball as a provisional, and without it he'd be in decent shape

Ok not including the 9 he would still be more than ten shots off the lead, thats not good enough for a player of his calibre, and he never performs in adverse condition

after winning the JP McManus pro-am Darren Clarke goes into the lead.
I wouldn't be surprised if he runs away with this.

something we rarely see from phil is lack of desire. On this day I see some things that dont sound like Phil... He either was real frustrated and wanted to get out of the Scottish open ASAP or truly just didnt care on his hole where he carded a 9.

He hit his 2nd shot where he thought was in the hazard. He later found out he couldve played the second shot but because he hit a 3rd shot that wasnt declared a provisional he could not hit his original 2nd shot. His excuse was... when asked why he didnt check for the ball

"I didn't want to walk 300 yards up and 300 yards back."

coming from a guy who at memorial walked like a half a mile to hit a shot off of a cart path it seems unusal. I like Phil so im not attacking him but it seems like a dumb comment .

If tiger makes the comment its a headline.

- BTW seems like he MC by 1 stroke

Who cares about walking, why didn't he just declare the third a provisional?

He might have been too lazy walking those 300y, but he also seems a bit lazy playing more events and seal the deal for #1 - it kind of confused me, why he didnt play the AT&T; and go head to head with Tiger, and the only reason he playes the Scotland event regullary before the Open is cuz its his Sponsors event. Otherwise he probably would do some "Chillout-Event" like Tiger does to "prepare" himself.

And probably after the British Open he "rests" again for a couple of weeks.

Phil, get your lazy butt up and get it done - Tiger isnt getting divorced forever.... Just imagine, what it will do for his game, when he is offically single and he can screw everything that moves - SCARY...

Provisional applies to lost ball or out-of-bounds ; if you think it's in the hazard, I don't think you can hit a provisional.

in a preparation tournament before a major him easily making the cut (which would have happened by at least 3 if not 4 shots had he not made the mistake) then yes id call that pretty good shape

Francesco will win it now imo

You can't play a provisional if you think a ball has gone into a hazard, only if you think it is lost in bounds or out of bounds. So if he thought it was in a hazard and playable he would have to walk up and see the lie. Then if it was not playable walk back to the tee box. Obviously he wasn't too worried with how he finished in the tournament reading between the lines.

    • Day 132: 5/7/24 Full Speed Spectrum Training session 8/24. 7th training program overall.    Another slow session but 4 mph faster than my last session, which was my slowest ever. Going to the doctor on Friday to check on pulled neck muscle.
    • Day 26: Did full swing practice after work. First 15 balls were working on top of the backswing feel, and then tried to incorporate transition feel into the next 15 balls. A's, although this will be my last season of being a fan as they leave for Las Vegas (by way of Sacramento for a few seasons). Hard to see myself rooting for the Giants, but if that's the only MLB in the Bay Area, I guess I might get on board.
    • My two cents? Don't. As a beginner that's interested in learning about the golf swing, you'll find yourself consuming a lot of information, most of which isn't even relevant to your own swing. You need to learn you can't think your way to a good golf swing. Focus on the one thing that you're working on and doing that on every swing, come what may. And remember, mishits happen.
    • Day 6 (7 May 24) - More work in the backyard focused on tempo in addition to setup.  Worked with 6 and 7 irons hitting hard foam balls - used the old MacGregor irons to mix it up a little.
    • No! lol. But they have to be in the right sequence to play mid-handicap golf or little better. Mostly. And even in that there is range/margin for error in the motions and positions that most normal humans can handle. It helps if you have a decent idea of how a golf club moves around the body like you would any other equipment sports (baseball and hockey might be the closest) After all, fairways are 40 yards wide. Don't overthink it. Be diligent in getting basics right. I will concede that it is harder than it sounds but it certainly is not exact angle/exact position/exact degree of bend/exact speed/exact facial expression, etc, every.... single.... time or the result is horrible death.
