You can hit a provisional anytime you want, you just have to declare it. However declaring a provisional for anything other than the first ball being possibly OB, Lost or in a water hazard doesn't make much sense since you have to play the first ball if you find it in bounds. One of the options for playing out of a water hazard to to replay the ball from the original position so depending upon circumstances a provisional can make perfect sense.

Actually, this isn't the case here.

http://www.usga.org/RulesFAQ/rules_a...asp?FAQidx=110 states (a) player may not play a provisional ball for the sole purpose of the original ball being in a water hazard. I don't know if the rule is the same under R&A; rules, but I'd be surprised if it were substantially different.

definitely man, i'm a big fan of both the molinari bro's. i think when it's all said and done they'll have at least 5 majors between them.

I guess you're right you can't hit a provisional ball because you think you're in a water hazard. I hadn't read that decision before. I guess we live and learn (hopefully). Sorry for the mis-information.

I just saw a player mark his ball on the fairway...pick it up...and place it back on the fairway. It must be legal. I've never seen this before. I'm assuming you can only do this on the greens or fairways over there. I'm pretty sure it's not legal over here.

I decided to look into this some more as I am sure I did hit a provisional ball in a tournament a few years ago because I couldn't tell for sure if I had carried the water hazard or not. I was not called on this and the foursome (except for me apparently) was knowledgeable golfers. Turns out I had carried the hazard so I ended up playing the original ball. But I wanted to know if there were exceptions to the rule or did I "cheat". Turns out in "The Rules of Golf", 2010-2011 edition, part B of Appendix 1 on Page 102, it is permitted for the local committee to allow a provisional ball when the golfer doesn't know if the original ball is in the water hazard or not. I am not sure that was my case or just I was ignorant and got away with it. But given the nature of the hole (a forced carry over the hazard on a dogleg so it isn't easy to tell sometimes if the ball carried the hazard) it would make sense to permit a provisional ball. Next time I'm at the course I am going to ask the Pro so I don't do this again unless it's permitted.

Clarke marked it because his and Francesco Molinari's ball were pretty much next to each other after their drives

You would have seen several people doing it. Pick, clean and place was allowed because the course was so wet after the rain over the last few days. There was another inch overnight, apparently. Definitely squidgy!

It's called " lift, clean and place" when weather conditions dictate it, like rain and muddy fairways, it's legal everywhere

What they said about the course and scoring James was that the winning score would have been around level par if the greens were firmer but they were very receptive and so scoring was low in the first few days. However the course played longer on the last day and that put paid to the scoring.

This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
