Ok, so I was reading on ESPN this morning that some of the writers there felt that the final round of the Open Championship was "a monstrous bore" . This seems like a very cynical view of golf, as golf is not supposed to be a neck and neck fight 100% of the time. Im not saying that it always isn't, but when the rounds are not always tight, people tend to say that golf has become "boring." What did you guys think of the final 18??? Congrats to Oosthuizen by the way

It was boring to the press and others because Tiger and Phil wasnt in the picture.

It was also great to watch a nobody stand up to the pressure. But then again..... I love underdogs.

I could give a shit if Tiger wins 20 majors..... or if Phil can win another. Golf isnt just about them.

At the end of the day, it was a fantastic performance by the winner.....and that is all you can ask for out of any major championship.

Contrats again L.O.

I enjoyed watching it but I can see what they mean. All 4 rounds were fairly consistent with Oosthuizen in the lead and no one else making any big plays.

But man...that Oosthuizen guy, what a swing! Mechanically near perfect in my opinion.

I think the "blowout" part of it just made for a less dramatic feel. Also no "BIG" names on the leaderboard or any late charges made it a very somber final round. As for watching the winner hit perfect shot after shot, now that was entertaining . The guy was on fire, fairway and GIR, fairway and GIR....now that was entertaining!

I don't have a problem with Louie winning, good on him. What bored me was the fact that he was never really challenged. It would have been nice if Casey could have at least pushed him to see how he handled the pressure.

I must admit, I fully expected him to pull a Garrigus!

Seems like everybody nowadays just expects a choke of the leader and is just waiting to get the trophy handed to him - LOL. If you want something, take it, dont wait til somebody decides to screw up and get it handed to you. Maybe a change in attitude towards this regard might help these guys...

Regarding the final round being boring - I´m sure if "some other dude" was a top of the leaderboard crushing the field, nobody wouldnt even dare to call it boring. Everybody would have raved about his "marvellous" eagle putt on the 9th and for the next few weeks we would see rerun after rerun of his victory. But since this "other dude" is a bit out of shape, it must have been boring to watch for many. GET USED TO IT!

Very true.. but remember the world is circular.

without big names, without press, there's less sponsorship, and less interest less interest = less sales = less R&D; into equipment = less advancement in the game People can hate Tiger.. but as a golfer, I know he's done more for the game just by being dominant, than anyone else has ever done. There are many nicer players, better persons, etc.. but no one as influential to the game of golf.. no one who's brought more youngesters into the game etc.

It was boring to the press and others because Tiger and Phil wasnt in the picture.

JWL1957 speaks the truth. ESPN loves loves loves Tiger (and Phil almost as much) and when Tiger isn't on the leaderboard, ESPN gives the PGA no respect. This is one of the reasons I root against Tiger (there are others including my inclination for pulling for the underdog). I really enjoyed the last round and found Louis Oo. to be endearing.

I thought it was the worst final round ever in terms of viewing. I don't care that it wasn't tiger and phil in the mix, but there just wasn't much going on. Not any moves by any of the final 10 groups, they just kind of went along. I also really thought st. andrews just wasn't that exciting without a big wind blowing. I know the prestige and it is the home of golf, but it really didn't make me think about it as being the greatest place to play golf. When I watch other tournements, I enjoy watching the golf but also like to look at the course and see the holes. There, it isn't anything but flat lies and hay if you get in trouble. Bump and runs/putting off the green isn't impressive to watch on tv. It doesn't show there skill other than how good they are at getting the speed right. I know it is really hard to get down in two putting up and over a mounds but I like seeing the pros playing shots where they have to do something that shows there skills. Also, there with the greens being so firm, they couldn't hit it super close even with the wedges because they have to guard against the bad miss and play for big bounces.

I know people are going to jump my back b/c I talked bad about the holy grail of golf but I thought one of the reasons so many didn't find this to be exciting is the course and not the players.

+1. What an awesome performance! What I enjoy most about watching golf tournaments is seeing how freaking good these guys can play. What a swing! You can't ask for a much more impressive display than what we got to see.

Handicap is a guess because I haven't established one yet.Best score so far is a 71 on a 6,509 yard 70.3/121 par 72 muni, during a glorious...

Tiger and Phil don't have to be winning for me to be interested. However, I don't expect much excitement when Casey is the biggest threat. Guys I am so sick of hearing about that never produce are him and Luke Donald.

I watch sports for excitement and this was the least exciting major I can recall. If I am watching my football team and they win 42-7 I am extremely board watching, this is the same way I feel about the tournament.

Louis played like a true champion Sunday and I was truly shocked at how mentally tough he played. The guy definitely has ice in his veins. Congrats to him, an easy guy to root for.

I've watched golf for alot more years than I've played it. As a new player I thought it was great that a relative no name could dominate the big guns the way he did. Seemed most people expect / hoped Louis would choke on Sunday, but he never did. Those that trailed tried to make things happen but it seemed to mostly backfire on them, especially Phil.

It seemed the tee off time played a much larger role in players performance and scores than usual. I realize that it could happen at any course but it seemed much more severe at St. Andrews with the wind. I can see why the press felt it was boring, they want tight scores with big name golfers at the top, and this had none of that.

It was boring because it was a blow-out, runaway win. I watched it, but felt that it was kind of boring. I found myself hoping the Louis would falter or someone would make a huge surge simply so that the finish would be closer and more interesting.

I wonder if the sports writers and commentators felt the same when Tiger blew away the field in 2000? I didn't follow golf then, but my guess it was touted as the greatest game of golf of all time.

I don't care if Tiger or Phil are in the lead, but it was a foregone conclusion he was going to win. I watched about 30 minutes of golf (watched for about an hour but was fast forwarding through much of it).

It was an incredibly boring tournament. There was no excitement. The guy played good golf but good golf is often boring... so be it.

That's true. I don't recall where, maybe on here, but I read about someone who played a round with a pro on a normal course. He said it was neat, but ultimately dead boring. The guy just hit it in the fairway, hit it on the green, and then put it away. Over and over. Yep, it's amazing that they can do it, but you need some trouble recoveries or just *something* to make it exciting.

I'm glad for Oosthuizen and I think he played a great tournament, but there just wasn't anything compelling to watch on Sunday. No, not every tournament needs heavy drama, but it is more fun to watch if it's present.
