I Can't Decide Whether to Build a Computer or Golf Clubs...

Well recently I was given a partly working computer from a family friend, and I'm having alot of fun building another computer. However, I'm tempted to put my money into the computer instead of what I've been wanting, Wilson Di9's. I need help on what you would do, and try to be unbiased, as I know this is a golf forum and it's a stupid decision to ask, but I'm just wondering.

On another note, would it just be a smart idea to get this computer running fast as possible, and then sell it for a profit?

My son is facing the same issue. New laptop or get rid of the womens clubs and get a better set. I told him to get clubs.

Id go with the clubs, but if you really enjoy rebuilding computers you might be happier going the computer route.

I am an avid golfer and I own a computer repair / service business.

I would really need to know what the 'specs' are on the computer before I could give you good advice. Computers lose their value almost or faster than golf clubs. Also, what do you really know about building computers? Can you accurately figure out what are the 'bad components' or the 'problem' with the computer that is being given to you? There is usually a reason someone 'gave' their old computer away. If it's 4-5 years old, running Windows XP w/ only 512MB RAM, onboard graphics, P4 processor, then even after 'fixing it' it's only worth about $175 on the street. Why is it not worth much... because you can buy an entry-level 'brand new' computer with a larger hard drive, more RAM, better processor and Windows7 for $499 online or at your nearest 'big-box' or even better...you local computer store. Me...I'd go for the new irons

Well right now I know the problem is a faulty hard drive. Most of my spare hard drives are just mackered. (I've been watching wayyy too much BBC.) And I put mostly recent parts into this one. The only problem is the CPU, a Celeron D 2.6 Ghz. I'd like to overclock it to 3.4 GHz or so with the new cooler I installed. I haven't spent any money yet on it, but that's mainly what I'm focusing on with it. The specs would probably be above-averagely fast.

Is there even much of a market for an old, rebuilt desktop computer when you can buy one brand new for very cheap nowadays?

The Celeron D 2.6 Ghz Processor is a single core and was released back in 2003/2004, so by todays standards even if you get it run reliably at 3.4GHz (not likely) you're looking at a pretty slow processor. Also will probably require an IDE hard drive (slow) and limited to the amount of memory you can expand to (4GB). At best running Vista or Windows 7 it's a below average system. Buy the golf clubs.

As someone who will very likely have a Ph.D. in computer science finished at this time next year, I have to ask: what's your current computer?

I had planned on two major purchases in 2010: new irons and a new TV. The TV cost me about $150 less than I had stashed away for it, and the irons are going to cost me about $200 less than I had allocated. I took the difference, plus a little more money I had earned on the side, and bought a new desktop computer for my office for it (note: I'm a graduate student, and I provide my own computer for my school office, unless I want to use department ones). My previous, which I had purchased in Fall 2003, and upgraded RAM once, was slow as all get out. 768 MB Ram, maybe 40 gig hard drive, 1.? GhZ processor. This new one is 6 GB Ram, 1 TB HD, and almost 3 GhZ processor. It runs smooth and quiet.

As anyone who knows what the difference in the specs I just listed can verify, I needed the new computer.

How long is that computer gonna be good for compared to a set of clubs is the question. I have worked on computers for a living for the past 10 years and I can tell you that the clubs are gonna last far longer. You will probably build 4 or 5 pc's for the life of a set of clubs.

      Couple things to update First on the clubs/ball. I switched golf balls to the Left Dash ProV1x. It seems like a great fit for me. I always need lower spin off the tee, it's about a half club longer into greens, and still gives me enough spin with chips and pitches to hit whatever shot I need. The durability is insane too, played 35 holes with one over my last two rounds and it still looked brand new until I lost it. Hybrid is no longer. Couldn’t quite get a consistent strike and the random snap hook left was always lurking as soon as the strike drifted out towards the toe. I know it was me not the club but I couldn’t stand the lefts anymore. Titliest fitting guy came to our club a few days ago and I had been curious about the T200 3iron. I hit a few with it and the stock HZRDUS graphite shaft, it wasn’t bad at all but I could definitely tell when I mishit it. Then the fitter had me try the U505 3iron. When he asked if I was open to trying it I said something like “Isn’t that the game improvement one?” and he said “Just trust me and hit a few with it”. Within 5 swings I was sold. Suddenly it didn’t look as big and chunky when I started hitting rocket after rocket. It did every single thing I want a 3 iron to do. It flies very high, forgiving, can hit it off the tee and ground, can flight it low when needed, and best of all, it doesn’t go left. He had me try to snap hook one left and it resulted in a nice tight draw, nowhere close to a hook. Tried it with the stock shaft and their upgraded one, ended up hitting it the best with the Graphite Design Tour AD IZ-95. Ended up getting a great deal on a used one that arrived yesterday so going to go measure my numbers with it today at the range. I expect to be using this a lot for 2nd shots into par 5s, being that 230-250 club. Hit some on the Mevo+ yesterday and the distance is exactly what I needed.     From a playing perspective, been playing pretty solid so far this season, driving and putting have been solid overall, approach shots have been good for the most part and short game wasn't great to start the year but it's been getting better lately with some more dedicated practice. Compared to scratch over 7 rounds:

      so with the driver. Feel more arm  width at A4. keep an in the eye on the ball. The first move from the top is lowering the hands down. Don’t mix that up with looking up at the target as the club comes down from A4 with the body. Feel like I get width with the arms from the chest in the Downswing.

      Went back and reviewed my rounds this year at my home course to fill out the spreadsheet. Realized I have made at least par on each hole but two that I have bogied. At my skill level, it gives me a new confidence that I can play each hole decently well and strong together a lower score. Great mental boost.

      I'm at 330 I think. I have a spreadsheet with all of them in it. It helps having lived in two countries. 159 in the US and 136 in the UK. Then a handful in Europe and a few in other countries (Canada, Australia, Mexico).
