When I was working on the railroad I use to play two to three times a week and I also paid for my son to play. I was spending around $200.00 a month on green fees, balls etc. That was back in the 70s and 80s. I get to play free now-a-days due to working in the Pro Shop here and that makes it really nice.

Golf is not a game, it's a way of life!

I figure $250 to $300. Dues run $190 including unlimited range balls and it allows me to play without extra charge at about 10 courses in the area. I still play some other courses once in a while where I still have to pay greens fees.

Don't spend much on balls anymore. I find more than I lose and my vendors give me boxes of balls occassionally. I have finally stopped buying every new club or gadget that comes down the pike.

I would say around 400 a month. I figure I spend about 80 dollars a week playing. There are 5 local courses in my area that all cost 24.00 to walk the course and I play about 3 times a week. I hit balls at least once or twice a week and I have to buy golf balls and golf gloves once in a while. I try to work alot of overtime at work to offset the cost. Expensive habit but I have a feeling im on the low end saying 400 a month. Im sure there are guys who spend alot more then that buying equipment all the time and what not.

My average is $350-500 per month for recreation golf. If I am playing 2 tournaments a month, then it would be closer to $1200-1500 plus travel expenses. Just don't ask how much for new equipment or shafts and grips, I don't feel like crying.

I haven't started yet, but I believe there is a course close to me that costs around $7 to play 9 holes. I'm just starting out, so that will probably be good enough for now.

Is my set good?

$28 for sure and usually about another $60 on 2-3 rounds per month.

Another thread made me wonder about how much we spend on this game.

Hundreds if not thousands of dollars on range fees, equipment, driving range, apparel.

How much do you spend / month on fees?
How much do you spend / year on equipment?
How much do you spend / month on food/beer at the course?
How much do you spend / year on miscellaneous?

I will respond to this thread after I break out the calculator...

My monthly bill at the course is about $1000/month - that includes membership, driving range, cart fees and food/alcohol. On top of that it is another $20-$30 per round for cart girl (2-4 times a week).

Equipment expenditures are about $250 so far for this year with another $700 to be spent shortly.

Then the BS little things like $10 for soft spikes about every 6 weeks, a new glove for about $10-$15 once a month and a box of prov1s every 2-3 weeks.

Annual total estimate would be $17k-$18k/year.

Lets see...

Equipment so far- $740 on new clubs, probably about $300 on balls.

Don't ride a cart much and get free range balls so don't really have a fee for the club, and my parents pay membership....

Food- Avg. 3 dollars per day, which would be about $1,200 a year i guess??

Apparel... wow. A LOT. i have spent $280 on shoes, and probably over $400 dollars on shirts.

A big expense for me is gloves. I go through one like every week

I learned quickly that I couldn't afford this game. So I got a job at a golf course. In free golf, carts, range balls I save at least $4000-$5000 and I've still spent probably $500. I've spent maybe $500 on equipment but I get huge discounts. I eat breakfast at the golf course almost 7 days a week at half off so $600 there. I don't drink beer on the course. In misc I spend like $500 a year on tournament entry fees plus gas to get there plus the overnight stays. Jeez!

Wow what a rambling post but when all is said and done it would cost me maybe $10,000 a year to feed this habit. Thank goodness for my job's benefits because I am out of pocket maybe 35% of that.

    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
    • Day 580 - 2026-05-04 Played eight holes. Sometimes golf kicks you in the nuts. 😉
    • I work with a lot of golfers who want more shaft lean at impact, who currently have AoAs that range from +2° to -2°, and who love to see the handle lower and more "in front of their trail thigh" from face-on at P6. And a lot of these golfers try to solve the issue by working on the downswing. They do something to drag the handle forward. Or they just leave their right thigh farther back so the same handle location "looks" farther forward. Or they move the ball back in their stance. Or they push themselves down into the ground to get the handle lower and increase (decrease?) their AoA (to be more negative). The real fix is often to get wider in the backswing. To do LESS in the backswing. To hinge less, fold the trail arm less, abduct the trail arm less. I had a case of this over the weekend. Before, the player had 110° of trail elbow bend, "lifted" his trail humerus only a few degrees, etc. The club traveled quite a bit around him, and he tended to "pick" the ball from the fairways. In the "after" swings below (which are mild exaggerations — this golfer does not need to end up at < 70° of elbow bend. These were slower backswings with "hit it as hard as you normally would" intent downswings), you can see that he bent his elbow about 70° instead of 110° and lifted his right arm an extra ~15° or more. You can't see how much less this moved his hands across his chest (right arm abduction), but it was also decreased. His hands stayed more "in front of" his right shoulder rather than traveling "beside" them so much. The two swings look like this: The change at P6, without talking about the downswing one little bit (outside of him telling me that he tends to pick the ball), is remarkable: Without 110° of elbow bend to get out (which he gets to 80°, a loss of 30°), the golfer actually loses slightly less elbow bend (70 - 50 = 20), but delivers 30° less elbow bend, lowering the handle and letting the elbow get "in front of" the rib cage… because it never got "behind" or "beside" the rib cage. If you look at this video showing the before/afters of P6, you'll note the handle location (both vertically and horizontally) and the shoulders (the ball is in the same place in these frames). This golfer's path was largely unaffected (still pretty straight into the ball, < 3° path and often < 1.5°), but his AoA jumped to -5° ± 2°. I've always said, and in talking with other instructors they agree and feel similarly, that we spend a lot of time working on the backswing. This is another example of why.
