My ball striking is so bad lately that I actually played an entire round without hitting a green in regulation. I barely hit any fairways either. Thanks to my short game, I mustered an 82 but it was the ugliest 82 ever.

My equipment:

Driver - Callaway FT3 Fusion (9 degree)
3 Wood - Orlimar Tri-Metal (9 degree)
Hybrids - Bobby Jones (17, 21 & 25 degree)

Irons - KZG XCB 5 - PW

Wedges - Warrior (52 & 56 degree)

Putter - STX Envision

Ball of choice - Callaway TOUR i(s)

Beats the ugly 107 I shot yesterday.

I'd love to have the talent to shoot 82 without hitting a green. Heck, I'd love to break 90 again period.

I try not to track too many stats. Only one matters and that was the 82. Look at it this way: what good things did you do to shoot ok without seeing the fairway? Something must have been going right.

Wow. Your short game was as good as your long game was bad. Impressive yet sad at the same time.

Yeah, that's my game in a nutshell. On Golf Digest's website you can track your stats and they give you a separate handicap for you short and long game. My long game is a 14 and my short game is a 1.

Driver - Callaway FT3 Fusion (9 degree)
3 Wood - Orlimar Tri-Metal (9 degree)

Sounds like how I was playing for years. Didn't hit many greens, but mostly not too far off so the up and downs were not too difficult, well half of the time.

I don't know about you, but it made me start just aiming for the center of the green and not the flag stick.

Heh, I'm the polar opposite. Long game 6, short game 16.

Yes. That's pretty much it exactly. I was 11 for 11 on up and downs for this round. I hit my irons fairly consistently on the yardages but I just miss left and right all day long. I also suffered two penalty strokes off the tee with my driver. I ended up playing my 3h off of most of the tees.

I've been scratching out mid/high-80's scores with the same predicament(s). Played the best round of my life 3 weeks ago followed by 7 ugly rounds. We'll see what happens this afternoon.

Even par through 9 is my best.  I don't even want to think about what was my worst.

sounds close to my round yesterday...granted I hit 7 greens...but without my short game it would have been horrendous.

Have you had your clubs fitted by a professional club fitter? I did recently and it's made a big difference.

No. I have off-the-rack Top Flite irons from 1998. I actually started a thread a few weeks ago asking if fitting would help me with my accuracy and ball striking.

I know a guy that seems like he never hits a fairway or green, but still manages to carry a five handicap. He is a scramble machine.

    • Sad tale.  Both the A's and Raiders.  IMO, cities shouldn't be building stadiums for MLB/NFL teams.  But that's the world we live in.   DAY 3:  30-min range session with irons and wedges.  Working on follow thru -- no hooks! 🙂
    • Backswing: Body is responsible for taking the club around. Arms are responsible for making the club go up.  Downswing: The process is reversed. Weight Forward So, your arms need to do stuff. Set up to the ball. Do not raise your arms at all. Rotate your body as you would in the swing. You will notice your hands stay down near your right hip. So, how does the club get up? Your arms raise it up. You can't take your arms out of the swing. What you are describing might be more of a feel, but it also might not be correct.
    • It depends on what you mean by "while the core remains still" I wouldn't consider his core "remaining still" here, DJ's abs, belly button, and belt buckle have rotated almost 90 degrees by the top of the backswing. Those components of his core then have to rotate/uncoil on the downswing. Far from remaining still IMO.
    • It’s going to change but your basic setup feel should be about the same. Your body kind of adjusts to length and lie angle of the club. You’ll want to pay attention more to ball position as you change clubs more than how bent over you are. I understood what you meant from what your wrote.
    • Oh I probably was thinking the wrong thing or the wrong way when I typed the golf swing was more of a body swing (in my mind).  The in my mind part probably should have said in my opinion or based on what I have read.  Just meant the body needs to be involved more than the hands and swinging the arms while the core remains still.
