I was looking at new drivers and keep seeing drivers also having a "draw" model. Can someone explain what this means and what is the benefit of having a "draw" driver? Thanks.

Irons: :nike:Covert 4I - PW

Its a driver with an offset to "draw the ball" ... Its basically a bad idea and a quick fix for certain things..

its set up for people that slice the ball and dont want to fix their swing... the face sets up closed. a straight ball hitter would constantly draw the ball using a draw driver.

They usually have a closed face, a high torque shaft, and weighting set up to alter the COG not only low and back, but also closer to the heel so that all shot are effectively toe shots, which (all things equal) have draw spin.

My buddy got such a thing because he sliced everything back then - a year later he hooks the crap out of it... I have yet to meet somebody who tells me that a draw-driver actually helped him with his slice.

Well now you have. My Ping fairway woods have a draw bias and I usually hit them dead straight. It's weird how I naturally draw my irons, hit my FW's straight and SLICE my driver something awful.

You are not actually talking about Ping Eye 2 persimmon fairway woods, are you? Dont get me wrong - i play Persimmon woods from time to time, but i doubt they invented draw & fade bias back then as a way to improve players games. And even if, these suckers are so unforgiving they make every mishit curve without hesitation - much more than any other modern club ever would.

My Eye 2's are laminated woods. Not sure why you think they are unforgiving. I have driver, 3 & 5 metal woods by Taylor Made and Callaway but I still prefer the old Pings. I simply hit them better, not as far but straighter. Plus I also like the look, sound and feel compared to the others. What works for me may not for you. I just wish that I could hit them further.

Yeah, one of the biggest mistakes I've made concerning my golf equipment was getting a draw driver.

I now struggle to get the club face open since it starts off so offset closed that I either hit it straight (good swing) or the closed face results in a horribly pulled shot that I typically don't know where it will go. I draw my non-offset irons wonderfully, but my driver I can't draw for the life of me. Consistant shot cone, not the cone I want though typically.

1. Closed face

2. Heel weighted

3. Offset has nothing to do with it. You can slice just as easily with offset clubs.

4. Shaft torque has nothing to do with it. Torque affects a slice as bad as it does a hook. (timing)

5. Too upright a club can promote hooking.

6. Too "thin" grips can promote hooking as well.

My Eye 2's are laminated woods.

The all were. PING never made a "persimmon" wood. My all time least favourite wooden woods, but to each their own.

When I got fitted for my driver at the golfers warehouse they sold me a closed face 2* offset driver. It did nothing for my slice then and it does nothing to help the wicked pull I have now. I have to hold the face extremely open to hit a nice straight shot now and I am going to look into a new one over the winter break. I wish I never bought it. I decided to fix the swing flaws that were causing the slice.

I'll disagree with the comments here a tad.  My Taylormade R11 hits the fairway about 50-60% of the time while I can hit the fairway about 70-75% with my Ping G10 Draw.  And no, my missed shots on the Taylormade are not all to the right.  In fact, they are pretty evenly distributed.  I use a mid-size grip to ensure no hooks happen and then swing normal.  I can draw it and I can also fade the Ping driver which has never been an issue.  While I did lose 10-15 yards in length, the increased consistency is more important.  After years of playing, I can shoot in the 70's when I hit more than 60% of the fairways.

Hi, welcome to the forum.  "Draw" drivers just help you start the ball more to the left, helps the face and path match up for golfers who have a leftward swing direction.  Golfers will curve it less or hit slight pulls.  Ball starts where the face is pointed at impact and curves away from the path.  So a real draw driver would have a face aimed to the right

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
