Everyone should be hitting down on every shot. Even fairway woods and hybrids you hit down a little.

Some hit up with the driver. Other then that, they hit down most of the time. Probably hit it at the lowpoint sometimes with woods or when hitting a flop shot, but on most shots they hit down, yes. On average at the PGA Tour, they hit down with every single club. From -5.1º with the PW to -1.3º with the driver.

Because you're coming over the top. It's much easier to hit down on the ball with an out-to-in swing.

My guess would be going over the top.

As to practicing hitting down on the ball, next time at the range recycle those broken tees by putting them about 4 inches in front of your ball. If the tee goes bye bye you probably hit down on the shot.

Had a lesson not too long ago on hitting down on the ball. Instructor told me to forward shaft lean at address and aim at the front of the ball of even a spot in front of the ball. Those two tips worked for me.

For me it was practicing just taking divots and trying to hit the same spot on the ground everytime. Find a piece of grass you can do this on. I did it off the edge of an old softball field. Make a line on the ground where the ball would be. You're divot should start in front of this line (on left side) and bottom out a few inches in front. If you focus a few inches in front of the line, the divot will be in the right place.

I went to the range a bunch of times and would place a broken tee a few inches in front of my ball, my goal was to hit the ball and then to also hit the broken tee after. It really helped me to hit down on the ball, give it a shot.

You've got it. You don't even need a ball to practie this. I sort of recall iacas saying the same thing - get outside, put a mark where your ball would be, and practice hitting the ground in front of that mark. Over and ovar (and over) again, until it's ingrained.

Of course, I've never had the gumption to try this, btu it seems like the right way.

This exactly what worked for me. There is a video about it somewhere out there on the interweb thingy. If you do this right the tee will go bye-bye to.

Whenever I'm able to hit down on the ball and hit the ball first, it is a world of difference. The distance is consistent and accuracy way better. I'd say hitting the ball first and on the way down is the best way to elevate your game if you struggle with such problems.

Okay, here's one guess. If your hands are more forward at impact than they were at address, that may result in your clubface being open at impact.

The old standby, "hit down on the ball" is simply not correct. The club should be moving downward, but to actually try to "hit down" on the ball causes a lot of problems. The shaft must trail the hands well through impact, which will force the ball to be struck on a downward angle.

And as we've seen said already, trying to hit down on the ball causes you to come over the top and slice it, as well as causing a steep plane and other problems. Get your weight forward, and the shaft to lean forward, and you will automatically hit down on the ball. To do this, just slide the hips forward, and hold the hinge as long as you can, and then some. I'd rather someone not release it at all, ever, than flip. I've never seen anyone hold the shaft angle too long, it may be possible, but I've never seen it.

Don't worry about the face being open at impact, that's not generally an issue. I can also guarantee that your hands are not more ahead of the ball at impact causing an open face, because if you are asking about hitting down on the ball, you would not ever, ever, ever have this problem.
