Here's a video of my driver swing from yesterday.

These were my better swings. Constructive criticism appreciated.

Can't see much detail at full speed, but the major positions look good and you seem to be nicely on plane. How do you usually hit the ball?

Edit: Slowed one down for you.

I tend to miss on both sides. If I miss left, it's a pull. If I miss right, it's a straight fade or slice. I've struggled with finding a consistent address position, both how close to the ball and left-right position placement. More recently I've started bringing the club away more to the outside (a la Fowler) and trying to come more in-to-out. But I think I still pull across my body. My iron divots are still a few degrees out-to-in.

Those 3 drives in the video had impact tape on them and all 3 were in the center of the club face, So those were good ones. I'm fairly consistent on where I hit on the face (based on impact tape analysis).

Looks like you got some clubhead throwaway going on, which is often related to a two-way miss. Do you have a FO swing? Perhaps some iron swings too.

No face on. But here's a video of an 8-iron (full-speed and 25%)

I agree about the throwaway. Can you pin point where in the swing the cause of the throwaway is?

you look like you're casting the clubhead down from the top instead of your hands pulling the club through the hitting area. work with an impact bag and a few other training aids to help you hold your lag better like a swing fan or chute.

Very much so. The whole swing looks very hard, like you're really trying to slam the ball. As a result, your losing your balance, and lifting up a lot. The casting is the most important thing, as about 99% of all amatuer players flip too much, we should all work on it more than we do. Plane is good, so fixing the flip will give best results.

I can't see the casting from this view (but I'll take everyone's word on it) but the fact that you stepped through the shot seemed to indicate that your upper body has moved forward quite a bit.

it also looked on your second driver swing that you let your left side collapse on your backswing, you might try keeping the position of your left leg a bit stronger so that your lower body can coil against your upper body better creating a more spring like body effect. I also agree about the lack of lag; you might try letting your entire club drop straight down (remaining parallel at the top) to initiate your downswing as this should help your lag issue as well as promote a more inside-out swing path

I used iMovie on the Mac. My camera (canon 7d) records video in QuickTime (.mov) so the two go together nicely.

hi there. my parents grew up in champaign, Il. anyway, your swing looks ok, like a 15 hndcp swing though. you look pretty stiff. you need to get into more of an athletic position at setup in stance. think about what a short stop looks like when the batter swings. he's "ready" and so should you be. your left leg drifts or drags on back swing instead of pivoting down and back. this limits you to getting into your right hip as result you don't have much power coming down.

when you swing back, your goal is to pivot your left knee down and back, keeping your right knee flexed and to turn your left shoulder so it finishes over your right knee. get your swing weighted into the ball of your right hip, which if you do, you'll be fully turned and loaded. note: if you're not "turning" but performing a swing maneuver, you won't be able to get into your right hip.

2 weeks later. Here is an 8 iron face on. In these two weeks I've really worked on the flying wedge and trying not to flip. I guess I can't tell from the video if I still am. It doesn't feel like I am, but we know how real that can be. Today was the best ball striking day at the range I've ever had. But the season's over, so the grass in front of me has been closed and we're relegated to the mats until next year.

2 swings at full speed and 25% speed.

Added bonus: in the right edge of the frame you can see the Univ. of Illinois Women's Golf Team practicing.

Yeah, you're still flipping. It takes a long time to get it right, so don't expect it to happen overnight. What feels like a huge gain will, in reality, be a little chipping away. You need to just keep working on it.

good swing buddy for 15 hcap. have you being playing golf long? on your first drives x 3, your balance could do with a little bit of work .
a) imagine your sitting on the edge of a bar stool and try hitting drives again. Think about what position you want to finish in and finish there.
b) your short irons show your body swaying back with the club going back, work on pivoting (rotating) back, not swaying back.

with a swing like that and 15 HCP, maybe you need to consider your course managment skills??? i.e. plot your round around, not so much attack...stay outta trouble...??? just a thought....

always give way to the Greenskeeper!!

in my bag:
whatever clubs i find left behind on the course... But the Ping Anser will never be beaten!!

BALL: only get off tractor for PRO v1's..... Now, which way to Q School???

Shanks,

Is there something I can look for in the video (this one or future ones) to determine if I'm still flipping? I can see obvious flipping when I see it demonstrated slowly (typically very far behind the ball with the head going way past the hands), but I feel like mine is more subtle in this past video and so it's not as obvious to me. I know the hands should be in front of the clubhead at impact, ya? And/Or the angle between the right forearm and the club at impact should be < 180* ?

Doesn't the clubhead at some point in the follow through have to go past the hands? Is it still flipping if it does that? Don't get me wrong, I agree that I still am. I'm just trying to figure out how to analyze my video a little better.

You really don't flip all that much in the newest video. I don't really know where some people got the thought that you flip like crazy, especially since there is no old face-on video to compare it too. You still flip some, but more like a single-digit capper than a 15.

I have to agree with SMcG about the swaying on the backswing. You don't really want your hips to move backwards.

    • Two bits. Bit 1 The NCAA's appeal of Brendan Sorsby being granted a temporary injunction will not be heard until February, so there will be nothing to prevent Sorsby from playing the full season and potential CFP.  Bit 2 The Big Ten Conference will hold a meeting and is expected to ban all of its athletic programs from playing Texas Tech in the regular season. Georgia has done the same. The SEC will meet to consider a similar ban. Fellow Big 12 members TCU and Kansas State are spearheading a similar ban, but the conference charter might not allow it. Meanwhile, Big 12 athletic directors are meeting this week to explore what options the conference might have.
    • No, but I'm also in disagreement that golfers have no thoughts over the golf ball, and/or don't ever think I've met someone I truly believe is thinking nothing but "target" or something on most shots.
    • StuM,  I have, in the past, added a left handed club. (Ususally a 7 iron) However, I usually take a stroke penalty and move the ball to where I want it.  I play for fun and in a pinch can use theback side if my club if I don't want the penalty stroke.    RetiredOldMan,  Terry
    • So, Brendan Sorsby, Texas Tech transfer QB, was found guilty of sports betting by the NCAA. He admitted to it. He placed thousands of bets over multiple years while at Indiana and Cincinnati. This included betting on his own teams.  The NCAA rules ban athletes from betting on any sport (college or pro).  A retired visiting judge from Tarrant County, Texas has put an injunction on the NCAA ruling. He is a visiting judge because the first judge was a graduate and big fan of Texas Tech, and he recused himself. The judged ruled the following... "Under Curry's order, Sorsby is permitted to play for Texas Tech's 2026 season on the condition that he continues his treatment for a gambling and anxiety disorder and serves a two-game suspension (missing games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State)."  Don't get me wrong, I don't particularly care for the NCAA. That still doesn't mean that a college can choose when or where to say, "Yea we agree to these rules for all our sports, well except in this case." Here is a breakdown from S&W. The Hidden Weapon in Sorsby’s Injunction: How a Lubbock County Court Order Quietly Neutralized the NCAA’s Most Powerful Enforcement Tool - Law Offices of Snell & Wilmer By Ryan J. Regula On June 8, 2026, Lubbock County District Court Judge Ken Curry issued a temporary injunction in Brendan Sorsby v. National Collegiate Athletic Association, Cause No. DC-2026-CV-0791 (99th Judicial District... The main judgement made sense. Sorsby, I am going to have all this harm done to me if I don't get to play. The Judge, I agree. The penalty for gambling is too harsh, so here are all these things you must do, and I will grant this injunction against the NCAA. Basically, an analogy would be when a person goes into court for a DUI and they agree to all these other things to not end up in jail.  What sucks for the NCAA is the NCAA has appealed to Texas’ Seventh Court of Appeals, based in Amarillo. All four justices that preside over the court are graduates of Texas Tech University School of Law. It would be hilarious if all four of them had to recuse themselves 🤣. For those who like to read legal rulings...
    • The chatter in my brain is when the distance is between clubs since I am pretty weak at shortened backswings, etc. I try to simply decide if being long or short is the better outcome and choose my club based on that and simply not even try for the “real” distance.  For me a full normal swing is what I strive for.
