Some people don't understand there are two types of rounds. 1.) Rounds which at the outset are deemed competitive - whether against oneself to be turned in for their index or in an official tournament or match, and 2.) Rounds which are either just for practice or fun or are as part of a group of absolute beginners where the goal is just to get done as fast as possible before tempers flare - these rounds are not entered for handicap purposes.

Don't forget that when posting scores for handicapping purposes, a score also has to be declared as non-tournament or tournament. The tournament declaration may kick in a different procedure for evaluating subsequent HCIs. So there is, in my view, 3.

Hmm...I need to amend my answer a little. If I start a round and it looks like it is going to be TERRIBLY slow and I have a chance to hit multiple balls, I will turn it into a practice round and do just that and stop keeping score. I'll take multiple drives (driver vs. hybrid), try different irons off the tee and on approaches, work on my sand shots, etc. That is, of course, so long as there's nobody behind me waiting. In a practice round, there are no rules, so I don't worry about it.

I play by the rules every time I play, even in a practice round. For me, that is the only way to play.
