Background info:
I'm 17, usually shoot in the high 80's low 90's. I have a slightly slower swing speed.
I'm using a 10.5 regular flex TM 09 burner driver and a top-flight xl-7000 irons and woods.

Problem:
I hit my driver super low ( no higher than 15 feet feet from the ground) with a lot of forward spin. Usually goes about 100 yards. Maybe 1 out of every 6 drives i hit correct.

It happens every now and then with my 3 wood. Maybe 1 out of every 4 dribbles across the grass 80 yards with a lot of forward spin.

I'll post a video of my swing asap.

more than likely, you're hitting the ball thin with the leading edge of the driver, causing the ball to swing forward instead of backspin. Could be a number of things but my guess is that you're trying too hard to swing up at the ball, causing your driver to hti the ball on the way up, hitting the ball with the leading edge.

what is your driver stance like? Where is the ball located in relation to your left and right foot?

Hey Jason, could be several things - would have to see your golf swing on video. Try this on the practice tee. Tee the ball higher - at least half the ball above the top line of the club. You need to strike the ball more up the face to get trajectory. Play the ball one inch inside your forward heel. Lay clubs on the ground so you know exactly where the ball position is. Your lead arm may be bending through impact causing you to hit very low on the bottom of your club face. Get that video done and I can help you more.

Problem:

Have you tried using a tee when hitting your driver?

Definitely recommend a lesson mate, a teaching pro could probably sort that out in no time for the sake of £20 for a 30 minute lesson (or whatever it costs in the states? $30 or so?).

For you to do that, you must be doing something quite fundamentally incorrect so I'd definitely recommend a lesson and then lots of time at the range practising what you learn!

I would agree with the previous poster and say you're probably hitting the ball low on the club face, basically negating the loft of the club and putting top spin on the ball. Maybe try teeing the ball higher as nycgolfpro suggested and try moving the ball back in your stance slightly.

Good luck!

Stay in your stance - Maintain your spine angle thoughout the swing. Sounds like you are standing up to get a big backswing and then your topping the ball because you have changed your spine angle or stood up.

Like Jaywun said Stay down.

SHorten up your backswing and try hitting the ball at half speed to get comfortable and then increase the swing as you hit the ball more square.

Goodluck

Could possibly any of the above as well as:
Your shaft is a little to flexy for your swing, thus that at impact, your shaft is still bent and not uncoiled completely. De-lofting the club and taking away some of your power, also.

Sorry for raising the topic, but thought i would share what was going on with my swing for future golfers with this problem.
1st. my right elbow was bent through impact.
2nd. My swing plane was super low. I was swinging more around my body... Kind of makes sense, low swing plane = low trajectory.

I hit my driver pretty low for the most part, but its usually a good thing. I think its the shaft that promotes a lower, but piercing ball flight. I get in trouble when i balloon the ball in the air, tend to slice it a bit more, put more sidespin on it. The lower ball flight usually results in straighter tee shots that get a lot of roll when they land. Yes, i will occasionally hit one straight into the ground, but very rarely now. Try experimenting with ball placement in your stance. I find just inside my lead foot seems to fit me best but some prefer it further back. I've been consciously trying to bend my knees a bit more lately and that has seemed to help me as well. Now I realize that im not a great player(20+ hcp) but my mid and short irons are the main culprit right now, though i have been improving lately on that, hitting more greens which is helped by hitting better tee shots and having shorter approach shots.

your just making that up.

It'd add loft because it wouldn't have kicked back in time, they say a flexy shaft will launch higher than a stiffer one. De-lofting should add power, too much will take it away but if you take a sand wedge and take two shots, one with an open face and one with a closed face. Which one will go farther?

your just making that up.

Half of the advice in this thread is terrible. Could be a lot of things. Without a swing video no one can diagnose what is wrong with his swing. My advice would be to see a PGA pro.

    • Day 23: weird day, and only had a little bit of time. Just did mirror work again, working on where the elbow is in the downswing
    • I flipped over to this tonight and thoroughly enjoyed it. Anyone else watch? I picked it up during the golf relay event, but seeing these pros out having fun in alternative events was refreshing and entertaining. I’m sure it will be on in reruns in the next week or so, so I won’t spoil the outcome. Im curious what others thought of it. I’m recording it’s later airing to see the beginning.
    • Day 443 - 2025-12-17 Made a few swings in testing some things out at another academy. Might pop up on someone else's podcast in a few weeks.
    • Day 37 (17 Dec 25) - nine hole round with my good friend.  We got paired up with a couple of the men’s group regulars as part of their shootout.  Started off with a wonderful quad bogie and then a dbl on three to be six over thru three holes.  Game went 180° over the next five as I shot one under (including a chip in birdie on hole six and four up and down 1 putt pars) for a net finish of five over. What could have been a really tough nine became a solid finish due to staying in the moment and not checking out.  Great day in course management and keeping perspective .
    • Day 127 12-17 Backswing and flow practice. Took advantage of the 60 degeee weather(it was 20 degrees Sunday)
