Once it gets cold outside, I settle into winter mode. For one thing, I want to go to the gym more and work on strength and power.

Will probably go hit a small bucket on days when it really warms up.

ALSO... I go after some of those time-burning housekeeping items - at home and work - which might get in the way of a quick golf start when things warm up.

Focus, connect and follow through!

Last weekend my wife was out of town with kids. The whole day was mine. I was in the parking lot of my favourite course and couldn't stop thinking about all the things that needed to be done around the house. I put the bag back in car and headed home for a nice relaxing breakfast and a day of chores. I knew it was time to shut 'er down.

I'll miss the golf, but what I don't miss is the logistics of traveling to play and practice. In a big city, this wears you down, the commuting and the winter break is relaxing because you're not on the go as much. I also won't miss the crazy hours I have to wake up, 4, 5, 6 in the morning.

I understand you perfectly and I didn't even think about that. It's really challenging squeezing golf into family logistics so it's nice to have a bit of a reprieve from that.

I agree. I think throughout the year I identify lost of things i could be better at. During summer monhts, Instead of spending some quality time on the range fixing some of my issues I just go out and play again and again and again. Fixing things on the run which never really helps me at least. I look at winter as Training camp. where I can really become a better ball striker and work on techniques that can be harder to do on the course. also this is the time of year i go to get some lessons then take the lesson to the range so that I can develop a feel and relearn some muscle memory.

You make a really good point. I may re-consider a winter membership to the Turning Stone Casino golf dome. I can at least work on my tee shots at which I am absolutely horrible. They have a nice chipping and putting area too. unfortunately, I don't like hitting off matts because they make me look better than I really am, so I can't tell if I'm improving.

I look forward to a pleasant reprieve from the heat of the summer, and more favorable golfing weather over the winter months. Maybe I'll break 80 by Spring.

Yeah I guess somewhat. I seem to play my best early in the year for whatever reason. This year I've actually started playing pretty ok recently but still like the time away. I get brownie points with the wife and get to focus more on other things. I also like late season golf since it is so wide open and fast play.

I am always way better in the spring for some reason. But basically everyyear I improve a ton over the winter, I guess those 4months of not playing re-energize me and I really improve early in the year. Then once mid-summer hits I start competing with everyone and start to do worse.

I used to take a break from golf every winter, not due to winter but due to basketball season. Many times I would come back in March or April and play decently. This fall I have not been playing much and have just started getting back to the range and playing nine holes here or there. Yesterday, I played a course I had never seen before and played very well. Bottom line: I am going to do everything possible to avoid a winter break. My first winter in NC I played every week except one so barring a repeat of last winter (exceptionally cold and nasty) I plan on being out there. Winter? What winter?

    • Rule 1.2b refers you to a section in the Committee Procedures (Section 5I) that helps explain what a Code of Conduct may (and may not) do.  Defining acceptable behavior (including smoking) and applying Stroke of DQ penalties are certainly within the Committee's authority. That Code of Conduct certainly should be available, either in written form or in a webpage accessible to all.  It may not show up on the "standard local rules" for an organization, the "hard card", as it sounds like its a policy of this particular golf course. Assuming that's the case it should show up on the Notice to Players for this particular event.  If you can't find it, ask someone, send an email, try to find out.   In summary, yes the Committee can DQ (or withdraw) a Player for smoking, even before or between rounds.  But its up to you to go from there, communication is the key here.

    • Hmm... I not sure I completely understand. If the course has a no smoking policy, then he shouldn't smoke at the course.  I'm assuming since you are aware of the policy, it must be written down somewhere.  As far as getting disqualified from the tournament, I would think that would be up to the committee. But it feels like it is within their power to disqualify, so why take the chance?
